Valve Guide Chip ; Correction : Lifter Boss Chip
Replies: 7

First post
I have a 26-27 block that has a chip (not more than a quarter inch deep (as measured from the top of the guide) and not more than one third of the circumference of the top of the guide. Do I need to repair this, or will it affect anything if I just leave it 'as is'? I don't have a picture; next time that I go to my parts, I'll take one.
Last post
Are you referring to the valve guide or the lifter boss ?
Thanks to everyone that has given their ideas and opinions. Unfortunately, I had a 72 year old senior moment when posting originally and Steve caused me to catch it. I don't have a chipped valve guide; I have a chipped lifter boss, but some of you have answered my question because you...

'27 Tudor front seat. I have heard these called a seat cup or seat foot. The back of the seat rests on the carpet. How many different sizes were available. In my stash, I have 2 and 2 1/2 . Were there any made that measured 3 or 3 1/2 ? I am unable to find a source for new ones.

When I visit KD - there always seems to be some treasure that can be found as a direct or indirect result.
Researching The Early Model B led to a gentlemen in Arlington, Texas who worked for “ Doc Bloom “ between 1965 and 1967.
“ Rusty “ was tasked with working to make a Ford Early Model B Wood Body out of pieces out of an original wood body...

Alternate History Question 2: Modern Model T
Replies: 5
by

Hello again. The Ford Model T's design is almost an icon for vintage and veteran cars. When most people think of really old cars, they usually think of the Model T or a car similar to it. What if, though, the Model T was remade in the modern age? How would it look like? Would it be as widely used as it was back in the early 20th century? Thank you

The modern Model T was the VW Type 1 Beetle.

I was inspecting my spokes today and one wheel’s spokes appear to have possibly crossed the line into a safety issue. I have done the tap test multiple times before on all my spokes and they sound fine. No knocks or any other sounds when I’m driving. But I took a closer look at some discoloration and I was able to chip some of the wood away, near...
Last post
I expanded the very first picture and there appears to be a rusty line and a clear line around the hub. To me this implies the hub is moving with respect to the spokes. If the nuts are tight then is time for new spokes. I made a spoke press and have rebuilt several demountable wheels quite successfully. I wouldn’t even try wheels with wood Feloes

I'm rebuilding my 1915 CenterDoor engine. It currently has a distributer and slingers. It also has a Warford, High Compression head,

I know Distributers and Mags don't go together, but is there an advantage to having either magnets or slingers?
Your humble opinions are desired.

It was the same thread for the whole of the Model T production from my 1909 Touring thru to my friends 1927 touring 😊

The speedster wasn’t running good when I went to it a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the annual speedster run. There didn’t seem too much compression on a couple of cylinders. So I removed the head and I wasn’t too happy as there was lots crud in a couple of cylinders which settled under a couple of the intake valves. Then I realized that...

That job may even be easier. If the valve spring is removed the valve can be pushed up out of the way. A Dremel cut-off disc could be used to make a screwdriver slot in the remainder of the broken bolt. A sacrificial small screwdriver could be bent at right angles to hold the broken bolt and the tappet rotated to screw it out. That should mean...

Help identifying oddball demountable rim

Bmettli » Wed Oct 28, 2020 10:32 am
First post
Hi all,
I recently bought a bunch of rims for my car from craigslist, and I had this oddball rim included. It is marked HAYES, and here are the measurements:
Across (length): 24 1/4 inch
Width (outer): 3 1/4 in
Width (inner): 2 3/8 in
Note the clip on the lug as well. Any ideas? Thanks!
Last post
Mark is most likely on the mark. Because the valve stem hole on a Chev rim is close to the nearest lug to it, that lug has to be slotted to allow the valve stem to be lowered into the felloe, the lug also lowering over the wheel bolt at the same time.
On a Ford rim, the valve stem hole is further away from the nearest wheel bolt, enabling the...

Would it be better to start the Model T with the key (or switch if 1916 model year or earlier)? Or would it be better to start the car with the key/switch on magneto?

I suspect the reason for the battery terminal on the switch of the early cars is for setting the timing and checking that each coil vibrates in proper order, because you can turn on the battery and slowly crank over the engine and tell exactly where the spark is in relation to the piston position. It may or may not have been for running the car on...

Engine knock during Deceleration.

First post
I have an engine knock during light deceleration that only occurs when there is no load on the engine. When the engine is slowing down the car the knock goes away and is never there during acceleration.
I tried removing shims from the rod caps and although one cap seemed loose apparently it was not the culprit.
What else could it be? Crank?
Last post
I had an engine with similar symptoms.
Pulled the pan and things seemed tight.
Turned out it was the front main.
A blocked oil hole was the problem. (Low mileage rebuild .)
I seem to remember a remetalled cap and rebluing the crank was the solution.
Hope this helps.

I purchased my T not long ago and the gentleman stated that the motor was recently rebuilt. I’ve taken the head off and the cylinders walls look recently honed. Pistons are std T.
Do I basically need to strip it down to the block and measure everything to know for sure? How can I tell if new Babbitt was poured?

