Help identifying this wood coil box ??

I’m stumped with this one. Background is it’s from a very old antique autoists estate. Obviously NOS throughout. Just as pristine as an item can ever be found nowadays, with original shellac finish overall, and great patina on the metal parts. Uses a later Key to operate the switch. The switch housing is old timey Gutta Percha, or more likely...

I love it! Congratulations to whomever gets to use that on their NRS Ford!
The workmanship is beautiful, and appears well thought out.
My first thought when I saw the pictures, especially of the switch using a 1917 to 1922 switch as a base? Was how much alike it was to a faux wood coil box I began building a few years back for my mid 1913...

For those who have purchased my battery boxes: I offer you a huge thanks. Most have paid up, which is encouraging.
Most people will be using a standard group one battery. (I wonder when the industry stopped making Ford style batteries)?

Look at the first two photos. It appears that there is an oil soaked pad on the back side of the piece. What would be the reason for this?
The third and fourth photos show a cloth piece. I wonder what is its purpose.

Jeff Hood, You are right the pad is to lubricate the dovetail. I cleaned up the dovetail and found the holes, one on the top and one on the bottom of it. I have attached two photos showing them.
I think this detail is a good idea, and it is another small example of the Model T's many good design features.

Any new tips or advice on setting the gap on Champion X spark plugs? Just received a set and the gap is way too closed and the curved electrode wants to bend away from the center electrode and not sit across properly. Does one attempt to bend the center electrode instead? I just don’t want to break anything and have to float a loan on more!😊

Prefer this gap tool as the outer lever tabs can fit under the outer electrode at different spots. Makes tweaking that electrode easy. Just use real gentle pressure by rotating the disc with the tab edge on the rim of the plug to lift the electrode up or down , depending on where you place the tab.
The loops indicate the gap as they just clear...

Remember that the spark energy is not what makes the engine run. The spark serves to ignite the air/fuel charge, the rapid and expansive combustion of which is what make the engine move.

rereading your question regarding voltage...starting on MAG, with a good magneto and a not-too-stiff clutch, you will or should get, about 2.0 - 2.5V from the MAG. If your coils are properly adjusted to 1.3A, then you should be able to get it to fire. Starting is not about voltage; it is about amperage

It took 5 1/2 hrs. to do the things shown in the photos. I had previously taken the rear fenders, running boards, splash panels, package tray, and brake handle assembly to the blasters shop as a test for problems. It took 1 1/2 hrs. for those eight pieces.

He'd paint the tires and rubber floormat with some kind of black goo mixed with drip gasoline. It had a strong odor, but it looked great. The process never seemed...

My assumption is that the motor and transmission is pre 1919 as there isn’t a spot for a starter motor which is fine by me I’d rather crank start...

If you have driven in parades (lots of idling and low pedal) with a Berg's, Brassworks, or other new radiator with no water pump, did you have any overheating? If you've driven in really hot weather (think Phoenix in July) with a Berg's, Brassworks, or other new radiator with no water pump, did you have any overheating?

I do recall some time ago that one accessory that is allowed on the Montana 500 is a brass plate at the head's water outlet to slow the water flow and let it go through the radiator slower so more heat can be removed.
Water pumps do the opposite!
Is this a true situation or an April 1 Joke?

Thanks for the great information Wayne and Keith (and for the original post John). When I think of Model T's, I find myself placing them in approximate groups. I have read the never-ending debate of what coil set up device works best so I don't want to start another one of those discussions.

Why could you not set the amps with a buzz box to get them close and...

You are missing the part about the size of the internal capacitor and the fact that it is normally bad in an original coil or the fact the coil will still buzz with a big arc at the points and not last very long.

First off, bodies in the 1910s were mostly made by outside body suppliers, not by Ford. So they varied quite a bit from one supplier to the next as well as even one batch order to the next. Although by 1920, many if not most open car bodies were being made by Ford, there still were a lot of variations that continued.

Went together quickly <1hr. Well worth the $70. The old wood I removed was cracked badly..... an ignition problem in the making.

Joss came out Wednesday afternoon to
meet me as I unloaded - the plan was
to give driving lessons to Jared - but as
sometimes happens - the Model T didn’t
want to start 🤷♂️
Thanks to Rudy Nelson - my diesel mechanic
and my friend - in Winslow, AZ - for getting
the Model T running...

Hi all,
I have gotten the T running (and driving a little) and noticed that it left a trail of oil everywhere. It seems like it's coming from the gasket between the block and pan toward the left rear. I think that a section of cork gasket may have opened up at this spot. Is there any kind of fix for this short of pulling the engine and separating...

Not that I needed another project but........now I have one. The sediment bowl on my '26 coupe never really shut off properly so having a nice tight original replacement I decided to do the simple replacement today.......NOT . With a proper sized pipe wrench and some effort, I broke the bowl off the tank fitting flush with the fitting and now need...

This has a happy ending. Just a couple of notes on some of the thoughts on this. As far as drilling out the fitting slow turning pneumatic drills are a option. Almost all penitrating oils are flamable. Exhaust is a scarey prospect, the fist gas tank exposion I witnessed was using exhaust. Make sure the engine is warmed up & the choke is off, there...

Thought I was headed down the speedster route, but commander has issued new marching orders. I've got an opportunity of a complete 26/27 roadster body and all sheet metal, radiator, cowl, headlights, etc., but have 1920 rolling chassis that is a family project and needs to get used. I can deal with minor issues like running board brackets, splash...

I believe you'd wind up going to a great deal of trouble and some expense to wind up with a modded-up body and chassis. I'd use the '20-ish body and the chassis you have. Since you've built a wood body, I'd think you'd be equipped and able to deal with re-wooding the 20-ish roadster body. With all that said, it seems to have become a trueism that...

My speedster has the front axle mounted in front of the radiator. This necessitates a longer crank. I fabed one up, but have a couple of questions.
How far back from the ratchet end is the spring pin hole drilled?
Is there just a pin to hold the spring in place, or a pin and washer?
I can't seem to find any pictures.

I think this has been discussed before, but here is a possible new bit to review.
I think most records consider 1919 as the start of regular Made in Canada engine blocks. But there I have seen or heard of a few late 1918 dated blocks.
Well here is one that may be one of the earliest Made in Canada blocks. Is a non-starter T block,...

Jim, I dont see the average bear steam bending hardwood on a compound curve. I have not made roadster trim strips, but I do a lot of woodworking. I would consider making a stiff paper template using the roadster body to determine the shape. I would transfer the pattern onto thin strips of hardwood about 3/32 thick and glue up the strips using the...

Thank you gents for all of the feedback
I am inclined to believe the hubs are custom made and I will find someone with lathe etc to make me a new one
I will go ahead and start using locktite on all of my hubs as I also lost a much more complicated hub on my 28 Buick

If it's an original coil with the Ford large capacitor and the glass, I find it easiest to ease the side of the case off - the side opposite the terminals. You're going to scrap the capacitor, so just ease a blade down the side and force the joints apart.
The old glue is weak; I've never broken the wood.
Then you can pull out the capacitor and...

It might work, but the inlet is straight thread for flared pipe, so you would have to do a fitting in between the sediment bowl and I think 1/2 NPT in the tank. Sorry forgot about that.
