Looking for info and pictures of how to install a dam for number 4 rod in a 3 dip pan. Don’t want to reinvent the wheel, how have you guys done it? Thanks Dan

Hi Dan,
I always add a fourth dip to my three dip pans. I use a piece cut out of a old inspection cover ( you can get 2 out of a three dip cover ) the way I do it is to cut the dip to fit and duplicate a dip at the fourth rod and then bend up a 3/8" dam at the end to catch and hold oil. This simulates the horse shoe to maintain oil and it will pick up some splash from the flywheel. I make the dam as far back as is reasonable. I would not recomend making the dam any taller than 3/8" the first one I did I made the dam 5/8" tall, it retains a quart of oil in the dips and the engine smokes after it idles for a while. I will try to post a pic as soon as my phone decides to send it to my desk top. Az.Terry showed me this.
Craig.

Be aware that any welding in that area of the pan will cause it to curl up at the 4th main due to weld shrinkage. Just make sure to get the pan on a jig after your dam/ 4th dip is in place.

Dan,
Dan Mceachern is right. I would never assemble a engine now, until it has had the pan on a jig. I have in the past but after having pans straightened on a jig there is no comparison to the piece of mind and ease that a jig provides. Welded on or not. Thanks Dan.
Craig.

Dan-
If you don't come up with one, I have a full size template for a pan dam. I can snail mail a copy to you when I get home next week.
