front tire bows in like it will collapse if I keep turning. Why?

First post
Why does the front tires, mostly the front left I believe, bow in like it is about to collapse when I turn to the left.
I tighten the wheel that kinda helped, but not much. The inner bearings were not very tight. Is this a bad bearing situation?
It is still in the restoration stage. It is not street worthy. I drove it on the lawn.
Thank you...
Last post
Another thing I failed to mention, if you have wood spoke wheels, the spokes should be tight in the felloes and in the hub. They might need to be re-spoked if they are loose.

That is what it sounds like to me.

In both of the books the late, great Bruce McCalley had a hand in writing, when talking about 1926-27 engine block color, he stated that the generally accepted pitch has been that the engines on the 1926 and 1927 cars were painted green. In our research at the Ford Archives, and after examining a good many original cars, we have yet to prove this...

I don’t know if this is a consideration, but when I bought a roller bearing fourth bearing to replace the original babbited one, the directions advised for me to cut off about 3/8” of the ball in order for it to mate with the cavity of the new bearing. I thought about it and decided I didn’t like that idea so I took out my drive plate and sent it...

Anybody knows some facts about the fairly uncommon one piece steel felloe/rim wheels used for a short time on Model T. I have on my 1919 Touring those with 30x3 in front and 30x 31/2 in rear. But I also have this type in 30x 31/2 for the front. Will be greatful for as much info as possible on these fairly uncommon model T wheels

I have nine coils. Some test OK using the hand held Model T Coil Winding Checker Coil Beeper and some do not. Should I discard the ones that do not test OK or should I make them available to someone? What use could someone make of them?
Last post
If you don't want them, at least give them to someone in the club who likes to salvage coils, or rebuild them. Many times it is just a loose connection or a bad condenser causing the problem Even the wood can be salvaged for a coil which is otherwise good but the wood is shot.
Anyway, don't toss them in the dump.

Hello again. I'm quite curious about the first Ford Model T that was ever made. I believe it was made in 1908. What I'd like to know is that who bought the very first Model T? Also, does anybody know what happened to that first T? Is it still around to this day or was it scrapped sometime before? Thank you for your time.

This post from 2014 has terrific info of real data researched on the first Model T's. Very good reading.
As for the first T's, only about 12 had the unique front crossmember bracket that is straight down as opposed to the later L curved bracket. A real one would have this special bracket only used very short time on the first dozen Model T's...

A lot of mods, and IF they were well done, it MIGHT be a good car.
But if they were all botch jobs, then you would have a LOT of work ahead of you, getting it drivable and also RELIABLE.
I think that might be why the price is so low. When I see mods on a car, especially older mods, I get VERY wary, and to...

Okay, so I'm fed up to here with the typical green drops under both my Ts from that cussed, period-correct looking radiator petcock dripping incessantly. The vendors CLAIM the original style (as well as the modern version) don't leak. I say ha! Prove it!
That said, has anyone bought one or the other in the last year, and indeed do they NOT leak?
Last post
R.V. & Larry...guess maybe I just have bad luck. But I generally don't back down from a challenge...I'll get it licked somehow! At least I got 90% of the oil drips from both cars remedied...they almost don't look like a T anymore on the pavement under the engine! And got the fuel drips stopped too. Yay!

If I was going to do this I would install a “swing check” (no springs) in parallel to the pump. Then I would probably have the best of both options!!

According to this diagram, if you tighten the body down at the firewall while shimming just in front of the door hinge column, it will tilt the door forward, closing the gap at the top. I have never done this so, even though it makes sense to me, try at your own risk. Jim Patrick

There is a December 30, 2015 post by Wayne Murray- Anacortes,Wa that shows a engine painted blue. My 1927 couple engine has that color and I think it is probably the original paint. I have seen many posts about engine color but have not seen any about blue . Any comments?

Here is my engine painted with Snyder’s high heat Ford Green engine enamel. I think it is as close as your going to get to the original engine green and I like the look of it. Also, whose to say that the dull green on the engine shown above did not look like the Snyder’s supplied Ford Green, 93 years ago when it was first applied. Jim Patrick....

