They have larger in-line filters than the ones you pictured. They are for smaller engines. As for those in tank screens: you can't get 'em out easily. Pass on that as far as I'm concerned.

Don’t know if the pre-electrics has a hotter spark but most have 10% more horsepower with a low head. Coupled with over 100 lbs lighter with no electrics, they are peppier. My ‘14 with a double stack field coil produces over 30 volts on the Magnetometer at about 15 MPH.

I am adjusting the pinion gear lash. I'm trying to choose between a thrust plate shim and ring gear shim. It seems to me the ring gear shim will only change the pinion gear lash. What makes my head hurt is trying to figure out what the thrust plate shim will change. Will it change the axle to axle clearance? The required thickness of the right...

Arthur, there are some who would say .020 backlash is too much. If the pinion is engaged for the full length of the teeth, and your prussian blue indicates full engagement on the teeth, you have it right. That is preferable to having less backlash but only part engagement at the gear faces. Well done.

Bob, any gunshop will have brass cleaner for you, it is used to clean spent (fired) cartridge cases before reloading, the main ingredient is phosforic acid, you just dunk the brass in it for a few minutes and it comes out bright and clean, it does not attack solder so should be quite safe for carb floats, be sure to rinse in warm water after.

I think this is about 1915/16ish machined with Jones gear. If worth trying to fix I have an idea, but looking for input. The only crack I can see is in the bearing cup which is not seated and cocked a bit. I think most of the dented part is more in the threaded end.

I bought this 30 x 3 1/2 clincher rim at Hershey a few years ago. It’s in perfect condition, no worn lugs or sharp edges, but it didn’t fit my wheels. Frustrating as Hell. The lugs are marked M H. Any ideas?

I agree it's not a Chebby rim. I don't think it's Ford either. Ford wheels were made by Firestone, Hayes, Kelsey, Pruden, and Ford. I've never read of any that would be marked MM. Perhaps aftermarket, or some other small car.

A model T person stated on FB that I should have a piece of rubber between my two windshields. I do not think I have ever seen this on anyone's car, so I am wondering what it is. Does this rest on the lower windshield so wind blown dust and rain do not slip between the windshield halves? Anyone have a photo?

My late Oct 11 built Touring came with a steering shaft that is 52 inches long from the bottom of the pitman arm threads to the bottom of the top flange. It seems too short making the pitman arm interfere with the engine pan. What length steering shaft should I have? Thanks, Art

In reading the Ruckstell book I find that the drive shaft assembly is included and refers only to stock Ford parts and procedures. Is there any reason not to use an already rebuilt DS that includes the FP pinion bearing? Will that require any special...

The original thrust bearing used in Ruckstells was a form of micarta. I don't know why Glenn refused to make his like Ruckstell did. I have always had to make up mine special. I don't have problems either. Ruckstell made over 200,000 units, so I guess they were ok!

Agreed on the physics. The pedal hookup arm on the cross shaft does give you a leverage boost as compared to a straight pull cable like the original A-C, for example, but having the force on the self-energizing side halved at the brake probably isn’t great. I’m working hard to save every last little usable bits off of my ‘25 parts chassis before I haul the rest to the metal recycler and came across these little clamps.

John...I removed the “gizmos” and started cleaning them up.
One of them looks almost new after some time with the wire wheel. The other one fought me more coming off and I broke the bolt. So you’ll have to find another square headed shoulder bolt to match.
I’m gonna try to extract the broken bolt and finish cleaning up the second one.

I have a ford model t touring 1920. I have 6v electric headlights . I purchased the headlight retaining wire for the headlights as mine were missing but cannot figure out how they install. Today, while getting ready to mount a new 21 tire on a previously powder coated wheel, I found a separated weld on a spoke that I had missed before sending them to be powder coated. The weld is on the end of a long spoke going from the rim to the hub, and is on the hub end, right next to the hub cap hole. I know that if I have it re-welded, the...

Terry, if it is possible, tap the spoke aside when you drill the hole. That way you will get a clean hole which will give you a stronger weld.
Two points to mention. I tap the spokes with the wooden handle of a hammer to check if any spokes are unsound before doing any other work. The duds will not ring like sound ones.

I put new bronze thrusts in the rear axle. Amazingly they fit with zero clearance with out having to thin the right washer. I put it together with a gasket and ended up with .012 clearance instead of the .005 expected per the book. I took it apart to check and it was the same ,no clearance with no gasket.

