Rear spring bolt

I am reassembling my 26-27 rear spring pack and this is the bolt that came out of it. It’s a square head but the tall tip is coned, maybe to make it easier to get in the hole. It’s clearly a specialized bolt but different than the square ones that are advertised as “authentic.” Just wondering if it’s a 26-27 thing or from a later rebuild. One of the springs in the pack is not marked Ford so it has been apart. It’s on the speedster, so authenticity is not a huge issue, just wondering.

The 8-5-28 parts book has no picture, but it shows #3837 tie bolt for eight-leaf springs 09-27, and #3838 tie bolt for nine-leaf springs 22-27. That tells me there's not a special 26-27 version of either bolt.

This shot among my pictures is labeled BOLT, SPRING, REAR, NOS. If I remember correctly, I got the bolt from Bob Bergstadt.

I've disassembled and reassembled several 26-27 rear springs, both 8 and 9 leaf. All have had a square head like the last picture posted; no dome like the one that you posted.

It is likely worn from movement in the cross member. Should be the large head as shown above. So is the hole still square?

No, it’s not worn. The shape is uniform and the whole bolt is covered in a black oxide finish. It is also 3/8 fine rather than course. The hole in the frame is still square. I suspect it is an aftermarket replacement done when a broken leaf was replaced.

The original style bolts are not available at the moment so I have reassembled the pack with this one. If I can get an original style one before the spring goes in, I might replace it. But I won’t loose sleep over it.

Yours is a fine thread bolt, so it is not like any original I have seen. If it works, use it. The square head should do its trick, but it may be difficult to find a square nut with the fine thread. Then again, what does that matter on a speedster.