I'm trying to help a new T owner who recently purchased some sheet metal parts (surface rust but not rusted through -- but without any wood in them) for a touring. But the parts are clearly from at least two different cars. He has a 1924 high cowl front seat section and a 1917-1920s 5 piece rear seat tub. Those parts were not attached -- just laid...

Well you could ‘sort of’ fit the 5 piece earlier rear section on a 24 Touring front half but it wouldn’t be quite right. Believe I would try to find a 17-20 front half to go with the 17-20 back half. Or find 24 back half to go with the 24 front half.
One more thing to do is if you have the front half of a 24 Touring you could make a 24 cutoff...

I hope a U.S. dealer will soon carry the Blockey brand. From what I've seen so far, I think the tread design is not good looking. Perhaps if I was to see one I would change my mind. Next, on the tubes. I wonder if the valve stems are the same exact dimensions as the originals, and if they supply tubes that we can use our original authentic...

Many thanks in advance for your advice ☺️!

The coil fires, but does the plug fire? Do you have a coilbox with original style wood in it? If so, and the coil fires, and the plug fires in the open air but not in the engine, and since the trouble is with #1, what you probably have is a carbon track in the coil box wood. Wise move Robert. Just replace a section at the bottom of the rod with anew piece. Grind each end to a blunt point so the weld can penetrate, and file back into round. The job is even more satisfactory if you drill and pin the control arm and fit it first.

All-Purpose or Wheel Bearing Grease?

What types of grease do you all use for your wheel bearings? Seems like previous owner of my T used all-purpose for everything (including wheel bearings). Are there any notable benefits to using grease made specifically for wheel bearings?

Hey,...those pioneers used to grease those wagon wheel hubs with animal fat, and they made it all the way from Independence, Missouri to Oregon!!!

For a good many of us, the experience of driving a century-old car isn't about convenience or reliability. In fact, historical purists see frequently required maintenance and inconvenient breakdowns as part of the game. Other folks are just looking for some reliable fun. They're okay with putting demountable wheel rims...

Newbie from NC, in my late, late 50's. Been a vintage Honda Motorcycle guy for a few years so I'm moderately metrically mechanical. I'm about to be thrust into the caretaker's role of my Aunt's 26 (I think) Speedster. My uncle passed in '08 so the last time it ran was before then. I would like to know what I need to do to get her started again....

Hi All
I picked up a '13 block for my '13 Canadian touring project recently. When I took the valve covers off to inspect it I noticed that something appears to be missing inside. See if you can spot what's not present.
And has anyone else run across this missing step in the engine manufacture before.

I built up a speedster 4 valve rajo for a customer and the block didn’t have the two oil drain holes. The oil built up and would leak out at car shows much to the isners annoyance. So we bought a long drill, removed the inspection pan and drilled the two missing holes from the bottom.
They may not be in quite he correct position but the oil build...

Side curtain fasteners question

First post
I am now thinking about side curtains on the 23 runabout. I’m confused about how they are fastened. My assumption is that the fronts are secured to the windshield bracket and posts with flat hooks. Then the top of the fronts are held inside by three common sense twisty fasteners that are on each side of my front bows. There is also a common sense...
Last post
By the way, the bag that the vendors sell to store the side curtains when they aren't being used isn't correct either. Here is an older thread about the configuration of the current vendor roll versus an original Ford curtain roll:
Larry Smith sent me the dimensions of his original roll and I made a copy for myself using some vinyl top...

What is the remedy when the teeth on the steering quadrant are worn and the throttle slips down while driving? Leery about using a file form new teeth.

When I restored the 1909 Touring, the teeth on the quadrant eere very worn. Also it appeared to be a 1914 style column at 56” long. So I made the decision to cut it down to the correct 50” and replace the quadrant. There were no very difficult problems though installing the two brass rivets to hold the quadrant, outer column and inner section was...

I was asked offline about top boots for open cars. Using Google to search for old threads on the subject, I came up with these:

Here's a tip:
If you make your own top boot, use top material, not upholstery material.
Upholstery material stretches which doesn't make for a good boot.
Top material does not stretch. Factory boots were made from top material.

Need some help determining which battery I will need. I saw a video recently showing an Optima 8010-044 used in a '25 T.
Will this battery work for me?
Are there other/better options?
I currently have an Optima in my Bugeye and after a year in the body shop sitting dormant, it started on the first crank.
Once I get the car home, I figure this...

TRD great response and detailed info.
Appreciate all the input from everyone.
Knowing I'll have a million things to address and keep track of, getting a battery I don't necessarily have to worry about is piece of mind. At approximately the $20-30 a year for a battery is cheap insurance.

Hello all,
I am having such a silly problem at the moment. I am attempting to remove the front wheels in order to send them out for rebuilding, but the spindle washer is stuck on the passenger side. When I changed bearings on a previous car, they just came right off. The washer on this one seems to have been deformed such that it wiggles a bit...
Last post
Ended up having to cut it off with a Dremel and a really small disk. Somehow about half of the washer was pinched/flattened such that the washer tab was stuck hard into the groove and the washer wouldn't get over the threads. The threads closest to the spindle are somewhat damaged as well. Possible somebody tightened the castle nut way too much on...
