On my 1926 Ford Model T coupe the throttle lever slips down making an unwanted acceleration especially if I have hit a bump. The notches where the lever is supposed to click in are almost worn smooth. How do I fix it?

Thanks MWalker for the tip on bending the quadrant down. It worked great for me this morning. I had been putting off disassembly and adding heavier springs. This was much easier.

I have been chasing an idling issue for several weeks. I thought I had identified the cause - an intake manifold leak. The engine stumbled/died if carb cleaner was sprayed at the either intake port. I replaced the manifold gland/copper ring gaskets and cured the problem associated with the front port but not the rear. I have had the manifold off...

Anderson timer: setting ignition timing?

I've never had an Anderson or other flapper. Can you set timing the same way you do with a roller or brush timer (turn until you get a buzz, then back off a hair)? I don't expect to change timers, but if somebody asks I don't want to give them wrong information.

The reason to use #1 is that it's easiest to reach and put your thumb on the hole to find compression when you pull the crank. :D

I don't know if you're doing this, but for one thing, do not sit for any length of time with the timer retarded. When idling or waiting for a light or anything else, be sure the timer is advanced such that the engine has attained it's highest speed at idle. Some folks will throw the lever up and let the exhaust bark out the back while...

You may look your timing... it is often the responsable for overheating. Also be sure the fan properly work without sliding belt... Also be sure the fan blade are correctly oriented. Other point, flush your radiator as Jeff said. Last point to validate, you may have leaking intake cause overheating either. I'm saying all these elements because I...

When the Union Pacific Railway decided to restore a Big Boy locomotive, they originally chose an example that was on display in, if I remember correctly, Texas. That example was later abandoned due to the fact that the railroad bridges between Texas and the U.P. shops in Wyoming wouldn't bear the weight of a Big Boy.

I saw three Warfords the other day. One was slighlty larger, and had a removeable plate on one side, possibly for a PTO. It says Plant No 1 Syracuse New York on the side with the plate. The other side says Warford with patent information and the company address with a number 920-1 .
Is this Warford for a TT ? Sorry I cant add photos.
Thanks

Re the cast iron one with side plate; Yes was really for TT, but can be used in a car. Do a search of MTFCA; Warford It is a little more involved than just bolting it in. When used in a car, you needed a different rear support then the truck, the frame depth was different.

Another benefit of the Aussie made copper gaskets is the heavy weigh of the material. They can even be filed a little to make a taper on one side which will make lining up and installation easier, and even compensate for a little warping downwards of the rear and front ports.

Calif law is sometimes difficult to interpret, but if you have a car that qualifies for Horseless Carriage plates you do not need a brake light IF the car did not come with one! I think they all sound different to some degree. They aren't musical instruments; they are alarm devices. Many of them emit a sound evocative of that emitted when a goat comes into contact with an electrified fence.

If you remove just enough tacks to insert a new pad and you do one bow at a time, it should be possible. Definitely would take 2 people. The straps are the most important part for holding the top in place and you are not changing those.

The first sentence in the original Stevens Instructions says to check the “hardness” of the axle with a file. If a file cuts it, proceed with the installation. If file does not cut it, aneal the axle with a torch. Says nothing about reharding the axle.

I just rebuilt the engine in my 1915 runabout. It has a slight miss starting at almost exactly 40 mph. Up until that speed it runs perfectly. I am using a roller Tiger timer. Does anyone think that may be the problem? I’ve heard of roller bounce. Does that seem like a reasonable explanation?

I have 2 tapered rear leaf springs, one is apart and I don’t know if it all goes together.
The main leaf shows signs of a square leaf had been riding on it, so it probably isn’t correct. It measures 34.5”X 2”
The rest seem to line up, but not sure about the curled one.
I have to get a picture of the other one yet, but it looks correct.

On a closer look, the main leaf does not look like it belongs to the rest of the leaves. The two outboard bends are way more shallow than those on the tapered leaves. The wear mark you are seeing is most likely from an ordinary chopped leaf. There is one leaf missing on top. That one has just the main curve over the top of the pack. The rest look...

The windshield support rods on the two Ts in front look to me to be bowed out a bit suggesting rear folding windshields making them 1914 model year Fords. They all look fairly new as well. That would mean the photo would have been taken no earlier than late 1913.

Some drums are a bit beyond balancing by removing metal. If the casting is poorly centred at the time of manufacture, it may require so much material to be removed that the part is compromised, as it was in this case. The best answer is to find another drum. The new ones are much better balanced, being CNC machined.

just so you know, a cut-out is a cut out. A voltage regulator is a voltage regulator. The VR was a very popular product as it detected when the battery needed a charge and when it did not, thus keeping the battery from abuse at the speeds we drive.

I’ve been a machinist and to die maker for over 30 years. Any time that I’ve ever made a key from scratch it was supposed to be .001 or so oversize. Pulled out my hubs today as there was some oil on the axle nut and found the safety hub O ring was broke. Would someone know what size it is? I tried one I have and it was to thick. Thank you.

Being curious, this morning I Googled this type of tester. The cheapest one I found of this vintage was priced at $125, and it was pretty rough. Some in better shape were $350 and $400. :o

How cool is cool enough?

Just for a theoretical discussion I'll make up some numbers. Let's say 50/50 antifreeze keeps my Model T's operating temperature down to 190º. Some folks claim that Product X will lower that to 180º. Is that better? Why? A related question: How cool is too cool?
Last post
180 to 200 is fine. Running cooler than 180F invites sludging of the crankcase and carbon deposition in the combustion chamber. A well-worn engine may operate a little better running around 180. A tight engine in good tune would probably rather run about 190-200F, and could be expected to stay cleaner and provide better fuel economy at the higher...

It is a simple matter to bend the forging with the bolt out towards the ramp a bit. One crescent wrench across the arm, another across the first wrench to work as the turning lever. Inserting the bolt head down will help, providing a wider contact on the cam.

Have a look in your coilbox. Make sure all 4 coils are pushed down to the bottom. One or two might have been pushed up a bit by the jolt. The resultant misfire could be causing your smoky exhaust issue.
I once drove across a railroad crossing that had the middle filler piece missing, between the rails. I got airborne! As I landed, the hood flew...

I got this tail light from a box of miscellaneous parts from the major donor to my Model T project. I’m guessing there is a clear lens that goes here. Any input? I’m planning to use this as a brake light (perhaps LED) as I have an oil lamp as my tail light.

We have a 1926 improved touring. We are changing our wooden wheels to the metal spoke wheels. The gear that is attached to the wooden wheel has screws into the wood. How is this gear attached to the metal hub? Is there another gear or a method to attach this gear to the hub?
Thanks for any help.
Nick
Last post
Sorry, I didn’t take any pictures and the car isn’t here. I just put the hub in the lathe and scribed a line so the bolt circle stayed concentric. I used 1/4-20 slotted screws and made the standoffs long enough to clear the wheel. Basically the same as a wood wheel.

I have used the yellow teflon tape on two of my cars. I wouldn't recommend using this, as it had failed after one to two years of service.
What I have found to take it's place is Gasoila. It is a thick liquid that is applied with a brush. I'm anxious to see how it works out.

I agree with Jeff, the yellow tape is for gas applications. (when I say gas, I’m not referring to Petrol!)

You are correct John. My apologies for misleading anyone The early photo looking down on the flywheel clearly shows one piece gears. The wear on these is typical for such gears. That is one reason I prefer to use the riveted three piece gears.
