POW POP BANG
I backfired for the first time recently in the open express switching from Battery to mag. I have switched over many times before with no pow pop or bang. Several members mentioned checking the the switch. some haft to be jiggled to find the sweet spot. Vendors sell a under dash magnetometer / AC Voltmeter. that would allow You to keep tabs on Mag output as You start and drive.

A 6/12 volt load tester will work on 8 volts. The load resistor in the tester will work on any voltage it will draw max current on 12 volts and less on 8 and 6 volts. the only difference is the scale markings on the meter. Jim. The HF 6/12 volt tester $19.95 should work just fine for what Your are doing. it is not calibrated for 8 volts. So You test it on a known good battery and establish Your own base line for a good battery. The load resistor in the tester is most likely the same for 6/12 volts just the meter scale...

I also find that after the T sits for a while the generator will not show any output when the engine is first started. but after a few minutes of running will start charging. Haven't had to jump it off yet.

Does the frequency / speed of the pulsation vary with engine speed. Try putting filter caps across the headlight wires as close to the bulbs as possible. The caps will act like a filter and short circuit the pulsating ac voltage. while not affecting the dc voltage going to the Leds.the long wires go...

Mark try the BA15D works much better in my estimation. plenty bright. it is made in both 6 & 12 volt. and pattern should have a more even uniform spread. 74475 was well built. super bright to the point of being too bright on a road with other drivers. unless Your driving out in the sticks with Jeff....
