***1923-1927 Ruckstell Differential for Model TT***
Replies: 1

First post
Later style 4 pinion differential. The addition of the extra two axis for the pinions made for a total redesign of the housing. Outwardly it looks pretty much the same, but in actuality has a thicker flange and the short screws are splined. The only thing I'd not sure of is if there were cotter pins on the nut side or lock wire like on the worm...

I’m in help of a little help. I’m checking the shims on my 27 Model T and was replacing the cap and oil dipper, when one of the nuts stated to just spin on the bolt. It will not go on or come off.?
The bolt is not turning.
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, how do I remove it.

Since you'll be replacing the rod bolt and nut anyway, why not use a nut splitter to remove the nut?

When I mounted the Rocky Mountain bracket on the backing plate it was real close to the radius rod bracket (closer than I felt it should be ). I came across the Vogellart for this installation and saw they have 2 flat washers between the brake bracket and the radius rod bracket. I did this and this did provide some clearance between the two, but...
Last post
Thanks Terry, I've got them installed. Written instructions are great (sometimes), but in this case I felt that the two washers behind the brake bracket was the right way to go on the big drum installation, it created a small amount of clearance between the brake casting and the radius rod bracket. Thanks for the offer.

Glad you found the wobble issue! I’ll bet that has happened over the years when shimming the spokes. Probably in the T era and driving on dirt and rutty roads people weren’t worried about any wobble but on smooth roads and a keen eye you could see it. Good luck.

Remember that Ford's Model T production fell off mainly due to war time material's priorities making for shortages for car production. There was labor shortages due to the flu,

A stock T engine does not need a high zinc oil to protect the cam/lifters. The low speeds, low spring pressure, light valve train, low lift, and mild cam profile make it un-necessary. Corey Walker » Wed Oct 13, 2021 10:30 pm
It seems like I read before that the original steering wheels were one piece of wood with one finger joint. I sanded the old paint from this one and it is a single finger joint but on 2 pieces of wood, an inner and an outer. I’ve seen wheel rims advertised as “2 piece”. I pictured 2 halves put together, not 2 one piece rings glued together. Is...

HIMICO made their own pan, and its clear the one in the eBay photo isn't for car use, no wishbone setup. So stationary use would be my guess.

Hello fellow Model Ters,
Other 1910-1912 Ford Touring cars have these brackets installed inside the fore armrests (under the upholstery) to give rigidity to the leading edge of that armrest.
My Ray Wells body has them behind the back doors but there is no evidence that they were ever installed up front. The ones pictured were recently...

The brackets you show are for the rear seat .
The brackets for the front seat are a simple L version & do not have the zig zag on the lower leg .

Plastic Cased Coils….

Many moons ago the plastic cased Model T coils on the market were criticized for poor quality and dependability. Do the newer ones sold now work ok?
The reason I ask is that in my area of Texas near the Gulf Coast our heat and humidity cause regular wood cased coils to expand and getting them out of a coil box is sometimes nearly impossible. I...

Greg: Plastic cased coils and wood cased 'ford' coils function alike. On magneto, both types fire during rising or falling portions of the AC voltage wave form. The magnets are 'timed', that is positioned on the flywheel to give 'optimal' but discreet firing times. Ron Patterson has written several articles on this subject, this one addresses your...

The indentations are there to make the thickness of the magnets consistent. When metal or any malleable material is bent the material at the outer radius is pulled in tension. At the inner radius it is in compression. The material flows as the molecular bonds are broken and reestablished. The thickness of the magnet at the outside radius will...

You would need to determine how the field circuit is connected on the application the regulator was designed for. As I understand it, the T generator feeds the field circuit via the 3rd brush, thence through the field coil series, thence to ground. I want to thank all for the help on this and Rajo Racer for hitting it on the head. After timing the brush plate it worked fine and put out a lot of amps. The regulator is good, guess since the gen was not charging it did not fry it.

Diesel fuel

A guy in our club said he recommends adding about 1 quart of diesel fuel to the gas tank at fill up. He said it would help give a nominal boost in compression. Said he does every single fill up. Is there any truth to that?
Last post
Adolph Diesel was the inventor of the oil engine as it was known, fuel oil used was available in several grades with graduated lower flash points. The various grades were priced accordingly from the lowest price with the highest flash point to the highest price with the lowest flashpoint. Except for the lowest flash point oil frequently referred...

Hershey - Maybe Next Year!

