1912-early ‘13 exhaust manifold and pipe question

First post
Hey guys, I recently discovered my early ‘13 Canadian touring still has it’s original exhaust manifold which has a bore for the exhaust pipe and no flare. It doesn’t have any packing in it and leaks a bit. What is safe to use for packing? I can’t flare the pipe as there’s no where for the flare to seal against. I have some ceramic cloth I bought...

I have known a few people to wrap a single turn of standard copper electrical wire around the pipe. Whatever size fits best, usually 12 or 14 gauge.
Just an idea.

After sitting in the garage for some months while I worked on other projects it finally became time to work on the '14 Touring project again. Now I am finding lots of info on the Hucks Starter, much of it here on MTFCA already! Is it possible that during the change over to the improved 1926 T that any of the late 1925 Cars could have been built with the new 1926 Engine? I know most of the parts are very different from the frame up but is it possible that the new block was being produced before the end of the 1925 model year ?
Last post
That makes sense Frank, but then the manufacturers make a mockery of that when the new calendar year comes around. Then they heavily discount cars with the previous year on the plate, even though the new calendar year cars are the same. If it was built in 2018, it is a 2018 car. Just because Henry made changes to a car in August one year shouldn't...

There is a discussion of the Holley G float level in the Model T Service Manual (sorry don't have page number). It includes information about a stick with a 1/16 nub (high) on one end, and 1/8 on the other end (low). You rest it on the edge of the cup (as shown above) and use it to measure the gas level below the edge, it should be between 1/16...

I see this with a lot of older cars--people put different wheels on them sometimes when they need to work on the car. I've seen them with trailer wheels, old donut spares, etc., stuck on there to help move the car around a little bit.
If someone had an old Ford chassis would they be able to stick a modern wheel on there to move it around, and if...

In the early 1940s an adapter was available to mount a Plymouth wheel on a model t rear axle. My father's utility trailer, which was made from a 26 or 27 pickup truck, was fitted with 600-16 wheels. It worked well. I still have the axle from it. Last used in 1974 then allowed to rust away.

I gather that engines were made in only a few plants (Detroit, Long Island, Manchester, Walkerville ) and were shipped to the many assembly plants (Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Los Angeles, etc., etc.) to be put into cars. Were engines made anywhere other than those four places?
Last post
The Long Beach, California assembly plant was not completed early enough to produce Model Ts.
The first vehicles to roll out of the Long Beach plant were Model As.

I’ve been thinking of getting the left hand Ruckstel shifter from Lang’s to give me more leg room in my 27 Roadster. Lang’s add says the lever runs up through the hand brake opening in the floorboard. That seems like a crowded fit, will the hand brake still function correctly or am I misunderstanding the instructions ?

I also shorteed my shifter handle so it doesn't hit my leg .

Thanks so much Steve. That's what I wanted to know. Somewhere along the line as with most T's the engine was replaced. The good thing is that the frame of the car was used to title it so if I ever have to replace the block I can.

I have, what I believe is a replacement block. Casting numbers show 9-16-19. Serial number is 1338787, July 10, 1916. So a possible flat needs to be repaired on mounted wheel. Right?
Jack up the axle and then use two pry bars, similar to doing it on a bicycle?
Last post
If you get a flat on the road, the tyre will be warm, it will likely be loose on the rim if the flat is progressive and it will already be stretched to fit the rim. All this makes the job much easier. I take the tyre off the car with whatever levers available. The last one was done with T tyre irons, but longer ones are better. Lightly inflate the...

Timesaver’s most appropriate use is a new rod on a crank that hasn’t been machined. Say, the oil line plugged and you starved the #1 rod and you want to replace it in the car. After clearing the tube, times saver can be used on the new rod. With a ground crank and a properly babbited rod it shouldn’t be necessary.

As a general guideline you can use the specs given in this chart, BUT... use with care on our old machines and old fasteners.
At least it gives you a ballpark value, but proceed with care, inspect threads and holes...

So I'm still travelling back with the speedster in tow. I stopped in San Diego, pulled it off the trailer and drove about 40 miles. It wasn't too bad but the bands need work and the ruckstell has no high gear. Anyways not I'm in Houston at a friends so I pulled the motor out and started replacing the bands and resealing the hogshead.

I have been hearing about fan failures and damaged radiators, hoods and other bits for years. I converted the '23 Runabout to the newer fan & ball bearing hub years ago & more or less forgot about them. They don't give any issues.
Now I'm working up a '14 Touring to be a tour car and got to thinking about the fan & hub. The hub throws grease all...

Just for interest speaking of different carbs, this is a SU I'm fitting up on my Speedster. The motor is pretty much stock but for Chevy valves, aluminum pistons, stock cam grind with a advanced gear and a low head plus a distributor. Ran pretty good with a Simmons carb. Interested to see what the SU does for it. 20210728_200146 small.jpg

What mine problem is that some of the buttons will not work and it beeps by itself as long as power is on. Seems that is a problem with the keypads when production went to Mexico. This is second keypad, but it is a 2000 production.

Welcome back to the future.
This is like the good old days when the only parts we had were used ones.
“Spray that old gasket with copper coat and use it one more time” was what we were told when I started in this “hobby” years ago.
The only stuff we had was JC Whitney and go to Hershey once a year. Them was the days!!!! Dan

I found out the carburetor on my car is a little newer than the car. I thought about finding a carburetor that matched the year of the car, but then I thought...maybe the reason the previous owner put a newer carburetor on the car was to make it run better.

Here is my question...did Ford make improvements to the carburetors over time to make...
Last post
Wow...thank you for all the good information. To answer the question...yes the car I have is a 1914 and the carburetor that was put on by the previous owner is a Holley Model-NH. It looks like it originally came with a brass carburetor back in 1914. According to what I am reading the car probably runs better with the newer Holley Model-NH...so I...

OP: Right now I have Motorcraft plugs set at .032. Would a smaller gap make the car easier to start? I would expect that a smaller gap, such as .025, would improve starting, assuming you have a stock system in good condition. A 12 volt automotive battery in a good state of charge should provide plenty of power to operate the ignition system. In...

In the past I have always used wheel bearing grease in the ball cap/ universal joint. Recently, at a farm supply store I saw some NGLI 00 grease, that is used in some farm gearing applications. This grease has a low viscosity. I figured that regular wheel bearing grease in the ball cap will be spun off the universal and stick to the sides of the...
Last post
If the ball is packed full of thick bearing grease, there is no space for the slung grease to go, so it remains inside the spinning cage of the universal joint, thereby providing never ending lubrication. Only if you partially fill the ball will there be space enough for the grease to be slung out of the cage to remain against the inside wall of...
