My hood former has a hole for the rod from radiator to cowl. Above the hole is another smaller hole about 3/8 " . It is exposed to weather. What does it do?

New owner of 1916 Touring. Separated the chassis from body and removed rusted and dented fenders and running boards. Next week take body for bead blasting and then start patch panels. I have since learned they are the truss rods. One straight and one with a dip. I believe 1/2 inch stock. I have some square nuts and some hex nuts on this car so that is why I am wondering the correct fastening.
