So I'm installing an ANCO Timer and I want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. I have already installed a modern cam shaft seal and centered the cam shaft cover with a centering tool. So the first thing I did was slip the roller on the shaft. Then I placed the pin in the shaft. My question is the washer seems to have a space for the head of the...

Side Curtain Rods

I am looking for a pair of side curtain rods for a 26 roadster coupe. Where is a good place to start looking? Picture of my T attached. I know they are specific to model and year. I am assuming what ever I find may have to be adjusted to fit because I'm sure there are not part numbers on the rods. Any advise I should be aware of on my search?

If somebody else doesn't respond, I'd be willing to bet that Bob Bergstadt has a pair of them. Either PM him from the forum or contact him on Ebay, his Ebay ID is modelt2001. :)

Not all “potmetal” is bad. That’s actually a generic term. Back in the day it was a miracle metal. Diecast is another term, but that means just what you think. Items were cast in a metal die to very close tolerance. There are antique auto items I stay away from like the plaque. Most , but not all A-C speedometers, for one. Some late Stewart...

I've got a Ruckstell for my '14 and I understand there needs to be some machining done to get the pieces to all fit up to the '14 housing and/or spool. What needs done?
Last post
First for the million $ question; original or new one?
Where the pinion bearing housing bolts to the Ruckstell, is it flat or stepped around the outer edge? If stepped then your 14 parts should just bolt up. The right side axle housing should bolt up to the Ruckstell. Ford did not change to the open spool or bearing housing till around 1921 so...

Old-style permanent magnets slowly weaken over time. If they are handled roughly they will lose magnetism much more quickly. Vibration, heat cycling, etc will weaken magnets more quickly. All that said, Model T flywheel magnets will last a long time, in or out of service, if properly charged , handled, and installed. I have a gas engine magneto...

I have decided to equip my 1914 with a full set of LED lights (headlights, tail lights, turn signals). I see posts with the batteries under the back seat,...

I used a full-sized battery for mine. I mounted it in an aftermarket running board-mounted battery box from back in the day. Those were often used on TT's, since most of those came without electrical equipment. They turn up from time to time at swap meets and on ebay.

IF you're sure you need new wheels, go ahead. I had Stutzman make the new wheels for my 1915, and there is nobody better. But for my 1923 with demountables and steel felloes I bought the spokes and assembled the wheels myself with the Regan press. And yes, do go light on the paint where the spokes fit together.

I had to replace the fiber timing gear on my Rajo head engine. It is equipped with a distributor. I have to find TDC to re time it. I want to make sure I got it right.
BTW the timing gear was replaced with a metal one and the fiber one came with the engine and head and I knew it was going to fail at some point.

I always use this simple trick on my cars. I think Ted Ashman shared this originally. I put a small chisel mark ( Dremel cutoff would do the same) at top dead center. I also but a little match mark in the pulley ( Dan’s pulley , of course!). Makes it easy peasy to just reach down to find TDC at the 3 o’clock mark with your fingernail....

I am in drivers training with my T..From the shop to the house, just in low. My question is, has anyone tried driving just in high gear? Would you have to take off too fast initially? I would add only one thing to Bob's excellent description of driving. When starting on magneto you do need to advance the spark lever down a few notches. But since most T's start easiest on battery but run better on magneto (more voltage to the coils), you want to set the switch on BAT to start then switch over to MAG when the car is running....

I'm getting ready to paint my wood spoke wheels on my 1926 truck. I'd be interested to hear recommendations on a good primer and paint. I want to paint them black. I know some people sand and stain them - what are your thoughts on this?

David, I believe the additives used in bumper paints are not likely to be compatible with paint normally use to paint wooden wheels. A good quality household enamel over properly prepared and primed wooden spokes will give years of service without cracking and deterioration. You just need to use paints from the one system for best results.

There never was a felt under the cap during production. Felts have been added over the years but they are not original to the TT. If you do install or manage to install a felt under that short little cap, don't forget a washer for the bearing to rub on.

Hello all,
I want to keep the original Ford sick duck horn but repaired a Sparton AHOOGA horn that I wish to mount in addition; keeping both horns. Looking for ideas on where to mount and the brackets used. Pics please. A search showed a couple people mounted on the radiator rod.
Thanks,

I put my 24 on my lift today and changed/replaced the front spring shackles and bushings. Found the right perch was easy to turn and tightened the nut at the wishbone close to half a turn !

Random question. Was there any part of the Model T which was unchanged in design/material and therefore indistinguishably different through 1909 and 1927?
I assume no.
So, then that leads to my next question. What was the longest period of time that a part was manufactured unchanged and what part was it?

