Drove the Model T in the snow today.
I drive my cars regularly. Like every day regularly. Up until the time I put a Russ Potter carburetor on the car and Coil Dr. coils they were hard to start. Not anymore. My starter-less ‘13 starts on the third pull, regardless of temperature. We had a late first snow this year. This morning was the ...

I did not enquire if Rootlieb or anyone would make them. I only got these on Saturday. Thanks Wayne, I’ll be discussing all those things with the fabricator. Yes, I’m aware that beads, size and form will impact the cost as to whether it’s a Ford or a Cadillac. So the question is:
Does anyone have a contact of someone who can make my unique sheet metal parts preferably in Michigan, Ohio, or Indiana?

I purchased some rough fenders yesterday. They are perfect for patterns. Any recommendations for a person who can reproduce these?
Preferably they would be located in Michigan, northern Ohio, or Indiana.

It wasn’t helical cut or herring bone gears. Some time in 1920’s-30’s??? Someone figured out if the angles on a straight cut gear tooth was cut differently they were quieter when they meshed. There was no need to take into account thrust, it was the simple change in gear tooth angles. Sorry don’t ha...

They made 6. The reason the transmissions were so quiet was because the gear teeth were cut to modern angles. The drawings given to the gear cutter had the original tooth angles and he refused to cut them that way. As far as why the didn’t last, abuse is the main reason.

I’m not an expert in copyright infringement but I don’t think changing the name a little to try to get around it works. Re: Band Eating transmission
Next time!!! I can’t see my face in these, but there’s no machine marks/grooves. Maybe I’ll just slip some 400 grit between the band and the drum. Just kidding... If I can figure out how to post a photo I’ll put one up showing the finish on those drums.
I appreciate the tip.

Re: Band Eating transmission
Hi Norm, bad use of terminology. When I say I was adjusting the clutch I meant low. The clutch does not slip in high gear. Interestingly the cams on the pedals and cover were replaced. Unless the repro parts were really bad that shouldn’t be the issue. Clearly something is amiss. I’ve had a lot of g...

Re: Band Eating transmission
NO. I haven’t pulled the hogshead again. I’d rather have a root canal. I do know one guy, maybe you’ve heard of him, a Jerry Van. Jerry and his late father are the reason my cars even run. I just sent him a quick note. This is what’s tough to understand. The pedal cams were changed. I did it several...

Re: Band Eating transmission
John, That makes sense!! if the pedal cams which by the way were new and I changed the ones on the pedals too, and changed the shafts weren't engaging correctly then the adjustment would be gone but the band still good. I took a photo but I'm struggling how to upload it. If I can talk him into it, I...

Re: Band Eating transmission
The hogshead and pedals did get new cams and shafts. I forgot to mention that. The clutch pedal did go overcenter when I first stated the adjustment, I added enough so that wouldn’t happen. I’m using Quaker State SAE 10w30, no additives. I’m fearful of adjusting too fast. Yes I’m confused by the con...

Re: Band Eating transmission
They are modern clutches. The clutch slipping in low is only to get the car moving from a dead stop. My other T with Kevlar bands gets driven the same way and I haven’t adjusted those bands in a long time.

Band Eating transmission
Okay, I don't know this for sure, but I don't like where this looks like it's going... A little background is in order. I have a '22 Coupe. The engine and trans were overhauled a long time ago by Ron's Machine Shop in Ohio. Among the usual babbit, pistons, rings etc. the trans also got a new brake a...

Re: Polishing Repro Fronty covers
Really nice. It’s gotta be tough to get a consistent finish on all those fins. What I found was even with hand sanding on unobstructed areas I made decent progress in a reasonable time. It’s the letters and the recessed areas for clearance to head bolts that aren’t going to shine up with a power too...

Re: Polishing Repro Fronty covers
I have one of those. I’ll give it a try. One thing to be careful of is not grinding the raised letters off. I’ve had experts do that in the past. Anything near the letters has to be done by hand.

Re: Polishing Repro Fronty covers
Thanks Dan. I wrote a long response and found out the site was down. What is a DA sander? I’ve had mixed results from “experts” who polished parts for me. I prefer to do it myself. I’m into it now for about 2 hours and I have a long way to go before I think it’s okay. I’ll try some of the coarser pr...

Polishing Repro Fronty covers
I recently bought a reproduction Fronty valve cover. The surface finish wasn’t smooth. I’d like an almost mirror finish for looks and clean-ability.
I sanded with 600 wet/dry paper and it’s much improved but wondering if there is a trick I’m missing.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.
