I am working on a 1914 Roadster and ready to install the rear fender brackets. The question I have is which way does the carriage bold get installed? Does the round head of the carriage bold show on the outside or does the square nuts show on the outside? I have not been able to find any photos of this area in any of the books I have. I would appreciate any help in this regard. Thank you!

I don't see any answers to your query yet. If you have round holes in both the body brackets and the fender brackets I would question the use of carriage bolts. Later body brackets had square holes which would accommodate the carriage bolt head. Those cars would have the lock-washer and nut on the outside or fender bracket side. That is what I usually see. The nuts and lock washers are on the outside.

I have an unrestored 1917 roadster with a known history since new. The nuts are hex, not square.

Show your nuts on the outside ! And for ‘14, they’re square. The whole purpose of carriage bolts is for the square shoulders to bite into the wood. And for the ‘14 taillamp bracket, the nuts are also square....

I just checked my '13, which is very original, and it has square nuts. However, it had a couple of owners before me, so they could have been changed.

All three bolts for attaching the roadster rear fender iron to the sill go through the body/frame bracket, then the wooden sill, sheet metal and finally the fender iron. The body/frame bracket has three square holes to accommodate the corresponding bolt shoulders.

In other words, the body/frame bracket, not the wood sill, prevents the bolts from rotating when you tighten the nuts.
