Piston pins?

Dan Hatch » Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:07 pm
Customer brought me an engine to do. He supplied the pistons, HC .020 over.
Got to installing the rods and found this.

Have not seen this in years! Now I don’t know the age of these pistons, but box looks new. Are we going back on time?
Just giving everyone a heads up. Dan

Was an original 1912 chassis glossy or other?

Is there information available that indicated if the original chassis, (frame, front and rear ends) in 1912 were gloss black or less glossy?
I have heard that the T frames were dipped. Was that the case from the first T's?
Last post
Keith, I think I can make out a box pinstripping on the rear seat bottom. It's looks faint but there? It does appear to have a break where the lower rear seat hinge is though? Pretty clear that the hood is not boxed on the top section.
Glad I saw this as I'm getting ready to do mine.

I just want some information on better driving habits for the T. I know the brakes are terrible, I know a controlled stop is best for the pedals. The spark lever is a big question of mine, it has a bunch of notches but near the middle there's a big notch, it goes past the notch, but unlike behind the notch it doesn't stay, is that normal? also...
Last post
Hi Lucas,
Levers that will not stay in place can be cured with a lever brake. Easy to make, I use a hard wood, drill the steering shaft hole larger than the
shaft & the lever hole smaller than the rods. Drill the bolt holes & then cut in half with a band or hack saw. I like the wing nuts because you
don't need a wrench to make quick adjustments....

Rear axle date codes?

Hi all,
Do rear axles have dates on them, or some kind of date codes to identify year/month of production? Thanks, John
Last post
As John states, it is an easy conversion if you just fit a whole big drum rear axle assembly. All the different bits will be taken care of. The big benefit is the much improved emergency brake.
I have seen more than one car here in Australia with the big drum rear axle, AND 30 x 3.5 clincher wheels. One such car is owned by the original Ford...

Hi all- I’m looking for information on this turn signal. It’s cable operated and seems like it would mount on the right rear fender. When the cable is pulled, it swings from facing forward to pointing right. It’s about 10” tall. Is it original or reproduction? Who made it? Thanks!

1925 Touring » Tue Jan 14, 2025 10:17 pm
First post
Hi all.
I have decided that I am going to install a set of disc brakes on my 22 touring. I've decided that being able to stop better in my mind is better than going 100% original. I know that this can be a controversial topic, like alternators, oil and waterpumps, but it's not invasive to the car, and can be removed if desired.
I am wondering,...
Last post
Don’t get too worked up over disc brakes, they’re great! If you drive conservatively you’ll only notice that you stop with a gentle pressure on the brake pedal, similar to brakes in a modern car. I’ve briefly locked my brakes twice in thousands of miles of driving, both times on loose surfaces. Keep your tires inflated and they’ll be fine.
Since...

Could be interesting to know the origins of those bad IP adresses. Russia is very active over here with cyberwarfare and this seems to be what is called a DDOS (Dee Dos) attack where numerous captured devices tries to access the same website/server at the same time.

Ken That is the type of ski I have. I guess I am being lazy not hauling a floor jack and changing out wheels for skis. I have it set up like you, just remove king pin etc. The time I save traveling with skis is lost trying to load. Just trying not to have to do the switch over in the cold, but maybe that's just the way it is.

Looking through the exhaust outlet, it looks like the muffler middle shell is out of place. GA of course has Moultrie, nothing much than small taters in 'Bama, there's quite a few regionals in Ohio...

I came across this at an antique store today. It seemed too good to pass up. I’m wondering if anyone can please inform me on this? Earlier threads seemed to point out 1914-1915 cars had these. I may or may not keep it depending on its rarity or if someone needs it for their car.

I totally agree with the above red circle. New York City charges double tolls Northbound and none Southbound. If you hit NYC before about 6 AM and after about 9 PM, the traffic is usually manageable. Between those hours you don't want to be there.

When you heated the hub, it expanded outward and inward. Then when you quenched it with water it will shrink more than it was before you started. Since it is a double-sided surface similar to a pipe, the outside diameter gets smaller, and the inside diameter gets bigger due to the wall thickness shrinking from two different directions. That is why...

I have had string-packed water pumps leak air in at higher engine speeds and not leak water out when stopped. That does a great job of simulating a boilover with a non-pressurized system, even when the engine never actually reaches 212. It's also a good way to crack a valve seat.

I have been given a booklet put out by Shell Oil in New Zealand that extols the virtues of Shell Oil for Fords. I susepct the same booklet would have been issued in Australia as well with a different front page.
There is no date on the booklet, so I tracked down its author R T Nicholson's book called The Book of the Ford and found a third edition...

