I'm in the process of redoing my springs on my 14 touring, do you spray rust killing primer on before applying the Slip coat? Have a lot of info saved from the forum but didn't see the answer to my question. Let me know what is correct. I wire brushed/sanded to bare metal.
Thank in advance
Jerry

I agree with Mark. I did the front and rear springs on my 1913 this past winter. I wire brushed mine, wiped them off and painted with Slip-Plate. No paint or primer as per instructions from a respected old time mechanic in my area. I am very satisfied with the results.

I just acquired this brass Carbide Generator. It looks as though someone took it all apart to do a restoration on it. All the brass is straight. I've never seen one of these apart before. Pictured is a Schrader 888 tire valve in a round felloe wheel. As you can see from the photos, there is ample room for the rim nut. The difference between the 888 and the 777 is 1/4 .

DSCN0003_03.JPG I have seen many different ways to fix rust holes, but this is a first. Shove a piece of tin inside the body behind the holes and hold it in place with screws and nuts and then wood screws thru the tin into the wood sill. DSCN0002_02.JPG DSCN0005_03.JPG

Seeing that they used slotted screws, the repair is probably pretty old and therefore may have been a practical rather than aesthetic.
If so, it's a decent repair, especially for someone who could only afford a used Model T as their car.

I think it's an original too, but the 1915's and 16's usually have deep scratches where the body rubbed on the plate. I believe Ford used large round headed brads for these, at least that is what I have on my mid '13 roadster. My early '13 touring has the big plate, February.

I have two 90's Cadillac Sedan DeVilles. They were built to run on Premium Unleaded and they DO NOT like 87 or 89 octane ethanol. It doesn't seem to bother the 90 as much as it does the 93 but both of them will spit and puke and if there was a modern screen on the dash I think it would say, If you can't afford to feed me premium fuel you shouldn't...

Weight of fully assembled flywheel?

What is the typical weight of a flywheel c/w ring gear, magnets and hardware?
We took about 10 lb out of this one:

High Chris, I didn't remember if you used coils or the D word. Many speedster folks lose the magnets but must admit they have a real charm when tuned right. Those Montana 500 folks prove T coils are up for the task.
I'm with you in hoping we can get together again over Labor Day weekend. Quality time at home is great and safe and all that but...

The 300 cubic inch racer to Chebby music last summer. Click on the link to see the video on Dropbox. If you watch it, just imagine a motor almost the size of a Chebby small block in a T chassis....

Why would a 76 year old half crippled nut buy a 24 roadster in a hundred parts. I haven't even finished the 27 coupe I am working on. The sheet metal is in decent condition but the wood needs replaced. Only thing I see it needs is the lower windshield frame. DSCN0004_04.JPG DSCN0004_04.JPG DSCN0004_04.JPG

Jim, you have just followed a primary rule In workshop theory. You had way too much space which needed filling!

When sorting T parts my eye caught the variations in the Timing Cover Plate design (our Ts are Canadian, but I guess they copied the US versions closely). I have 2 pre-generator plates and 5 generator plates each different in terms of webs, heights of oil filler, baffles etc. There may be more variations but this is what I got from a pile of 8...

It might be a good idea to think about what the tips of those screws would do to the rim of a cam gear over time.

Have any of you good folks out there ever attempted to or better yet, had a positive outcome in replacing the rear spring U-bolts under a closed car, such as a Centerdoor without lifting the body ??????

Under my touring it was a piece of cake. I am surprised a closed car is that hard. Now I need to do it under my speedster and I might need to disconnect the body. Wish you luck.

band spring selection

I am going to use NOS Scandinavian bands. Langs has regular springs which they say are too short for most t's. They have more expensive longer -apparently stronger- springs for Kevlar and recommend them for all other bands. I have detachable bands if that matters.
Snyders has regular inexpensive springs that are longer.
Anyone have any...
Last post
The longer the spring the less wriggle room you have when fitting the hogshead. On our RHD cars, reverse and the brake have external adjusters, so the gap for those spring/band ears is fixed. I have had to resort to wiring the springs to compress them a bit to be able to drop the cover down over the band ears. Your experience may vary.
As long as...

Edison 14 spark plugs recommended gap?

NealW » Fri Apr 03, 2020 3:24 pm
First post
I'm getting ready to clean up the Edison 14 spark plugs that were in my 15 runabout before I removed them before the restoration. Two of them measured about .030 gap, with the other new more because the electrodes were corroded a bit. Is .030 gap correct for the Edison 14 plugs, and if not, any suggestions for what I should use after I get them...
Last post
With a few rare exceptions (like sheltered ring gaps), spark plug gap is a factor for the ignition system, the power (voltage versus rpm and other factors) and coil capabilities etc. Spark plug gap shouldn't vary more than about one thousandth from one brand and/or version to another (and that one thousandth variance would be due to the hotness of...

It seems to require a special head gasket, maybe for bigger valves. Does anyone know of a source for these gaskets?
As always, thanks!
R/ Roger.
Last post
AFAIK they worked with a stock gasket. Any indication that the head has been modified around the valve area? If so, you can modify a copper sandwich gasket by opening up the flanged sheet gently, removing the filler material and then forming the flange back with a tiny hammer. This is much easier on older gaskets where the interior is asbestos or...

Out here in Montana where the winters are long and cold, the summers are short and hot and spring and fall are a combination of both not only on a day to day basis but an hour by hour basis a lot of the time, somebody years ago decided to make a cab for his tractor from a TT. Did a nice job on it. I think the tractor is a McCormick Deering 15-30...

I sold that Model A at an auction in Havre about ten of so years ago.
The guy that has all that stuff on eBay people think is so over priced stepped up at about $15000 to outbid the guy that was going to strip it down to get the 31 sport coupe body.
It is, I think, still in his collection.
He did some research, found who built it, etc,...

Folks - although the museum is closed I encourage you to continue to shop the store. This is the perfect time to get that book you’ve wanted to read or add to your collection. Don’t forget the hats and shirts too. With the museum closed to visitors now is the time, if you can, to help support it.

Funny how “updated retrofit” solutions have come and gone, the solutions having become even more obsolete than the Model Ts they were applied to. I first became aware of the bonded band lining idea in the late 60s. At that time, one supposedly “easy” application was to utilize the bands from the 1950-52 Buick “Dyna-Flow” transmission. Nowadays,...

Hi, all getting ready to mount the spare tire carrier pictured lying upside down on the floor.
What size bolts do the 4 holes on the rear crossmember mount with?
What size bolts do the 4 holes on the top of the frame take?
The nut is missing from the bottom keeper bolt. What size/thread is that? Is it supposed to be a wing nut or something...
Last post
And the nut size for the stud bolt is...the exact same as a demountable lug nut and probably should be a demountable lug nut!

You don't have to physically machine the flywheel to remove weight. if you're going with a distributor then you can remove the magnets and substitute paddles to keep the oil...
