Model T and Model A Fans…..

In the 33 years I have owned my Model A I have read numerous articles regarding safety issues with original fans cracking at the rivets and possibly flying apart. My Model A did in fact have a cracked fan. The Model A world has numerous replacement options.
There does not appear to be the same problem with the Model T and 3 vendor sites I have...
Last post
The original two blade model A fan is hollow, and internal corrosion can be undetectable, and look perfectly fine, until they aren’t. All the originals are well beyond their life expectancy, and should be replaced. That is, if you value your sheet metal, radiator and/ or skull. The new ones are very nicely made, solid aluminum, powder coated. Wish...

Where on the factory ‘25 Pickup beds would I find the Ford stamping in the metal?
I would think somewhere on the mounting brackets?
I have an early bed(without Ford script embossed on the tailgate)it’s very nice with about 65% original paint and the rest light to medium surface rust.

What is the length of the standard rear axle shaft. This would be the one with the tapered end with a key for the hub. VS the length of a Wide Track shaft? This would be the length from the differential to the end of the shaft for one side of the axle.
Norm
Last post
Period Parts books, rear axle 31-1/16 . A wide track front axle would put the front wheel about 1/2 it's tyre width out side a standard fender.

I have only looked closely at 12-15 Model T blocks over the years and have noted how crooked the numbers stamped on some are and how straight they are on others I assume depending on how rushed or experienced the worker on the assembly line was at the time.

Tilted fender.

So my left rear fender is tilted. Is the hanger causing this? It seems like the end should be parallel to the ground. If so do I bend the hanger by hammering it on an anvil or some other method? I tried to bend a front fender hanger before, it did not go well.
Last post
The fender itself may be slightly warped to one side. I had a good pair I had bought for my 21 Touring and after painting them before final assembly I noticed the right one slightly warped. I slightly bent it downward and it’s pretty close now. I should have caught it early before painting. I guess I should have looked closely first.

It is on! You do have to back out the U brackets all the way to get them on. Getting the cotters off, backing the U's off and putting them back on was work but the cool factor of the tire carrier is off the charts. Lang's is out of the lower stud so I am using a rim bolt temporarily.

I placed my order yesterday morning and received it this morning! Not only did Snyder’s have everything I needed, but FedEx did their job too! I figured, seeing it was a rear axle and an long box, I’d be lucky to see the order in 3 or 4 days. Not so.
Kudos to both company’s for a real good job!

I’ve always had great service from Snyder’s also but FedEx dropped the ball on a order this last week. Kept my Snyder’s package for 5 days just 20 miles from my house. Everyday their site said on the truck for delivery and every night I get the “Delivery Exeption”. Of course I get no refund for my 2 day delivery charge…. :(

Uncommon Allen HCCT on eBay

Uncommon Allen HCCT on eBay.
This one has an Allen manufactured flywheel, not a Ford flywheel.
I believe this was sold as a complete HCCT.
Allen also sold a HCCT kit to which you would add a Ford flywheel/magnet assembly and a magneto field coil.

The Model A had a butt ground lifter but it also had an oil hole picking lubrication up from the lifter galley directing oil directly on the lobe. Adjustables do not have that design so they must lubricate the lobe through a radiused lifter.

We could buy off-the-shelf 2 long bronze bushes to suit T model front and rear shackles. A set of those could be left just long enough for that shackle to work well. Good original forged shackles are likely better than the repops available. Yours may not even be for a Ford, but they are likely better than others you will find.

Hello....I put an oil sight gauge that I purchased from Snyder's on my car during the last oil change. It seemed to make checking the oil level very quick and easy because it is easy to see the oil level. Last night I started draining the oil out of the car when I realized how late it was and decided to call it quits for the night without...

An interesting overhead no doubt... and have no idea what it is. The Roof 8 valve heads had 3 exhaust ports, and definitely had a water outlet in front. I suspect that the wad of paper towels stuffed between the rockers are plugging the upper water outlet...?

I found this tool, with Model T parts, I purchased last week.
The name on the side is very faint but it appears to be ( New Britain VL-200 ).
Any clue, what it is?

Yep thats a valve sring compesser. They make them in all sizes from Briggs & Straton to big truck. I prefer them to most made for model T's they give you more room to install the pin in the valve stem. You can add washers to the yoke if its to small for what you are working on (up to a point)
It's allways great to get bonus tools.

How long can the T run on battery ignition ?

What is new to my T is that it sputters under acceleration (even on level ground).
I opened both outlets at the bowl and carburetor - fuel was running freely and was clean.
After that for a few miles everything was fine, regular acceleration power.
Then again sputtering (I hear 'patch patchadipatchpatch' from the carburetor), letting fuel flow,...
Last post
What I found out is that there is no stuttering when I move the throttle veeery slowly and steadily down to accelerate ///// This suggests a weak ignition system. It may or may not be a battery voltage problem. If you can run on mag most of the time, a good battery will last a long time, assuming you use the starter very little. Besides a problem...

The front seat was stuffed with horsehair, and rodents had had a field day. Some of the metal was damaged through the years, and the whole thing stank to high heaven.

