Re: Failure to proceed…
Not a huge deal since it occurred pretty close to home when I had a lot of help. The fuel system is very clean (no rust in the tank, rebuilt NH carb etc.). It has been a couple of years but not that many miles since I had the carb out. The tank is full, which may be contributing to the issue (pressu...

I went out tonight for dinner with the car club and my 22 conked out as I pulled into the parking lot. It has spark and compression so it is a fuel issue. Re: Any tips on a fan belt tach drive?
I like the one that runs off the fan hub. That would be a simple way to do it and using a rubber drive rather than the belt would be simple. I would need to do some calculations to get the ratio right. The mounting is pretty easy as well. The only difference is I am using the 1926 water outlet/fan h...

I have a great old tachometer that reads in hundreds of RPMs that I am using on my speedster. A while back I saw a tachometer drive that ran off the fan belt in a picture of an English car, but I can’t find the picture and have never seen another. Muncie bushing questions
I am working on my Muncie 3 speed and making good progress. I got a brand new idler shaft from Dan Mceachern and a really nice input and output shaft and a bunch of small parts from Karl Von Neumann. The new input and output shafts a fractionally better than my old ones. The old idler shaft was worn...

Re: Making new rear hub, correct taper
Eureka!! Now I understand about zeroing in on the back side! Took me a bit (and some explaining from Scott Conger) to think it through. I have cut tapers before, but this is the first time I have used a male taper to cut a female matching taper. It’s fun to learn something new, especially something ...

Re: Making new rear hub, correct taper
Yes, the axle will fit through the spindle. But, if I set the angle of the compound rest to the taper with the axle sticking through the spindle, the minor diameter of the taper will be furthest from the chuck. If I did it this way, I would have to chuck the hub with the flange held by the chuck and...

Is that for setting a taper attachment? If it is, I don’t have one. I cut tapers with the compound rest.

Re: Making new rear hub, correct taper
Yep, but the reamer would make a better finish. Also, I would need to cut the axle off (it’s too long to go between centers) to fit it in the same way as the hub taper.

Making new rear hub, correct taper
I am making some new hubs for my Dayton wheels. I have been reading the old posts on the wire discussing the correct taper and there does not appear to be consensus. The original drawing I saw says the axles use a 1-1/2 inch per foot taper. This works out to a 7.15 included angle. I can cut the tape...

Re: Muncie transmission bushing question
Thanks Craig, that’s what I was thinking. I can order some bushing material and fit it properly. I am thinking of replacing the bushings in the idler gear as well while I have it all apart. They are a bit worn on the ends so the gear is rubbing on the case instead of the bronze. This one is in prett...

Muncie transmission bushing question
I have the Muncie apart and am looking at replacing some bushings. There is a bronze pilot bushing in the input shaft that the end of the output shaft rides in. As it is now, the bronze pilot bushing is a slip fit in the input shaft. So, the outside of the bushing can turn in the hole in the input s...

Re: A metric Muncie?
Thanks Craig. I am going with the open bearings. I know it will leak a bit since the Muncie has no seals, but, it’s the way they were and, you need to get oil past the input bearing to oil the pilot bearing in the input shaft.

I have worked on a lot of old cars and equipment, but this is the first prewar American thing that I have ever run across with metric dimensions (bearings and shafts). I opened up the muncie auxiliary transmission that is going on my 26 speedster to clean everything out and check the bearings and bushings. When I went to measure the shafts they were .865, which is very odd and just under 22mm (.8661). Today I went to the bearing shop to replace the two main bearin...

Allan,
That has been done on one of my original hubs, if making a new hub does not work, I will give that a try. I think with some pins and some stud and bearing mount. That would work fine.

Re: Best way to cut a keyway in a hub?
Graig, the bore was monkeyed with in an attempt to “restore” it and is not save-able without welding and then I would have to do the machining anyway. I would rather start from scratch and have a hub I know is good.

Best way to cut a keyway in a hub?
I have an original set of Dayton wheels and hubs but one of the rear hubs has a bad bore and keyway. I have looked for another, but so far no luck. I am getting ready to machine a new hub, which is work, but not really hard. The challenging part for me is broaching the keyway in the hub. I would nee...

Re: Looking for a pair of Rocky Mountain brake bands for a 26 (buy or trade for earlier bands)
If push comes to shove, I could make bands. But, I understand the parts will be available once things get back to normal for the folks who make Rocky Mountain.
I am not sure those bands are for Rocky
Mountains. They have a bracket I don’t see on the ones I have.

Re: Looking for a pair of Rocky Mountain brake bands for a 26 (buy or trade for earlier bands)
Sorry I did not make it clear. I am using custom brackets that support the Rocky Mountain brakes and drop the axle. So different brackets are not an issue for me. I just need the right bands.

Looking for a pair of Rocky Mountain brake bands for a 26 (buy or trade for earlier bands)
I have a new complete set of Rocky Mountain brakes for a small drum car, but I need a set for my 26 speedster. I checked with Chaffin’s, who normally carry the bands separately, and they are not available at the moment. I was planning to keep the parts for the small drum as spares for my 22 that has...

Re: Splitting the wishbone for a speedster
I could not find the bolts I needed so I cut down long shank 3/4 inch cap screws to the correct overall length, turned them down to closely fit the axle and brackets, then cut threads on the ends. They came out well. I made the radius rods, which bolt to the side of the bracket and but up against th...

Thanks for the tips. The drag link is parallel to and close to inline with the radius rod. Both the radius rods and the drag link are pretty long, which should help with bump steer. I have abandoned the stock front end wishbone for my 26 speedster and gone with radius arms between the lowering brackets and the frame (see the attached photos for some shots of work in progress). Re: Tight drive shaft bushing…
Nice tools. The spiral reamer is definitely the way to do it. I ordered an 8 flute reamer, which should have less chance of snagging than a 4 scraper adjustable one. If that does not work, I will turn one from bar, fit it to the tube and shaft, then cut the grease groove. Time consuming, but cheaper...
