A new (to me) leak

After driving my ‘14 Touring 100+ miles this summer, she appears to have developed a new leak. When I added the small drum ruxtell a few years back, I swapped out the right hand axle housing with the original 12 rivet one, just to keep the “correct” look. But over the last few weeks in my shop…

Allan and Steve,
Great work with the bolt based “rivets”. I do believe that the axle tube will need to be separated from the pumpkin casting to get a decent seal. I guess that before rebuilding the original axle, I’ll disassemble, clean, and bolt-rivet the both axle housings to reduce the chance of future leaks.
So the first step will be to pull...

I recently discovered that I have a slightly bent axle on the drivers side of my ruxtell. I had the rear jacked up to more easily crank start and I noticed a little wobble. At road speeds the car will go fine with the top up, but if you put it on a trailer, you should put the top down and if you have a boot, put it on the top when folded down. Especially so if you have a headwind. Don't ask my how I know!

So far, no one has mentioned a “dry test” vs. a “wet test”.
Dry is “as is”, for a wet test, squirt a little oil into the cylinder through the plug hole. Wet/dry variation can tell you something about the condition of your rings. From my experience, a “hold in” gauge is practically useless when checking out a model T.

Fitting to attach to the tire stem doesn’t have a point for opening the stem valve. Referring to the Dauntless Geezer’s notes...

If there is a pin to push the valve core stem down, there has to be a check valve on the pump. Otherwise, as Steve said , what you push in on the downstroke simply comes out again on the upstroke. On the inside end of early valve cores there was an external spring on an extended pin in the centre. Perhaps these are what you need for a hand pump to...

I'd be interested in your recent experiences with custom classic tubes. I ordered 4 tubes and did not know they were custom classics until I opened the box. I don't plan on returning them, I opened one and it looks ok, kinda thin, but ok.

Since it is originally a rebuilt starter & you are in the process of rebuilding it... can you tell if the marks were there necessitating the original rebuild. What was the cause for you to do a rebuild?

What is nickel plated on a ‘26 roadster?

Getting things around to get nickel plated for the ‘26 roadster I’m working on. Is there a definitive list of the parts that need to be plated?
Last post
I'm most familiar with closed cars. There are a few originally plated parts on my Tudor that I rarely see plated on restored cars. Such as the spark and throttle rods and the inside door latches. Some of the suggestions above seem more like 1927 than 1926. You should go by McCalley's books which are the best authority for a correct restoration.

I was just thinking about this. It's not the question you would think. What I've been wondering is this: how long was the T considered a viable, sought after piece of transportation back in the day? In June 1922 a 24 foot mahogany Gidleyford boat was delivered from the Gidley factory in Penetanguishene, Ontario to Detroit. The trip took 3 days on Lake Huron stopping in Tobermory, Kincardine and Sarnia. The pilot must of been weather lucky as Lake Huron can have huge waves along the eastern shore, not good for a boat of this size. The boat was...

Yes, the 24' Gidleyford would probably been a bit of a novelty.
Odd chance that Henry would of cruised on the boat on the Detroit River.
That said, there might be a photo or two of him on it.
Perhaps some other Ford executives made use of the boat.

I have a set of Excelsior tires I bought over a dozen years ago. They now have over 11,000 miles on them, and show now appreciable wear. I also have the USA made tubes in them with rubber valve stems which have held up equally well. I understand quality USA tubes are no longer available which is disappointing.
Last post
I just bought two 440/475 21 tubes last month from Summit Racing, they were identified as Coker on their website but Hartford is what showed up.
For what it's worth, I weighed both the Hartford Tube and an old Ward's Riverside Made in USA tube, the Hartford tube was a little heavier, so at least the rubber is probably just as thick.

The Y bracket is for the '26-'27 mounts that are on the body. The Y 2873 is for balloon tires, 21 .
The lower stud fits to a rim lug nut to secure the rim and tire. There is a flanged rim nut with holes to also chain the tire and rim with a padlock

Do you have the shift lock off the axle housing? Look under the shift fork in the lock body. The p124 finger is below it.
In that finger a 1/2 headed hex bolt should be facing you. Its possible that bolt has fallen out or sheared, in which case a 5/16 hole is seen.

