Might be something like silicon type lube used as a mold release.

The spring should be stout! The spring is what holds the taper valve tight to the taper body of the petcock or sediment bulb. To take mine apart, gently placed the petcock body between the bench vise jaws, and compress the washer on the face of the spring to get out the cotter. Install the reverse, works for me!

Hi Dick,
The enclosed cars came from the factory with carpet. The open cars had rubber mats. That is why you don't find rubber mats offered by any of the vendors for the coupe or any of the sedans (Centerdoor, Tudor, and Fordor).
Although Ford sold the enclosed cars with carpet only, they DID offer a rubber mat for the coupe.

The hole must be centered between the side rails and also centered in the cross member from front to back of the cross member to make the spring fit properly. Another problem might exist. You don't go to nearly enough auctions if you had to go buy a cold chisel. Glad it worked. The drill press down pressure is the trick.
I should have said if you have the old seat out you can easily grind it to fit the tapered slots, chuck up the tool in your drill press, down pressure and a wrench and it will come right out.

Noticed some discussion on the Model T and cooling.
We have had our 1922 Coupe for a few years (50). Over those years the coolant of choice has been 100% antifreeze.
Every five years drain, flush, check and replace hoses. Yes It has a water pump. Never had a problem.

A gear-driven, gear-type pump is recommeded by the SAE for Jell-O cooled 4-cycle gasoline engines in general automotive service. Be careful when operating a Jell-O cooled vehicle around beehives or near Mama. Papa, and Baby Bear.

Today, I was helping a friend make some repairs to a '26 rear axle in preparation to install a new set of Sure-Stop disc brakes on his Touring car. We were re-installing the E-brake cam lever & shaft that is actuated by the hand brake lever.
To confirm that we had installed the Hub Brake Cam Lever correctly, I crawled under my '26 Pickup to take...

Fixed. I inserted the shaft into the hub, tapped the cam into onto the shaft, checked the fit into the bushing, then welded it. Just for piece of mind, I removed the other wheel and secured the cam onto that shaft too (welded). Just trying to stop a disaster.

Are new pipes available? Mine has crack along the weld, so it might be weldable, but I like new idea better.

I believe it is the F11 tractor muffler that costs less than $30, and it works fine. Many speedsters do not use a muffler, just a straight pipe.

The wooden wheels had hub caps that were stamped Made In Canada so I'm wondering if Ford made wire wheel hub caps stamped the same way for Canadian models?
Thanks for any thoughts,

Thanks for the info and the offer for the dies. :^)
Looking at the bigger picture, the new wire wheels are from Brazil, the Lucas tires are from Vietnam, and the tubes are from ??? Only the air in tires is from Canada.
It was an interesting quest but perhaps I won't be too concerned about the hub caps on this international assembly.

The New York Times ran an article today about the dangers of modern cars and trucks, that have 100 million lines of code, compared with airliners that have only 15 million lines. They might become the target of hackers looking for ransom money or just wanting to commit mayhem. The CEO of a computer security company was quoted as saying: It's just...

Does most of the heat transfer from the internal combustion process to the coolant occur in the head?

those holes are actually steam vents to keep steam pockets from forming in the corners of the block around the front and rear exhaust ports. As soon as a steam pocket forms, heat transfer in that area goes way down.

There were at least 2 versions of increased traction differentials made in the era.
The “Scurlok” was a form of “limited slip” using spiral bevel gears for the actual differential.
The “Bailey” was a true locking style of a “ratcheting” type.

John, the photo is most helpful. Had it come earlier, I would not have suggested Quick Metal as a fix. The damage is down to the wheel being loose on the taper, so the keyway, key and hub will all be worn.