Identify Flywheel

Can anyone identify this flywheel for me. It appears to be a Model T flywheel, but it has the high ring of metal around the outside in place of the spacers/spools for the magnets. Was this ever issued from the factory? Was it an old time modification for something that did not run with magnets? Maybe used on a Ford Tractor or stationary motor?

Some clever soul did that to increase torque. It would be good in a truck, doodlebug, or stationary power unit.

Do it from on top.
Use a bar to wedge the spring leaf away from the lid so you can assemble it and get the screws in with the lid vertical.
I did it last week so I had a piece to take to get paint matched.

James, they are in series and connected together by the engine frame, look at the patent.
That makes the spark gaps have to be equal to equally share the spark.
The Ford Coil supplies about 9,000 AC Volts that is equally divided.

I checked Lang's and Snyder's web sites. They appear to have them. A call will tell you for sure. The Model A and Model T would be the same except for the name plate. If you get the Model A motor meter, make sure it either says jus Ford or says Boyce so it won't designate Model A.

At Chickasha I made several brass acquisitions for Hay Wagon to speedster project. These are pictures of the very brass T at Chickasha. That is a lot of brass. So how does one keep all that brass shiny? Does it tarnish? How do you get into the tight spaces to keep it shining? How often does re-polishing have to be done?

Personally, I do not like the look of polished brass. Just too cutesy and
contrived. No one polished their brass cars back in the day, and doing so
now is just another case of over-'restoration' , which to my thinking is both
historically inaccurate (for cars being used) and just trying too hard on the
part of current owners to make their cars...

holley-model-g-model-t-ford-45.jpg Hi All, Does anyone know if the pickup tube and venturi clip are available anywhere, or can somebody let me know the size of tube used. I picked up a really clean carb in very good condition and the parts above are not in the carb. Thanks in advance .

I think you are going to have to find a used tube. You will note that the bottom of the one shown, pickup end, is pinched partly shut. While you might be able to duplicate that with solder, getting the orifice and length the correct size might be iffy. Not to mention finding the correct size coupling nut and finding a flare tool that small and if...

Well, it's gotten to be that time when I need to get my '15 Touring reupholstered. Getting the kit is no problem and I'll probably use Classtique. The problem is finding a brass car-qualified auto-upholstery shop within driving range of my 30 mph Model T (I don't own a trailer or a pickup truck with which to tow it and would rather not deal with...

From 1970 to 1972 I did a ground up restoration on my 1926 coupe taking it from a rusted hulk to showroom condition in 2 years. I'm starting another link with it if anyone is interested, regarding Ford's record setting victory in the 24 hour contest held at the Michigan...

Do I have to remove the spindle arm in order to ream out the new spindle arm bushing that I pressed in. I have a machinist trying to work on reaming out the bushing and he's having trouble. Thanks for any help.

If your car has black centers on the hubcaps, and the paint has worn off in spots, an easy fix is a Sharpie marking pen. It's easy to go around the letters with one, and it blends right in. If you go onto a letter, it will polish right off.

Many men from my generation, who grew up in the 60’s building models still enjoy building the occasional plastic model kit. Unfortunately, there are very few Model T kits that were made in America and most modern plastic model kits are the unrealistic snap together kind. I guess today’s model kit manufacturing companies want to protect the...

There was absolutely no Model Airplane Glue in the shop. It wasn't because it wasn't allowed, it's because it doesn't work as nearly as well as MEK on styrene plastic. MEK works as a solvent and literally...

I have an old Allen HCCT. When I try to test a coil, I am only getting about 3 volts at 1.3 amps. Is this probably a symptom of weak magnets?
Last post
The magneto test as described in the Ford HCCT manual says to connect the car magneto to the HCCT test stand and run the engine at a moderate speed.
The Ammeter should register at least 0.8 Amps.
There is no criteria for a minimum voltage stated in the manual.
This test would be the same on all HCCTs with or without a voltmeter.

I have been rebuild some assemblies and most required the balance ring refitted to the drive gear and a new spring and pin in the balance ring. when refitting the gear, there are three different starts on the thread of the drive. Does it matter which start is selected? I can get the spring and pin in the balance ring somewhere near the Bendix...
Last post
Doesnt matter. Important that pin & spring ride on top of one of those threads. That pin keeps the gear from vibrating into engagement. If the counterweight comes off it must be replaced back on in the proper position for that pin alignment. If you miss that alignment the pin hole & inside counter bore can be redrilled.

X’ing rods?

Did Ford ever cut X oil groves in T rods? My thinking is the X gives the oil a path in —-but it also gives the oil a path out under pressure. And I’m thinking the surface area of the bearings is greatly diminished leading to a shortened rod life.
Last post
Dan, that rod doesn't seem to be a popular idea at that time, no mention of it in service Bulletins for 1926/7 or available as a spare part even into the 1930's parts books. Maybe a bit like the tin piston
