FABRICATING A SPARE TIRE CARRIER FOR TOURING

Attached is a condensed photo summary of how I fabricated a rear tire carrier for my '21 T that has 30-inch split rims. It began with a salvage bracket I purchased as one assembly from Mark at Model T Haven, before he closed shop. These assemblies are also available on eBay. To cut down on weight, the frame might also be fabricated with aluminum.

I did the same a few years back by taking the mounting end of one carrier, cutting it off, and welding it to the 21” split rim carrier. My ‘19 Touring came with 21” split rims and I needed a good way to carry a spare….:)

Tom, nicely done. Are your rims ex Chev rims? I have those on my 24 tourer, just because I found 4 straight sided tyres the correct size for the car,4.40 x 23"

Thanks for compliment Allan! I think you're right that they are Chevy rims. Car and most of its parts over the last three years have come from Mark Freimiller's 'Model T Haven' which he closed and auctioned everything last November (see link below). Really going to miss his wisdom and used parts inventory! With regard to the project, goal was aesthetics, as I wanted the tire positioned higher and yet not to interfere with the top in down position. It appeared that most of the traditional spare mounts and attachments I found ended up with the tire positioned lower, which makes sense for function.