Ford 12 Tooth Pinion

I have this 12 tooth made by Ford that doesn't roll nice on either a 39, or 40 tooth ring gear. You can see it's smaller than a 11 tooth, weird. Then I thought maybe it's made for a 44 tooth ring gear, but the ratio is 3.66, so why do that. You can see it's cut like a 9 tooth.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Could it be NRS?

You are welcome.
Its another of those interesting, short lived design/engineering changes that got dropped to save money & labor costs.

Does orientation Matter ?

Hole to top.
However........ If you have a transmission trash screen, it dumps A LOT of extra oil right on the 4th main leaking excessive oil into the U-joint, especially if the 4th main is on the loose side of the clearance spec.

I took advantage of the Christmas time off to play with my '26 touring. The foot starter switch was to the point that it had to be engaged squarely and carefully and still wasn't making great contact. It was either time to replace it or attempt a repair. I decided to add a 6 volt solenoid but didn't necessarily want to modify the car or the...

I have decided to make up ten kits just to get a firm number on material and labor. They would include the 2/0 cables, solenoid, mounting bracket, trigger wire, clamps and bolts to mount. That would be all that would be required to complete an installation that used the foot switch to energize the solenoid. If you desired to use a remote push...

Here’s a photo that was on Facebook I thought was really telling. I have a small Texas plate like the one above that I found in my Grandfathers garage that’s in fair shape. I’m in Texas and I’m pretty sure the plate I have was on the Coupe I inherited from him years before. The plate is the first thing that caught my eye. The rest is in the title...

When Chickasha was still going there was an older vendor that had boxes of old car plates but I never found any of the Texas postcard size plates like mine. He had a few of the later Texas plates in the 30’s but not any older. He was from Oklahoma and a really nice guy. What impressed me was that he had boxes full of old plates and the only vendor...

Zooming in on the OP photo, the hood clearly is a late brass era hood, squarish in shape with riveted hinges. The shape under the blanket seems to indicate a late brass era radiator. I agree that the fenders appear to be early after-market modern update fenders. There were several companies that made and sold such fenders, including Ames and...

I am using model A style steering ends on my 26 speedster project, but needed to get some more clearance between the tie-rod and the radius rods. The most elegant way to do it was use an offset tie-rod end. I didn’t find what I wanted so I made them out of a bar of 4130. They use the standard model A innards and give me 3/8 additional clearance. I...

I am using a thin birch ply for strength overlaid with thin strips of mahogany. I have a pile of old mahogany that was used for wainscoting. It’s not the lightest way to build it, but it will be strong.

All this stuff gets older and scarcer with each day that passes. I would avoid scrapping any old car parts, even ones in poor condition or that seem to be in plentiful supply. Tagging such stuff that is in storage is a good idea, too.

This is a call for all West Virginia Model T owners. With a few exceptions, there are no MTFCA chapters within reasonable distance for us to join. I want to change that. Currently, there is an effort to start a chapter near Charleston and I would like to start one in the northern part of the state in the Fairmont/Clarksburg area.
Both chapters...

What is the correct length for a 23 touring?
What was the original finish on it?
Last post
The longer cable may be called for if the speedo drive is mounted on the other side of the car to the speedo. This is sometimes necessary if the swivel joint runs in the opposite direction to normal for a T. Swivels can be LH or RH rotation.

Carter and the Model T

Jimmy Carter was born in 1924. He entered a world full of Model T Fords. In 1976 he beat a man named Ford to become the president off the Unted State. He was an honest man and a man of faith. He served his country as an navel officer. He served humanity for all his life. He was a man of peace. He will be missed, but well remembered.

Regardless of what you think of any of the presidents-past, present, or future-they deserve some modicum of respect for taking that hellish job. They are the Commander-in-Chief, as well.
To make this vaguely Model T related, it occurred to me that I restored my 26 Coupe when Carter was president.

Hi,
my 1922 Fordor was equipped with a Newday timer and drove very fine with my rebuild and ECCT trimmed coils. That was 2 years ago. Back then the one rearaxle snapped, but with a complex fracture so that it retained the wheel. Actually I thought it was a broken tooth in the rear end.
This summer I took the rearend off the car and found out that...

Thanks for posting the picture, I should have done that. It’s an old stage station on the route over San Marcos Pass. One of my ancestors worked at one of the other stations (Cold Spring Tavern) on that route during the stagecoach days.

Hello, I have a king pin on my 26, that keeps wearing. I have replaced the passenger side one a couple times. The driver side has not been replaced in 20+ years, and it is in good condition. I am wondering if the root cause is somewhere else??

When the king pin gets changed do the bushings get changed too? Also if it’s the same side is the axle slightly bent out of alignment vertically?
When reaming the new bushings they need to be reamed exactly straight vertically. Could be the tie rods ends could be worn and the entire axle assembly needs to be taken off and ALL the bushings...
