I am working on shortening the torque tube. I have a NOS ball and it fits perfectly. But, there is 40/1000 play fore and aft when the ball is installed. Okay, so I am completely baffled. A few weeks ago my Magneto completely stopped working even though it is still out putting power. I think somehow it is grounded but I don't know why it is still out putting power then. Any thoughts? I have tested everything I know to do with a voltmeter.

I need to have a Model t axle ground the entire length to use in a Perfecto 2 speed axle. Ford axles are ground only in the the places where the roller bearings ride. Perfecto requires one axle be ground the entire length to 1.062 Where can I get this done?

If you clean up the steel tube of the column the brass quadrant can be slid down the tube so you can get at the column under the quadrant. Then you have access to the area of the case body and working the steel column with light hammer blows can be much more targeted. So I I have been planning to install some Rocky mountain breaks in my car. Recently I found out an interesting problem. My original brakes have so much stopping power I can lock up the rear wheels. Would a better upgrade be to get wider Wheels? Mabey Chevy ones?

Here are the height measurements I found:
T3600A Left Front 1-1/2”
T3600A Left Middle 1”
T3600A-B Left Back 3-1/2+”
T3600A Right Front 1-3/8”
T3600A Right Middle-1-3/16”
T3600A-B Right Back 3-1/2+”

Note the center on both sides is lower forcing the frame to bend.

How many of you have built a Model T from parts? I mean every single part, including nuts and bolts? That includes building a complete engine and transmission, rear end and everything! How many know the difference between an original Ford bolt and nut and the Home Depot variety. The new replacement bolts that Lang's sells are an exception.

Folks I just learned yet another Model T'er has been diagnosed with Covid. John Worford from Eustus Florida. He recently acquired that neat 1909 from Don Lang, took the poor guy forever to get it home. He's not had a lot of time to work on it and I pray he will have lots more time for it. A few days ago, a discussion was started on how to prevent wire breaking. In the post was a photo of a coil box, with a different type of nut, being used.
My question is this, has anyone used these and how good do they hold and were do you find them.

I too use brass thumb nuts but without any washers on both the coil box and spark plugs. When the nut is almost tight, with the terminal a little to one side, I turn both the nut and terminal tight. Most of the time, they stay tight.

Just started taking my car apart and I will be removing the running board brackets tomorrow or the day after, I'm going to center punch them and drill the rivet head centers, does any one know the rivet shank size, I could use different size bits until I get the right one but if somebody knows it would help, trying to not over drill bracket or...

Thanks all, I removed them last night, spring loaded punch, 1/8 pilot hole followed by 1/4 drill, rivet heads all fell off.

I have a 22 model t and it seems the running board braces are bent . End to end they measure 59 1/2 inches
These closest I can find are 26 27 measurments are 62 inches . What is the best way to bend them ? Cold or heat them up ? Would 62 inches be the correct measurment ??

Back in the late 1960's, I had a Depot Hack made from a 1923 touring car chassis. The body, I think was a Syverson body made in Illinois. I don't know if it came with an under body spare tire rack, or whether the previous owner added it, but there was a place under the wooden body in the back that the spare rim and tire, slid into.

Some of us have both Model T’s and Model A’s. I’ve hand cranked all my Model T’s but have never thought of trying it on my 160A. Considering the different crank design and difference in compression how hard is it to start a Model A with the hand crank? With my arthritis I doubt I’d ever try….

Can anyone identify this tool?

The seller that I spoke to thought it was for removing valves out of a Model A, which it certainly is not meaty enough to compress valves by any means.

It is a valve spring compressor for Model A and Model B 4 cylinder engines. The tool in the second post is used to remove the valve guides in those engines. Hope that helps.

Yes, Once the valve guides are tapped out with the tool the valves come right out. Guess I should have been more specific….😊

I am working on shortening my torque tube and the ball on the one I have is pretty beat up. However, I have an NOS replacement ball (see below). I want to install it while I am doing the shortening. The rivets on the original look like they were pretty randomly installed. I can remove the rivets and the old ball, but I would appreciate any...

Thanks for the advice. I have the old ball off and the tube is almost 10/1000 larger than the hole on the new one. I can turn it down to a good slip fit. I like the idea of getting it aligned and on with locktite, then doing the rivets. I will make sure to do it at 90 degrees to make my sons life easier at some point.

Just performed a clean up of my '26 fan assembly. I used moly bearing grease. Correct or no? My rear cap did not have a felt washer underneath. Is that required? Seems like it should help with grease loss.

On the way to work this morning I found this rim in the trash, I think it has a broken repair crack , I don't have any spare, welding it is no problem for me. The tire on it says 30/3-1/2 oversized, I haven't tried to put air in it yet

Remember to keep the metal valve stem -- it can be reused...
If it's old enough. If the tube is the modern type the stem base may be too small for reuse.

Can anybody tell me if the bolt with the grease cup HB-FT listed in Langs is the same for Twin and Single Hassler front shocks? Mine measures 3 long as stated in the catalog. I am restoring a set of Twin Hasslers for the front of my TT.

