1/4-24 Starter Ring Gear Bolts or Alternatives ???

Post by henryford2 » Thu Mar 24, 2022 7:44 am

I'm installing a "new" starter ring gear that is tapped to 1/4-24. I am not running magnets and may not have room for slingers (Model B crank, stock length with VW oil pump driven from rear of camshaft). From what I've seen vendors often provide a complete set of the correct size bolts with their slingers. Are these bolts available elsewhere, or is there an alternative? I've read that a 6mm bolt with 1mm pitch can be used, as well as rethreading the 1/4-24 thread in the gear to a more common 1/4-28 thread size (can't be good?). Looking for suggestions. Thanks

Not sure the 6mm bolts will work with the oversize 1/4-24 threads. Re threading the holes to 1/4-28 may be the way to go. I will try this when my stock of correct ring gears is exhausted. My concern is that the tooth hardness includes the threaded holes. A broken tap would ruin your day. My thoughts.

From what I have read, I'm guessing the 6mm is only good for the #14-24 thread size, not the 1/4-24. 6mm has a major diameter of .2362, the #14 a .24 and the 1/4-28 at .250. Thanks

Joe- not sure what style slingers you are using but, these will certainly clear the pump. Also, retapping to 1/4-28 will work.

Yes, your style slingers will clear the pump, hoping the triple gear retaining plate does, what size mounting bolts are you using for the slingers? I've retapped an original #14-24 threaded gear for 1/4"-28 but not a new 1/4"-24 one. Thanks, Joe