My '24 doesn't have engine splash pans. Do they help much in cool weather, keeping cold air out of the cab... And possibly keeping heat in the engine compartment.... For good or bad?
Last post
I run my '10 and '14 without the pans in Florida and have never had a problem with overheating. I think the pans were intended to keep dirt and mud from unpaved roads out of things. That would be especially important for open valve engines. The early cars even had pans around the transmission and mine are sitting on the same shelf alongside the...

Seeking a sanity check on attaching long grain fabric to 26 Tudor wood roof frame. Don't want to do this twice.
1. Is it best to use a tack strip or just nail directly to frame and add hidem over it?

Just a personal ‘trick’ whether I am doing a closed car, or an open one on bows.
I only sink the tacks in halfway until I’m happy with the fit and draw...then once assured I don’t have a pucker...or need just a wee bit more tug by pulling a few tacks for the stretch needed...only then hammer home all the tacks!

Actually, Larry, the cost would be very nearly the same as the 1911 torpedo mats were, which was $425, and we'd need to sell at least 35 to get that price, so I doubt it's gonna happen, at least not by me.

Hey all, I’m just trying to clear up perhaps a silly and simple question I’ve never really gotten an answer to. I’ve seen people put Gland rings in the manifold first, but I also I see some put them in the block first, which way do you think is the correct way? Does it matter which one they go in first? Thanks for your thoughts.

Dan, the new manifolds vary a bit as well. The thickness of the one piece copper glands allows them to be tweaked to accommodate these differences too.

Pressure pack of copper seal, buy from Repco, auto barn or super cheap, or you can use brush on silver frost.
Make sure all your head bolt threads are cleaned out, scratch out the crap in the bottom of them and blow out with air. I also use never seize on the head bolt threads.

I would like to order some spare nuts and bolts here in Germany .
The vendors (e.g. at the 'bay') offer hardware with UNC and UNF.
Do I understand it right that for the Ford I need the UNC type (number of threads = 20 per inch) ?
Thanks in advance for any hint !
Last post
Jeorg, the part you show is not a typical example of nut/bolt sizes. 7/16 is the thread size but the brass hex on the grease fitting is smaller than the usual nut used on a 7/16 bolt. It is a thin walled pressing. As such, it should not be used as a locknut on your fan shaft.

As I was culling through some high firewalls I noticed the differences in these two. One has the late style clipped corner patent plate mounted low in the usual location while the other one has it mounted high, above the mixture rod and choke wire holes.
Other differences are the length of the oval hole below the low patent plate...

1919 Touring Drivable and 1920 Touring for Parts
by
MWalker » Sun Nov 15, 2020 1:13 pm
I'm mentioning this here in the Forum, because not everyone reads the Classifieds. I put this info in the Classifieds section. It's a link to a Craig's List ad in Fayetteville, AR, for a '19 Touring which is drivable and a '20 Touring which was hit in the right rear. They're not my cars; I thought someone here might be interested in them.

I agree with Jerry, I have found the same problems. BE SURE AND CHECK THE PITMAN ARM CONNECTION ( IT NEEDS TO BE CORRECT AND TIGHT) . You mention that it takes 1-1/2 inches of steering wheel movement before the wheels turn. Make sure you are just checking slop and not winding up and loading the steering system. The steering shaft will actually...

Extra Water Hole on Block Deck

Pictured below is a 1918 block I’m taking apart and am down to one stuck piston to complete the task. Now the reason for this post is to point your attention to the extra oblong water hole opposite the usual one, both in the center section of the deck. Has anyone come across this modification - I assume this is not factory.

Last post
My opinion on why the hole on the driver/left side of the engine should be blocked off is for proper cooling.
If you notice the exhaust valve arrangement, there are two exhaust valves side by side in the center. That will be the hottest point of the block and need the best cooling possible.
Now notice where the cooled water enters the block....

If you like to see old cars and some occasional T’s go to TCM (Turner Classic Movies) on your TV.
Lots of old movies in the 30’s and 40’s from time to time. It’s interesting to see T’s and A’s in use probably before they restored being used in the old gangster shows.

The coeffecient of friction of bare steel on leather vs powder coat and leather is virtually the same.