I'm hoping for constructive input from the forum since many attendees are historically minded folks. I recently obtained a 1920's era National Cash Register Model 720 that resembles what I've seen in period photos of 1920's counters at auto parts store, auto service centers, or other auto rest stop businesses. As I looked into my NCR I discovered...

I have one that is similar to the model 720- illustrated. And two narrow ones. Plus one large one. All are available for sale. must be picked here in Minnesota. (Near Minneapolis)

Nothing but a giant jigsaw puzzle with no instructions on the box.
Work is going slow as I am taking my time and test fitting to get the best fit I can get.
Maybe in another year I’ll have the windshield installed.

Float a Ford Auxilliary Brakes

I have Float A Ford auxilliary shocks on my 1923 Toring with small drum axles and Ruckstell.
I would like to keep the shocks but install some form of auxilliary brakes. Rocky Mountains will not work.
Like to know if anyone else has done this.
Last post
Hi Grant,
Judging from the pics I found of Float-A-Ford's A-C, Stronghold & APCO small drum Auxiliary brakes should fit you may need to remove a little
from the underside where it can't be seen for clearance. The A-Cs I believe are available.
Craig.
The AC Brakes are available from Bennet Machine in Oklahoma. I got a set from Daniel, great guy...

Are the upper and lower tanks the same on a low and a high radiator? Can a high radiator be recored as a low radiator? Thanks, Art
Last post
That brass radiator has the top inlet 3/8th inch off center, but it is hardly noticed until you repair one with the part on wrong side out and then it is 3/4th inch off center.

I have a 1914 Touring with a full set of Victor lamps. The headlights & tail light were electrified at some point in the car's long history. A couple of weeks ago I driove the car to a neighboring town about 20 miles away to see how it would perform. This coming weekend it will go to a car show & chili cookoff in another town about 25 miles away....

On mine, the lens was loose and just slapped JB Weld over the edges. Can’t fall out now

And, found that on bumpy roads the door flew open, a lace of wire fixed that. ;)

Does anyone know what month in 1917 they started using the flanged oil pan? Thanks

In my experience, the folded edge on the pan was a progressive introduction. The edges were folded down either side of the pan ears. When the ears were modified, the entire edge was rolled down. Some time later the pressed reinforcements were added either side of the radius rod ball socket.
The pan on my 1917 has the folded edge but no reinforcing...

Hi All,
I’m still confused as to how the body blocks sit in the channels under my 27 touring. Does the rabbitted cutout face up or down? Do the blocks attach to the body before dropping the body? Something so simple seems confusing. I didn't take this part of the car apart so there was no photo of the originals. I’ve searched past posts and can...

While my early '26 touring made it to me quite original and unrestored without excessive wear there are a few things that make you think.
And not just how it survived being in a barn that collapsed on it.
Only body bolts #2 on both sides are 3/8 carriage bolts with washers. The rest are all the expected 7/16-20 bolts.
I can not prove for sure if...

one of my coils are weak, i know because when starting if the commutator is rotated such that one of the coils is buzzing before i crank it, sometimes i hear a strong buzz other times its weaker, and sometimes its real strong, I don't know which coil(s) are making the weaker noise nor do I have access to a tester, how do I get them all going about...
Last post
If you turn the crank just a little bit, and the buzzing stops, you are OK.
If the buzzing continues, you have a problem!

Hi.
Meanwhile I successfully replace the roller timer by a new (similar) one.
I also verified the distance of 65mm / 2.5 between spark advance rod on timer and the screw at oil fill socket.
Because the battery was empty, I connected the battery charger and tried to crank start the engine for first test run while the battery is charging.
Of...
Last post
don't know what Henry smoked when designing the timer-advance-rod, but that stuff was not good.
It hits the engine block, rubs on water hose, is too close to the timer, ... There would be lots easier ways to link the timer.
If parts are stock, the Ford timer rod for the year of your T will work fine for doing timer adjustments....

Similarly, the ECCT with software is a must have tool for coil analysis and adjustment.

Just a quick question about over heating. I just got his 22 running for a friend that inherited it from a step father. Beautiful car. The story was the car had a rebuilt engine when they got it. I just fixed the carb from setting for a few years. Car starts and runs great (have not drove it yet) but in about 5-10 minutes it will start...

Even if the tube are clear and it flows good it still may not cool. Over time the the fins are no longer in good contact with the tubes and can not dissipate the heat. As noted Brass Works is the only one making new radiators. They do have a back log.
