Correct engine bay wiring loom location

I have a 1923 Touring car with electric start.
What secures the wiring loom to the car as it runs to the headlights on each side?
I bought 4 of these 5033HS clips that are called hood shelf mounted wire clips.
Do I use two on each side?

Our Canadian sourced cars use two part clips. The loom is held between two identical pieces which have curved reliefs in the end to accommodate the loom. These pieces are held in place by the hood shelf bolts. I cannot find them listed in any of the dealers' catalogs, so it looks like they are Canadian only.

If you have a Model T service manual it has several views of a 24-25 T’s engine compartment. It might give you an idea of how it’s done if you check the pictures closely. Since your car may be a 23 low cowl it might be a bit different. Not sure about that. I have a 21 Low cowl touring and I put the loom wires under the hood shelves. Without looking at it the clips went under the shelves. The one on the carburetor side went under the shelf the best I could get it.
Maybe someone has a good picture of their car.

I can remember it was important that the wire loom has to be positioned correctly on the firewall in order for the loom to go under the hood shelves. If not they will seem to be a bit short to go under the shelves.

Snyder’s has these https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/prod ... &cat=41934

Not quite like the clips in the hood shelf pic.

Lang’s has these. https://cdn.modeltford.com/i/c/537l.jpg

Neither of the 2 styles shown are correct but would work.

What does the correct one look like?

Lang's is pretty darn close if you're looking for hood shelf clips...http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50 ... 1231999043

I do not possess the drawings, but Dan Treace is an extremely reliable source of information and as gleaned from his post(s) here is the following:

The wiring loom clips under the hood shelf were T-5033
The fuel line clip was T-2816
The fire wall look clip was T-2118 (snyders shows the correct clip for the P/N, while lang's shows the correct hood shelf clip but with the wrong P/N

The second reference Scott just posted shows the kind of clips I am used to seeing on out Canadian cars. In that forum thread, Dan Treace shows those clips, and an earlier photo in the same thread shows how they are fitted.

The clip in the first photo is for an early car.

Just a matter of curiosity, I have searched the Forum and parts vendors but haven't found an answer.

What is the T-2124 Commutator wire retainer, and is it at all helpful to have one?

Eric

it's a fiber strip that is used to wrangle the wires into a bulk configuration so as to not fly around loose to chafe on the timer retaining tab.

I managed to live for almost 15 years without one. After buying 2, and destroying 1 installing it, I finally succeeded in installing the 2nd one.

My impression: MEH

Thanks Scott. I don't do a lot of miles but have replaced so many timer commutator wires I've lost count. They usually break around the mounting tabs when the wires get oil soaked or stiff.
Is the T-2124 wire commutator retainer sold by someone, or is there a good picture/explanation of how to make one?

Should be easy to make out of some none conduction material (when wet too).

Wrapping the timer rod with friction tape will give some protection.

I've never been aware of the commutator wire terminal retainer, and never had one. Seeing it here my first thought was that I've never missed it, but I did once have the problem of the #3 blue wire terminal grounding against the control rod. Maybe the retainer would have prevented that. I fixed it by adjusting the bend of the rod.

I wondered what's the source of that T-2124 part number. In the 8-5-28 parts book we all have, the numbers start at 2500 and go up, with the retainer listed as 5033-B. Looking at parts in the encyclopedia I find that's the factory number, not the part number, and the part first appeared in the February 1922 parts book.

Frank, thanks for the pic. Now I get it ☺️

Scott, thanks for the link.

It never ceases to amaze me that after more than 40 years repairing and maintaining this car, that new (to me) parts and pieces keep showing up. :D

Eric

it is a part that was pretty late to the game...it was something to mitigate customer complaints, to be sure...

What year did Ford move the loom from over the top of the primaries to under them? My guess would be 1924?

I'd like to know too, and the source of the information. The encyclopedia shows 1919-1925 wiring all the same. It even mislabels the 26-27 wiring as "pre-1915".

The 1925 Ford Service book clearly shows the location of the looms and clips on a 1924.
