I back at getting a 1919 Center Door running after 77 years in storage. It has the generator and starter options.
At present the head is off, valves out, coilboxes overhauled and also out, carburetor overhauled and out, no battery in, generator out for testing and switch/ammeter out to fix the fact that BAT does not make a connection to COIL. (I...

You can certainly test the starter with the engine head removed, but it won't be a great test since it won't take much torque at all to spin an engine with no compression. It will tell you whether or not the starter is dead or alive , I suppose, and if the bendix will engage. It won't tell you if the starter has the power to turn over an engine...

There have been a number of occurrences recently where a Model T craftsman has passed away and all of their knowledge, expertise and experience went with them. The license plate bracket, taillight base with single socket are one piece.
The lense holder can is seperate. You basically need another tail light unit & will have to change the sockets in both to double sockets.
The stock light is a running light, no stop feature.

You need to check your timer. It is probably worn or dirty or needs lubricated with a light oil, if it is a Ford type timer. I suspect that dirt or gum in your fuel system is causing your carburetor issues. There are several things that can cause the problems you're having, and all can be usually be remedied without spending a lot of money or...

Patterson Speedometer Drive for Model T
Replies: 4
by

First post
Unlike the NASH transmission mounted speedometer drive sold for Model T's, which used more than two gears, did the Patterson drive use only two gears, one on the transmission output shaft and one on the end of the cable which was secured to the transmission inspection cover?
Last post
The drive I have has a four start spiral gear and a 10 tooth fibre pinion gear which is well worn. The top right hole in the cover is round as usual. All the others are slotted. I presume this is to allow some sort of mesh adjustment between the spiral gear and the pinion.

You don't need the height to identify a low shell. If the sides are square the front, it is a low shell. If the sides are flared outwards to the rear, it is a high shell. The height may help if one is not aware of the above.

About 2+ years ago I installed a reproduction New Day timer assembly on my '26. Yesterday while wiping out the housing, I observed what you see in the attached photos. I was shocked. My best guess is there's only about 1000 miles since the timer install. Looking for opinions or any applicable advice.
Thank you,

In retrospect I should have posted the arching however in that the mag never worked right from the beginning after a full rebuild including rebuilt coils. I did not consider that the arching would have discharged the magnets that I fully charged individually and pull tested all magnets to exceed 3 # with a spring scale. Now we all know that can...

When building a speedster, every modification is likely to lead work-arounds later in the build. For example, If you use a dropped axle, you will have to consider which spindle arms to use. If you introduce a double wishbone, you may have to reconsider spindle arms again. Adding an accessory transmission leads to further compromises/alterations....

There have been a few posts recently about starting the engine with the timing advanced and I was surprised that some people do it intentionally. The combustion...

And again.
All it takes is just one time and you’ll find out the hard way why the spark is retarded when hand cranking a T. We have to remember our modern cars and trucks do all the thinking for us when we start and drive them.
WE have to do the thinking for a Model T when we start and drive them. Its just the opposite in our modern vehicles.

Thanks for your replies, Gents. The venturri in mine is not pot metal. Looks like someone made a steel or iron one for it in the past (magnetic). Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Last post
The flange on the valve stem and the ridge on the bridge washer make a physicsl connection when the stem is fitted. It should make no difference if the stem looks a little plasticy . All that is needed is some crush. Who knows? Maybe the new stuff won't ever blow off the brass stem tube like it has on tubes in the past.

Door Garnish photos needed for part made out of unobtainium.
Does anyone have clear photos of the three metal garnish items on a coupe door, want top, front, and rear of door around the window glass. Since I cannot buy all three and want them to match, I might as well make them. We already have the two window sill metal garnish pieces. A photo of...

Jeff,
Thanks, ordered the two garnish pieces and four brackets for Coupe from Snyder's. It was all in stock.
I also appreciate the window glass installation instructions in an old post.

I’m relatively new to T’s. I have a ‘26 Roadster and now just purchased a ‘22 Canadian Touring. Very excited to get the ‘22 home. I’ve attached a photo of my 2 year old twins Violet and Nora sitting in the Roadster. They love model T’s as much as me!
My question is this: did the Canadian cars have their own versions of the owner’s manual? I know...

Hi Alex, you can find on-line versions of the Canadian Manuals (and other publications) here:

A new (to me) leak

After driving my ‘14 Touring 100+ miles this summer, she appears to have developed a new leak. When I added the small drum ruxtell a few years back, I swapped out the right hand axle housing with the original 12 rivet one, just to keep the “correct” look. But over the last few weeks in my shop…

Allan and Steve,
Great work with the bolt based “rivets”. I do believe that the axle tube will need to be separated from the pumpkin casting to get a decent seal. I guess that before rebuilding the original axle, I’ll disassemble, clean, and bolt-rivet the both axle housings to reduce the chance of future leaks.
So the first step will be to pull...

To get ready for another assisted living show tomorrow morning I drove the T over to the gas station to fill up, I pulled up in front of the store and went in to pay for my gas and out of nowhere I got one of Florida's famous ten minuet deluge. After it was done I dried out the plug dips and started the car. It idled just great but when I went to...

The rain gutters for wood firewalls were not available until 1919...I have a 1917 but installed one anyway. They show up now and then at swap meets. Below is a Vowell drawing showing the arrangement. The arrow points at the gutter.
Originally they used felt to seal between the body and firewall. Any suitable weatherstripping is probably a good...

I recently discovered that I have a slightly bent axle on the drivers side of my ruxtell. I had the rear jacked up to more easily crank start and I noticed a little wobble. It isn't horrible but it is noticeable. It may have been like that for ages and I can't think of anything that could have caused it. Am I an idiot if I put off fixing it for a...

Its pretty common to see axles bent at the tapered end. I personally dont think it presents a safety issue absent other issues.

I am trying to SPARK an interest in forming a Coupelet Club. I have had discussions with Russ Furstnow (the coupelet King and Speedometer Czar). Together we have a list of 79 people who own (or previously owned) a coupelet (1915-1918). These rare model T's are quite a sight to behold and a real blast to drive. All coupelet owners are invited -...

Frank, congratulations on getting a coupelet. Please post some pictures and give a description of the car.
The mirrors I put on my coupelet came from England, from a company called Vintage and Classic Spares. Google them, go to their website and scroll down to exterior mirrors and search for Desmo 263. It is a very heavy, well made mirror that...

Daisy Mae being my '14 Touring. The front axle/steering assembly is restored, just about ready to button up the rear axle rebuild. I knew the tranny had issues, biggest concern being 3/8 play in the drum pack. But the engine ran very well, albeit some oil burn, and some bubbling at the head above the lower water outlet. Compression was great,...

The folklore I call the Flows too fast theory is persistent. As mentioned, if it flows too fast to cool down in the radiator then it's flowing too fast to heat up in the engine. What counts is heat removed (BTUs) not temperature change.

I would guess 1911. The rear fender appears to be wider at the front whereas the 1909 and 1910 rear fenders were parallel lengthwise. Also, the engine pan appears to have the removable cover underneath.
Neat car regardless! In spite of the people in the way.

This showed up at a local auction yesterday. The calendar is 1921, so I assume it would have been produced in 1920. The car shown has side lights and non-demountable rims, so a car without a starter. I dropped out at 200.00! Neat item.
