Early two piece timers

Hi all,
I’ve just read in the classifieds about the availability of covers for the two piece timers
How many of you still use this style from the real early models and have you modified them in any way? Are they reliable
and what advantages/ disadvantages are there.
I remember Warwick in Melbourne was experimenting with upgrades many years ago for...

Engine and transmission questions

Hello
I am currently in the process of overhauling the transmission of my model t.
have new drums and a new starter wreath and new gearshaft and many other parts. I also convert to slinger kit.
my real question is.
Do I really have to drum and balance the flywheel statically now? is that really necessary with such a low-revving engine?
if so how...
Last post
If you do nothing else, static balance the flywheel- if you have no access to a machine shop or a balancing service, do as John said- use two main shafts- one out each side. Rest the shafts on 2 knife blades made from scrap metal. Heavy side will roll down. Use modeling clay on light side to balance, then drill holes on heavy side until flywheel...

A long time Model T-er and I are going to attempt to re-magnetize my 1915 magneto without removing the engine by using a compass and three 12 volt batteries, ...or maybe the voltage from his welder. Has anyone done this before? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for? Thank you in advance for any advice you may be able to give us.

Should they be tightened all the way and then backed off until you can install the cotter pin or should they be backed off more than that?
Last post
Cotter pins are used to stop a tensioned nut from backing off. They are not used to keep a non tensioned nut from backing further off. I can think of one exception to this on a T. The fan arm to timing cover bolt is also stepped so it is tensioned up to the timing cover, the block casting acting as the nut. In this application, the cotter pin just...

All bushing tolerances for the Model T Ford transmission are .002 for a new job and .005 for a repair job.
Wasn't assembly at the factory the only new job? Aren't all transmission overhauls now repair jobs?
Last post
The real question is: 100 years later what should we be using for dimensions for a repair?
According to FordOwner and other sources tells us that using a bushing that has .005 or less play on it's worn pin is repair and used...play over .005 is a replacement item and done with new pins.
Now for practical use in a Ford mechanic's shop in 1918 and...

I can not get the micrometer on the tail shaft to get an accurate measurement. I am told that the end of the shaft is normally square but mine has a rounded off face. Not much but maybe an 1/8 rounded end. I can get the micrometer into the shaft be not far beyond the rounded off end.
Last post
That shaft can be pretty worn. dont expect it to be the same diameter along the whole surface where the 4th main has run. One way to get the measurement is to use a caliper on the 4th main, slip it onto the shaft with a feeler gauge to determine the difference.

I recently purchased a little ‘26 coupé. Nice car, but the previous owner made certain “updates”.
Most notably he changed the electrical system over to 12 volt. Now, since this car has no magneto, the coils work splendidly on 12 volts, but I really worry about the way that the Bendix crashes into the ring gear when I press the starter button....
Last post
As has been correctly identified the use of resistance in the 12V supply to a 6V starter isn't really going to achieve a great deal.
However there is a reasonably inexpensive and simple method to modify the 6V Model T (and Model A) starters to 12V operation - by altering the field coil configuration.
In both cars the four starter field coils are...

Last post
Larry, the two valve sizes ended in October 1920 when the Ford obsoleted the larger size valve stem. That one was 3-3/8 long x 15/32 diameter (just shy of 1/2 ). The remaining valve stem was exactly 3 long x 13/32 . Just FYI.

I would caution against sandblasting panels with a flat profile like early fenders. It is very easy to heat/warp flat panels with blasting. Take your time to strip them by other more gentle means. You may find that much of the filler will need to be replaced!

I just got an Aluminum Warford 3 speed in pieces. It came with two different rear locking thrust nuts, one is just a little bigger then the other. Both just drop in. The threads on the nuts are good, not so much in the case. Any non arm and leg ideas how to fix it? Except for one over sized hole for the cover/gear shift the case look ok, but have...

Finally found the rattling sound inside my 24. Wasn’t noticeable until I had the oil drained and was hand cranking in prep to check rod clearances. Wonder how long it was loose. Fortunately the threads inside the disc drum are fine. The Cotter pin must have been left out somewhere in its 97 years

I thought it might be Chris Hall in the photo. Chris is a well known collector and antique dealer. Don't know if it's for sale or not but it's typical of the great stuff he finds.

Cam bearings

So I have this dummy delima. On the 9-24 front cam bearing; I have pulled 3 cams and the ends of the bearing seems to be broken. As you roll the cam; the lobe will actually drop in and that is a bad deal. I find it hard to believe that all 3 cams I pulled are the same way. Am I missing something? Thank you IMG_20210625_084035855.jpg...
Last post
As John has posted, the front bearing sets the float of the cam shaft, any more than 4 to 5 thou the cam can knock. Another thing that must be a firm slide fit is the bearing into the block. I like using the late cams on rebuilds as they have a wider front lobe so I use a earlier bearing by keeping the alignment hole in consideration, turn each...

I was going through some of my old automotive books, and out of one of them, dropped a Illinois State Tax Stamp, for the above car, which was listed as a Model T Tudor. This would have been a 1919 car, going by the engine serial number dating records.
If someone has this car, and can send me a photocopy of the title (mutilated) I will happily...

Model T’s were often misidentified ‘sort of’ because of what someone thought they were this or that. I have a 24 Coupe that was misdated at inspection stations as a 25 because they look so much alike. I still have the inspectors receipts.
Other T’s from 17-22 open cars look alike except for some details.
And then there’s the Dr’s Coupe theory!...

So my big size 14 feet keep stepping on the starter switch when the engine is running resulting in horrible noises coming from the starter! Solution? drill a hole in a hockey puck and drop it over the button. Easy to remove for starting, appropriate black colour, and cheap to replace if lost or stolen! In Canada there is only one kind of hockey. It is taken for granted that when you say hockey its played on ice. If anyone says ice hockey we know they're from away. The plater should have it done next week. It is a bit special as it is for a McCord aftermarket radiator. Ultimately cheaper than I could buy one for that wouldn’t really fit anyway!

Thank you for the kind compliment Bob...
It was good seeing you there. Wish we could have gotten to Richmond sooner, and enjoyed more socializing. We got a ton of rain in Cincy, that didn't let up until 10:00. We held up on loading the car on the trailer, thinking that 90% precip in Richmond had signaled a non-starter.

A reverse pedal extension helps a lot to get a clean reverse! If your a big footed guy it’s almost a necessity to have one! And yes it does keep you from engaging the clutch and reverse at the same time. I wear size 13 and guys with bigger feet that that would have a tough time it seems to me.
As a Bigfoot I needed the reverse extender and I...

Bill,
Thanks for posting the information on the rules of the Montana 500. The event rules are very detailed and very fair to the participants. From what I can determine everything must be reasonably stock except the camshaft and the crankshaft to flywheel location.

Thanks for any help you can give me,

Question - Valve Stem Lubrication on Open Valve Engines

Not strictly Model T, but related - My 1912 Flanders engine has an open valvetrain. How much and how often do the folks with Model Ts with open valvetrains lube their valve stems? Do you use the same oil as what's in the sump, or something thicker, like 600W? Thanks! :)
Last post
Marvel Mystery oil in the gas tank will lube vale stems as well as/or a pint of engine oil in a full tank of gas.