Working on 1920 roadster that came to me in pieces, so no vehicle history. Engine has starter motor and foot starter switch, no floor boards, so I don't know if body had hole for starter switch. No brame mounted battery holder and deck for turtle deck is metal skinned with no access foor bor battery. After reading some posts, felt around the seat...

There is no need for a special plug for a remote battery charger. The battery under the seat, next to the fuel tank just sits there. I charge it when I get home again by hooking one lead on the charger to the battery terminal on the coilbox, and the other to earth on a manifold clamp.
On my depot hack, I do the same. Its battery is under the seat...

I have driven over 200 miles in the ‘25 Coupe this last week and it runs great. I started it up yesterday morning, ran for 8-10 seconds then died. Thinking not enough choke started again, ran for 5-6 seconds and died. No gas flow?

Took the bowl off the carburetor to check the float needle, turned on gas valve at carburetor and minimal gas flow....

I have what I guess is a curiosity question, reviewing voltage used for the starter circuit.
Previous to knowing better, I used 12 volts on two well driven cars for years, without any modification to the starter. Both cars had alternators.
We ran both of these cars for many years without damage to the bendix spring. Both cars started very easily...

Last weekend I was installing LED headlights in my 16 coupelet and accidentally applied battery voltage to my mag post. The result is a dead mag, luckily I have a battery installed and can run off it. Is there anyway to revive the mag without engine removal?

I'm working on the wood for my 26 touring. It looks like the seat bottoms sit in a metal frame. When I order the seat springs do they come with a wood frame that sit in the metal one or is the fabric held in place with Hog rings?

What is the difference between a coupe and a Doctor's coupe? Is it the size of the turtle deck? Is it taller? I saw a photo of a turtle deck which was taller/different from what I'd seen on others. Thanks,

I need a whole new top for my 15 runabout. Currently there is nothing on the car. I have a vendor in mind for the top material I just cannot figure out who makes a decent set of irons (metal structure). Any suggestions?

Nice job Mark! My '17 bows were a little more of a challenge because the wood bows are steam bent, not straight pieces like the later cars. Should the inside perimeter around the quarter and rear windows be painted on my 1927 coupe? The locations are shown in the attached photos.

A thin coat of a sealant that would remain flexible would be the ideal for wood. As mentioned, paint or other coating that cracks or peels will allow moisture in, and then the remaing coating will tend to keep moisture in the wood. A penetrating sealant, like thinned down paint, is best. I don't know why contact with steel promotes wood rot, but...

After fresh oil loosened it up enough I could only get 3 volts AC, after reading past posts I gathered 3 hot batteries and my good 00 wire jumper cables, couldn't find anything other than north, and a little less than north I just picked a spot I could find again , marked it on flywheel, after 2 days still had 7 volts AC, then thinking about coil...

To answer the authors question, according old literature, 10,000 volts is required to start a model t. This equates to a spark gap of about 125 inches.

Took the engine apart to inspect and repair some parts. Was looking at the distributor and wondering what I have to do to get the gears lined up correctly. The cap is marked 1,2,3 and 4, so that part is done. I know I need to set it on TDC. Then what?

Depends on if the arm for the timing lever is clamped on or part of the housing. The Bosch (009?) would be setup that way, with the clamped on arm.

I am attaching several photos near the door on my 1927 coupe to show small threaded screws that I am puzzled as to what they are for. The first photo shows one that is holding a piece of upholstery. I don't remember others doing that when I removed the upholstery, but probably they were.

I doubt they would be connecting the two structural...

I'm looking to replacing my transmission bands on my 26 coupe. I 'm wanting to use kevlar. Does anyone know a vendor that sell kevlar and will install them on my bands? Thanks

Thats what I remembered, the breaking down of the backing.

Let me add, the normal scandia lining installation method can cause serious problems using kevlar. The loop created MUST be COMPLETELY down flat against the steel band.
A small bump(hi spot), will create a constant friction & can be a reason you cant properly adjust a band.

I assume the best way to remove a door on a 1927 coupe is to take out the hinge pins. I haven't tried it yet. How difficult is it?

I have a coupe and a fordor so i bought a hinge pin remover from Snyders, it takes them out with little fuss and pushes them back without taking the paint off.

Did Model T camshafts ever had a keyway for woodruff key up front where the timer fastens? I have a Stipe 280 Cam that has nothing up there to secure the timer rotor etc - nothing at all. ?????

You may not THINK there is much torque there with the gear, but I'm betting that's all that was indicating the gear in the first place and there is in fact a good deal of torque transmitted.

Agreed. Think of the mag turning at speed, with the pulses in its rotation hammering away at the drive pin.

Better yet and if it was my car, I'd remove...

On my recently rebuilt 26 Coupe, I retard the spark, advance the throttle a few notches, enrichen the fuel about 1/4 turn, pull the choke and give it 2 or 3 pulls on the crank. Then Turn the switch to battery and it free starts probably 7 out of 10 times.