The old man steps up to his car,
It is a very old one with narrow tires.
It has a crank handle out front,
And he grasps it with his right hand.
He puts out a wire loop on the left,
And pulls up the crank four times,
then steps around to the left side
And turns a key and a buzz is heard.
He returns to the crank and takes hold,
He spins the crank...

Change from distributor to the standard commutator
Replies: 2

First post
How difficult will it be to return to a conventional commutator from a distributor? Is it simply removing the distributor and alternator and installing a generator and timer along with new wiring and coils and coil box?
Last post
If you have a coilbox, all you need is available from the vendors, but I would go to one of the coil rebuilders for coils rather than buy new ones.
There are alternative timers available, mechanical ones like roller or Anderson flapper style, and electronic ones. Your choice, your expense.
Others will have other ideas.

I have restored a set of Ash three bolt wire wheels that I'm have trouble truing. Does any one out there have a connection for truing wheels in the Portland Oregon area? Tom 503-644-9374 I can include pictures if necessary.

Tom, you need two things, a wheel true and spokes in the wheels on which you can screw/unscrew the nipples. If you can loosen the nipples on the spokes, you may be able to true the wheels. Otherwise you are stuck with what you have.
My wheel true is a deep U shaped stand into which the wheels are fitted. I have a spare front T spindle and short...

Got off the the phone with Steve with another assignment (retired teachers 🤦♂️🤦♂️) Radiator fixed and back together. He had me check one of the local McDonalds hours and if the dining room is open. Seems the ones in Kansas and Missourah have been closed for takeout only. He’ll be at one tomorrow morning for breakfast and WiFi and post about the...

Glad to hear Steve is on his way. He should be able to get WIFI from the parking lot. Looking forward to seeing him again.

My late ‘19 Touring top is made of a tight woven material I assume is cotton. Do not know when the current top was installed or if it is correct. To clean I have always used just a damp cloth and the car is stored out of the sun all the time. Is there any particular liquid or spray product that I could use on this to protect it further? I have a used brass windshield frame pictured. So I have this diagram from Lang's which looks to be the proper dimensions but doesn't include how to tell the glass shop to cut the curves? I am intrigued of using Lexan, DYI'ing it and not having to do the glass shop. Lang's says 3/16th 0.1875 thickness but my home store only has 0.118 thickness or...

My local glass shop is weird about doing auto glass. We don’t do auto glass. But they will do safety glass. Uh ok.
You need to go to an automotive glass shop, like maybe Safelite. They have several locations serving Houston. Safety glass and auto glass are NOT the same thing.

I haven’t seen an operational carbide gas light generator in person and have only read about them. I was looking at the internal baskets of one I purchased last year which is pictured below. I decided to see if if the bottom one held water. The lower basket leaked water. I was curious if the only water tight compartment was supposed to be the...
Last post
Yes, the tank should hold water. The byproduct that will end up in this tank is calcium hydroxide. It is quite corrosive, and you’ll want to wash and air out the generator and internal parts well after use. I used POR-15 on the inside of the generator, which has held up well. I also line the lower basket with a crock pot liner, which makes cleanup...

Ok.... I realize I'm on thin ice here but I found out something I thought I should share. I made the choice during the resurrection of of my 1917 to add a starter and go 12 volts. An original 6 volt starter worked...but not great. After a few tours I updated to a WOSP 12 volt geared starter that I absolutely love. With the original starter there...

Tim - I suspect you did everything right for an original electrical system - six volts - heavy gauge wire to the starter, etc. It's a system that has it's weak points but has been pretty reliable for over a century. I did not mean to belittle the original system....with the choices I made it just didn't work for me.
The problem Tim, is that...

So I am turning my attention to the brass horn pictured. As the picture shows it does not have a junction between tubing and horn. I test fired the whole rig just touching the parts together and it worked.

There appear to be multiple brands of 4 post lifts on the market. Any recommendations as to a good brand or comments/bad experiences with any particular brand? The issue of raising the front end or rear end was solved by buying tall jack stands. I raise the lift to normal height and place these jack stands under the axle and lower the lift a couple of inches. The front or rear is lifted to work on wheels, brakes and just recently changed shackles on a 25 T. When I changed the shackles I put the jack...

Hi, the rear brake linings are on but now the wheel won't go on. The other side went on snugly and does not roll freely. This side doesn't seem to go on at all. What am I doing wrong?
Last post
Adam is correct. Wheels should turn freely with brake off. The position of the hand brake lever when all the way forward, the pins should go in without forcing or bending the rod. This can be done by adjusting the clevis either tighter or looser. When it is correct, the lever should not move when you push in the low pedal. If the lever goes...

My Touring 1916 is one of these where the entire body, including the firewall, has to be lifted for freeing the path to get the engine out.
First I thought that the sheet metal funnel between Engine hood and car body/firewall is an independent part, but this is wrong. The funnel is mounted to the firewall and cannot be removed. Meanwhile the...

I was trying to find the year of construction and the use of it.
It is a Fairbanks Morse 10 cylinders engine.
Thanks