Unfortunately, I was unable to get to Hershey in time to take place in the Meet & Greet. I was privileged, though, to meet Steve Jelf at the car show, standing in front of a 1915 Model T Runabout (imagine that!). I also ran into Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg restorer and historian Randy Ema as he was peeking under the hood of a Cord in the Car Coral....

Anyone know anything about the RUSHMORE SEARCHLIGHT? Used on cars? Model T's??
Last post
That one is actually a head light. I can tell by the mounting bracket . All rushmores said search light on the chimney whether headlight or an actual search light. The search light model mount was made to swivel up and down and also had handle on the back. $80 Is a pretty good buy for one in that nice condition.

Took the 22 out for some test driving today, working on my shifting. Stopped for a minute when I noticed a fuel smell that seemed pretty strong. Gas cap had a decent amount of gas on it, I assume from the little breather hole in it. But I also checked the engine and noticed that it was wet under the #2 spark plug. Heart kind of sank a little. Is...

Beside a little oil around the spark plug, if the threads are worn enough, you might even hear a little whistle or a chirp when pulling a hill. Caused by the combustion gas leaking out. Sealing them does fix both problems.

I know there are people on the forum who know the trick to get the headlight gasket to stay in place long enough to get the lens and outer ring in place. I'm thinking about small dabs of silicone on the gasket to hold it on the reflector. I had also thought of hoisting the front bumper up high enough for the rear end to almost touching the ground....

An update to the gasket problem.
Thank you all for your suggestions and support. I used hot snot (hot melt glue) on the gaskets and it worked perfectly. I had a bit of trouble with the left headlight not working but I figured it out to be a contact problem with the light bulb. All is working as it should and the delivery truck is coming along...

I have just pulled the engine apart. I never turned it over when I got the car as u didn't know the condition of the engine. That's an early cam that needs the long front bearing with the notch in it. There are two different front bearings and they are not interchangeable.

Just using a bottoming tap will not clean out the compacted carbon and guck at the bottom. The tap will do a great job of compacting it even more. I use a drill smaller than the diameter of the hole and gently break up what is in the bottom. Don't force it, or you will need to seal the bolt threads when you go through the bottom of the hole into...

My friend has a generator that is questionable. It has a John Regan voltage regulator but he's not sure of it's mechanical condition.
1.) Who near Michigan would be a good choice to rebuild it, and
2.) What would it take to convert it to 12 volts?
Last post
The fun projects regulators only work for the voltage designed. There are 3 - 6v, 8v, 12v.
If you are going to charge 12v, !/2 the generator output. 4 amps should be plenty.

I wonder if anyone has any experience comparing the operation and performance of a Holley G versus a Holley NH carb? I hear many people say that the NH is one of the best carbs ever made for the T while others praise the G. I have a nice G on my '17 and just bought an NH to try. I'm curious what to expect. Note, both carbs are Russ Potter rebuilds.

I put Holley Gs on my 1912 and 1913 replacing Holley NHs. I like the Holly Gs much better. Much easier cranking starting, better power accelerating and better power on hills. I have since sold the NHs.

I just today noticed a piece of small-diameter rubber hose on the choke control wire, the purpose of which, I assume, is to prevent the wire from falling through the slot in the firewall. This seems kind of shade-tree to me, so I was wondering if I’m missing a part here? I’ve been told I have a Holley NH carburetor, if that makes any difference....

Yes. When you install, check that @ rest the choke plate is horizontal.

My 27 Roadster hasn't had a battery box for many years now, but I just bought an Optima battery and am trying to figure out how to hide it. I'd love to have a metal battery box and lid but that is beyond my budget right now.

Russ's photo shows clearly what the battery box looks like. The seams are on two sides only, and that is what the Snyder and Langs unit lack. Not only that, but a real Ford battery case will not fit, which is typical for some reproductions.
Page 13 in the service book figure 41 and 42 clearly shows the installed unit, and page 29 figure 83. Note...

Don’t waste your time screwing around with any of the “maybe this will work” answers.
Take it to a RADIATOR SHOP and have it prepped and painted. They can properly do it with the proper materials so the paint sticks, stays looking good, cools well, and has good longevity.
Professional radiator paint, properly applied, is heat conducive and won’t...

The top looks like the back curtain slants forward and the wheels somehow look too small and the tires too big.
Feel free to give your opinions, it is advertised as a 1925 model year.

I don't want to turn this discussion into an argument, but when I see a water pump IMHO it's usually a Band-Aid for a cooling issue. Take a close look at the radiator - if it's a round-tube, (the vertical tubes are round) it probably needs a radiator. If it's a flat-tube (the vertical tubes are relatively flat) the radiator has probably been...
