Heinze 2.0

After making the Kingston Low Bridge I wanted to look into the Heinze since they had the same basic issue.

Here is the link for a refresh:

I found the reproduction Heinze spring steel was just a bit too thick so remade the points with a thinner vibrator. This addresses the issue of tuning the coils then finding they do not run well on magneto at idle.

The new points run very well on both battery and magneto and no more double spark. I ran these on multiple testers including the ECCT, HCCT and StroboSpark and they test great on all three.

I have several sets running in cars and all had great feedback especially on start up. Owners found these to run very smoothly, engine has power again and best the engine has ever run.

I did find an issue with some of the Heinze coil boxes that should be of interest for owners that run Heinze coils. Not sure if it’s a third party box or I variation the Heinze made. The issue is the adjustment knob is set back about .125” from the core.

These can be identified by a few differences, no writing on the adjustment knob and they use four brass screws instead of six. See photos.

This becomes an issue if the replacement points are installed. As you can see from the photos the tail of the vibrator does not reach far enough to seat in the adjustment knob. This gap does not allow the tension on the vibrator to be controlled very well so the coil will not stable.

To correct this I made a point with a longer tail, this longer tail will reach the adjustment knob and allow the coil to be tuned correctly. Once tuned run just as well as the others.

Also don’t forget Heinze coils can have several different combinations of coils installed.
1. Original primary and secondary
2. Original primary and reproduction secondary
3. Harvested KW primary and secondary
4. The reproduction primary and secondary coils the vendors are selling.

I have tuned all four combinations and can get all to perform strong and consistent. I did not really find an advantage that one set had over another so feel confident with any of the combinations.

I attached a few photos of the original secondary coils since it is a unique design by Heinze, the other coil in the X-Ray is a brass top KW.

Hope this helps get will help get those T’s with Heinze tuned up and running great.

Great information and thank you so much for taking the time to do this work. Being a Heinz coil runner in my 1912 (and having 3 sets of coils to rebuild) I watch this with immense interest. I can't thank you enough!
