Engine block coolant cavity vinegar soak

After giving my bare1920 engine block coolant cavity a vinegar soak for a week & wash I took it to have it bored for new .030 over aluminum pistons. I set the 1925 block on the bench for it's turn with the vinegar treatment, chunks of crud started to float to the top within a few minutes. As with the last block the soft (core) plugs started to...

Hello all, I doubt soaking my engine blocks will create a problem, I explored having the blocks oven baked but felt that it may make more problems with cracking which is what modern engine builders do with newer engine blocks. When I soaked the first block it did not remove rust to the point of being shinny new looking metal, but it did do what I...

I just installed a NOS Tiger Timer. It says on the box, to keep well oiled. My question is, what weight oil should I use?
Last post
I use the same oil in my Ruckstell (75w90) in my oil can. A couple drops on either side of the roller and a smear of dielectric grease on the contact faces. For whatever reason, I’ve never had any luck with Vaseline or straight just dripping oil into the hole on the timer (Tiger or Ford roller timer).

Anyone ever vulcanize an inner tube with gas

Mark Osterman » Tue Aug 04, 2020 5:29 pm
First post
I have seen original vulcanizing clamps for years but have never actually used one. There were evidently different heat sources including prepared flammable discs and also a pan to receive a little gasoline. Are there any vintage illustrated instructions? It seems that every clamp I’ve seen is missing a little metal pan for holding the gas and...
Last post
Vulcanising may well be a practice no longer compatible with modern tubes. Different rubber compounds/substitutes require different approaches. Most repairs made today use stick-on patches, and this includes stick-on replacement valve stems. You would need to ascertain that both the patches and the tube are compatible with vulcanising.

Oil Cap (Breather)

by
Original Smith » Tue Aug 04, 2020 2:47 pm
First post
I straightened an original Ford breather cap yesterday, and couldn't get it to fit well. Upon looking inside the hole, the casting was quite rough. Initially I used a half round file to knock down the high spots, but it wasn't satisfactory. Ultimately I used a brake cylinder hone with good results. I've never encountered a problem like this before.
Last post
Larry: I've had straightened caps fit too tight too. The cylindrical piece of the cap needs to be loose in the tabs that attach it to the fluted cap top so the split sleeve can compress slightly when you insert it. If those tabs are crimped down tight the cap may be difficult to insert and may actually be loose b/c the sleeve cannot spring back...

1926 Model T sediment bowl
Replies: 2
by
jimuris » Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:11 pm
First post
Quick question, on the 26 sediment bowl the valve should face down to get the flow of fuel. There is a little hole inside on the shaft and that should face down correct.
Last post
The valve handle should point down, however, it is possible to install the handle 180 degrees and have the handle point up when on. So if you get no fuel with the handle pointing down, try pointing up. If neither will allow fuel to flow, you have a blockage elsewhere in the fuel system.

Alex,
It seems like E&J was one of Ford's favorite lamp suppliers in the U.S. and location probably had a lot to do with it.
I would imagine that Ford would use whatever lamps were available, in a pinch, to ship the cars.
The well established E&J plant was located only 3 miles away from the Picquette Avenue Ford plant.

My 21 Touring seems to be pulling to the left. I intend to check the toe end this weekend and have read previous posts about it. Seems that folks have different ideas about the cause of pulling to one side. Don’t think the axle is bent but would out of adjustment toe end cause it?
Last post
For pulling to the left, I would check to see that the left wheel bearing is not too tight and dragging. I just had a wheel bearing get real hot on a car that I bought recently. Turned out the previous owner had installed the spindles on the wrong side and the left bearing had tightened up so tight that the inner race was spinning in the hub.

Installing running board support rods

Do you bow the support rod to install them?

Bob, I try to fit them as best I can, and note how much more I need to be able to get them into place. Then I use a die to add that much thread to one end. This enables that end to go further through the eye and lets me fit the other end. Purists might not appreciate the extra bit of thread.

A friend of mine is hauling a '23 Coupe from Texas to Michigan. He'll be using a open car hauler. His question is whether it would be easier on the car to haul it facing forward or backwards on the trailer? It has a sunshade on the front that doesn't look too substantial for 70-75 mph winds. I also wonder about the fenders flapping. Any...

In 2001, I hauled my ‘26 coupe on a U-Haul open trailer from York, Maine to Bartow, Florida. I winched it on with an electric winch with the front facing forward and tied down the wheels with the webbed wheel tie downs as well as cable come along on each axle for redundancy. Not too tight as a come-along can damage the axles. I removed the hood...

I have run one like it. This style does line up with the Ford hot air pipe. The valve at the bowl is an enriching needle for starting or as needed for richer mixture. As far as performance, my OP is they mirror the Strombergs but not as common.

Can anyone recommend a battery charger that will last? I had one for 30 years, it finally died. The last two I bought didn’t even last a full year.
Last post
Look for one of the new ones that has an anti-sulfation or Recondition feature.
Repeated heavy discharges and recharges will kill a battery that is not made for them, very quickly.
Take a look at the CTEK brand. Made in Sweden, and has excellent reviews.
I bought a CTEK one for my motorcycle batteries, and now I use it instead of my regular...

What is the best technique to flush the block while in the car. I want to try to make sure that there is not some junk in the block that can cause over heating before I put a good radiator back on. Dick C.

George I have used as well as others a 1/4 drill to clean up T blocks for years with no issue. In fact it’s works fine. Unless the numerous blocks I’ve had were misdrilled from the factory a 1/4” drill works fine for me. To each their own.

I found an old post that said they were painted to a similar color as mid-late 20's chevy which was a gray-green...im almost thinking perhaps even machine grey (gray with a tint of...

From the MotorCities National Heritage Area FB page today:
On July 27, 1917, Ford Motor Company introduced its first truck, the Model TT.
At the time, most trucks were modified cars. Henry Ford realized he could profit from pickup trucks, so he took his Model T and lengthened the chassis, stiffened the suspension and changed the gear ratios....
Last post
The vehicle in which the girls are loaded does not appear to have the heavier rear wheels of a TT. To my eyes it looks like a car chassis, with an extension, perhaps to accommodate an accessory transmission, and this allows for an extended body to boot. I was under the impression that the first TT's were 1918 models.

I've been helping a friend revive a 1913 roadster, which he had just inherited from his grandfather. After a couple weekends we successfully got the car started and safe to drive. Last post
If it starts well cold then it's probably not a manifold leak (which would give a lean mix). I suspect that the needle valve in the carb is leaking a little or the float is set too high causing a rich mixture, or the mixture adjustment is too far open.

As I said, I purchased material from Classtique to match my top. It came in three pieces with the end pieces cut on the bias. I agree that you could likely do it in one piece if it was all cut on the bias.
What I did was glue the material to the inside of the curve and by using heat, clamps and...

On the old pre 2019 forum, among the old timers and respected experts, the consensus was that the only way to repair loose spokes was to make yourself a spoke press and re-spoke the wheel. The wheel supports the weight of the car and loose spokes are amazingly dangerous, especially the lateral forces that occur when cornering. What you want to do...
