the answer to your question is tell them to put the shaft in a swivel vise using v blocks.
swivel the vice until the taper indicates straight with the machine ways.
use a 1\4 woodruff key cutter and key it .135 deep.

Bought one of the solid-state coil testers we put new capps. And points in the coils and set them.
Now I don't need as much advance. Philip

oil seal

Tried to do the glue on oil seal trick on a fellow
Club members car. I got the seal from langs
Split it every 1\4 inch or so flattened it out
And put it on backwards but it is too thick to allow the pulley to go on. Is there a thinner
Seal. Philip

Re: Checking for rod bend on a lathe

A false crank pin and a wrist pin in v blocks on a surface plate will show you
What is bent. And most are bent and I suspect they get that way soon after
They Re installed. Philip

Re: universal hubcap

Yes I have considered brazing also I have a metal spray torch the backing is a good idea. One thought I had was to thread a new brass ring leave it a little thick then cut the threaded portion off of the hubcap and silver brake the new ring on and then
Finish the outside. Philip