That's because the fiberglass bodies being sold to them are listed as either 1923 (bucket T) or 1927 (roadster) Model T's. Some fiberglass ones are actually a bit longer than original for more leg room. Not many are steel bodied. So if you see one for sale see if they say steel or fibergalss

I bought a fuel shut off valve that mounts to the carb from Eckler's so I don't have to crawl under my 1915 touring to turn the gas off. The problem I'm having is the valve is getting harder and harder to turn. I now have to use pliers to shut the valve. Is anybody else having this problem or do I have a defective valve? Rather than use solder to build up the thrust face, I have used soldering techniques to add whitemetal. This can be a permanent fix, provided the thrust face on the crankshaft is not undercut with wear. Either way, if the added material is worked back so the cap is a neat fit, any such wear will give some running clearance.

What is the deal with this wrench? It looks like a 1911 Model T Toolkit hub wrench. However, the small opening is a hexagon (8-sided), instead of the normal 6-side. Were some of them made this way or is it for something else?

The neck of my radiator drips anti-freeze and this tarnishes the heck out of my brass radiator. Of course, I need to get that fixed, but in the meanwhile, is there a coolant (besides distilled water) that does not tarnish brass?

If you don't have cutting oil, you can use water pump lubricant aka anti-rust which is also water soluble oil.
The drawback is that it can effect rubber hoses over time.
Water pump lubricant is getting harder to find these days at the auto parts store but NAPA does carry it:

More specifically I believe the seat frame is for a ‘30 - ‘31 Tudor.
The earlier Tudor frames like ‘28’s had some cast or forged pieces. Not sure exactly when they switched to stamping.

Robert, effectively the 26-7 T's are different cars than the rest of the 20's T's. As Wayne suggests, you could probably make an earlier top fit. With same amount of work, you might even get a top off a Chev to fit, but if you have to do that much work, why not spend the same time on the correct top.

One of my Model T good friends, Delbert Bultman, passed away yesterday Feb. 9. at 91. He owned and drove the1926 Model T roadster he bought in 1944 for 76years. He was still driving it last fall. He still lived on the farm he was born on. RIP Good friend, Bob.

TT rear end gearing

Hi All,
My understanding is that the TTs came with either high speed or low speed rear end gears.
My questions are:
1) My truck is not in running condition yet. How can I tell which gearing it has by looking at the gearing?
2) Did Ford actually make both high speed and low speed rear end gearing in the 1920s? or is the high speed gears a modern...

Jason, set the lever all the way forward. This is the high gear position. Very unlikely that your truck is stuck in low.

I have a older gps unit but I don't know how to mount it in the T for a speedometer.Can't keep em on the windshield of a modern,so I don't want to chase it all over the floor board of my T

Removing sediment bulb from gas tank

I have been trying to remove the sediment bulb from the gas tank on my 24 coupe. The shutoff was frozen and I could not get it to loosen. Tapping it with a hammer broke the handle, of course. I used Kroil and Liquid Wrench and heat. The gas tank has been empty for 55 years, so no danger in applying heat. Nothing worked.

I have what i believe are original fenders and running boards and repro aprons for my 11 Touring. One rear fender has a piece of painted over rubber attached with a screw on the front body side . You all have given me some great suggestions. I am going to try the laying the fender on its side and push the skirt in to reduce the width at the front. That is where the problem seems to be. These fenders were in storage for years and transported a few times so the could have gotten spread out. Thank you for all the ideas. Art

Is there currently produced a STANDARD 30 x 3 1/2 inch clincher tire. All the tires that are currently available as far as I am aware of are the 30 x 3 1/2 inch OVERSIZE tires. These are in actuality 31 x 4 inch. Of course both size tires fit the 23 inch clincher rim.

I'm rebuilding the Ruckstell on my 1924 Tudor at the moment.
I have a new 39T/13T crownwheel and pinion that I picked up a few years ago off a guy who was getting out of the hobby.
The crownwheel has a copper colour to it. Has anyone come across this before? The item is magnetic.

My 1925 Fordoor has an engine miss. So far I have installed new carb, installed new buzz coils, installed new timer, checked compression, checked for air leaks at intake, changed spark plugs but still have a miss. Compression is 48-50 psi. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 1909 touring body made by Ray Wells. It has never been on a frame. The rear doors stick. I assume I can place pads under a couple of the body brackets where they connect to the frame brackets and that will widen the door openings. Is that the way this problem is handled?

Cracks between intake and exhaust

I have found cracks between the intake and exhaust valves in two places on my engine. The valve seats are not cracked, just the block. Engine seemed to run fine before teardown to replace the Babbitt in number one rod. Is this something to be concerned about?

FWIW I have the same cracks in my '12 block. They have been there about 3 or 4 years ago and so far have not changed or affected performance. I have the hard seats like Mike. It'd be on the list of things to fix during the next major O/H
