Yes, it is Turlock, California. The G. W. Hume Co. was a huge canning operation located on Hwy.99 in town. I worked there when I was in high school during the apricot, peaches and tomato seasons in the canning departments doing maintenance on the lines. It got me out of school part time all the way into November, so that alone made it worthwhile....

So I just got my first T a couple days ago (very excited!), and I’ve been tinkering with her ever since. I sent in $40 to MTFCA for my membership, and I sent out an email to join my local club. Anyways, I took the battery out to trickle charge it, and when I went to put it back in I realized the previous owners had it set up for positive ground...

The grease cup should be at the top of the u joint! Someone has turned the cover upside down to make the grease cup more accessable, but if it interferes with the brake shaft, it is in the wrong place. Usually a person with a good wrist can reach the cup from underneath, but it is very easy to reach if you take out the floorboards.

Years ago the wood in my 1924 touring was replaced, now during a second restoration I am trying to understand if the rear center belt rail piece is supposed to curve inward towards the center of the body. Problem solved! I removed the center belt rail and turned it around front to back and reinstalled. Works perfectly, now I believe it to have been installed incorrectly years ago. Thanks everyone and the MTFCA Forum

While you're at it, take an old ring gear and bolt it down with the teeth up.
I cut a hole in my bench top but you can also just bolt it over the edge of your bench.
Handy as a pocket in a shirt for holding the assembly, removing ring bolts etc, tightening them etc etc.

This double windshield setup was on the speedster when I bought it, so I am not certain what was used to make the passenger side. I figure its probably a converted windwing, more for looks than function, because it doesn't provide a whole lot of wind deflection for the passenger.

Oil pressure system question
by
Catbird » Mon Jul 27, 2020 7:21 am
Just purchased a 1927 Speedster with an oil pressure system. I have a few Model Ts, but my first with this system.
When I open the upper petcock a quantity of oil pours out. I notice that the oil filter in my car is higher than the petcock.
Is there any difference in checking oil level than a T that does not have a pressurized system?...

It begins. I have it in the 20 ton arbor press with some force on it. I've read the guides. I am not in that big of a hurry. Anything I can/should do to facilitate the gear removal? Heat it? I am not likely to reuse these axles as the key ways are worn out.

You know that if you teach a man to fish then give him a 20 ton arbor press he will spend 2 days smushing random things before getting down to business.
Similarly, if you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for a day. If you set that man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.

Get some glass fiber reinforced packing tape. It doesn't stretch. Carefully apply the tape on the flat part of the inside perimiter of the steel felloe next to the spokes. I ran an OF on my 23 runabout for a year and the only problem I had was the counterweighted needle that rides on the top of the brass float would get stuck on occasion and caused the fuel to dump on occasion. The top of the brass float had some dings in it. Couldn’t find a better float and I installed a U&J ... been that way ever since.

Didn’t no that about the magnet bolts and whether to wire them or not. I had to think twice about it after seeing this post. The last T I restored was my 21 Touring. I found a correct engine for that year at Chickasha and rebuilt it. It had the magneto bolt wires on and I rewired them after the transmission rebuild.

Thank you, Keith, I appreciate the reply! I kinda thought the shield had to attach to the floorboard as there is no where else it could possibly go, since the four screw holes are at the bottom. Makes sense now that I see what it's supposed to look like!

In actuality there’s 2 styles of this bracket in the last 2 years of T production. The rarest only fits the 4 door and chassis. The other style fits all the other body styles of 26-27. Just a tidbit I’ve learned from this Forum

If the engine is hard to turn over in neutral, I would suspect a problem with the clutch. If you put the parking lever in the neutral position, and push the car it should roll with some effort but the engine not turn. Likewise when you turn the crank, the engine should turn but the car would not roll.
The other possible and more likely cause...

What may discharge your magnets is if DC current from the battery is allowed to flow into the field coil. Whether the engine is running or not. This can be caused by a wiring fault, improperly connected wiring, poorly insulated wire harness ends touching each other on the ignition switch, or something as simple as removing the ignition switch back...

This question comes up fairly often. Beyond the general suggestions guys have already given, the best thing I can say is to drive your car for a while and let it tell you where it's happy. Art & myself love impromptu tours. Today he said let's go to Peru (Ohio that is!) So off he, myself and Jim went, after we met at the township hall near my house. Great day, great touring all over the middle of nowhere, and a neat stop at a new coffee shop/antique shop in this tiny little place out in the boondocks. Called Pioneer Spring...

As I was looking for a tap to do this at my usual dealer and couldn't find it . The 14/24 tap or the 1/4-24 tap was unknow.
Where can I find this? (I am living in Belgium)

Hi, John again. You may have noticed my dumb questions in the past. Here's another. I recall watching a YouTube video claiming that the model t engine can be in TERRIBLE condition and still run. I already addressed the question on speed vs the engine, now I'd like to know what kind of major problems a T can have and still run. A modern car will...

Transmission bands and synthetic oil

I know I'm stirring the hornets nest, but I have a legitimate oil question.
Lately I'm finding synthetic oil is as affordable and sometimes cheaper than conventional oil. So in my recent oil change I used 5w30 synthetic (4 QTs for only $8).
I seem to recall a passing comment that synthetic can cause transmission bands to not catch. Is there...
Last post
Just my opinion... Starting out on a drive it seems like you have no problem with your bands applying as you adjusted... As the engine warms up, metal will expand a bit possibly causing the effect of loosening up your band contact on the drum...????

Pictured are 2 drive shafts exactly aligned at the pinion gear end. One is noticeably longer than the other. Which one is right for a 1925 motor with a 1926-27 differential? The longer one came off of my Touring parts salad car of unknown history when I first took it a part and had all kinds of bizarre hacks on it to make it work. The second one...

Bingo the U-joint did not fit on the end of the longer shaft from an unknown source at all. It fit perfectly on the shorter one from a known source.
Ignacio, The shorter trusted one looks more correct. Check your U joint on the shafts to see if the U joint pin hole matches up. I think the longer shaft will stick out into the joint area of the...

Has anyone here either completed, or know someone who has completed, a coast to coast journey across America in a Model T? Using US Route 50 for example. Any articles or writings about such a trip out there?

Dave and Keith are right on target with their suggestion of short 200 to 400 mile trips to work the bugs out. Fortunately you live in an area with lots of secondary and tertiary roads. When I read other's questions, I tend to ask myself, What would I do if this were mine?
In this case, if the condition of the rear end was unknown and I planned on driving it, it would get torn down to check the bearnings and thrust washers. With this approach, the condition of the current lubricant becomes moot.

Last post
If at all possible don’t throw them away. What’s welded on can be taken off easy enough and they can be cleaned up OK. Lots of old parts have been saved and cleaned up. I try to save what can repaired and used again. If the parts are to rusted up and it’s just a part of something they are to far gone.
