The new 0.030 oversize aluminum pistons we ordered arrived the other day, so today I began removing the connecting rods from the four-ring cast iron pistons that were in this 1924 engine. Bud you are probably right! It probably could be used for a T for a tie down if it was mounted on the running board but a general use beam clamp is probably the closest ID yet.

Even wearing an NH, Lizzie was making me work too much to get started. Wire brushing all the soot off the plugs improved starting considerably.
Last post
No, but if it wasn't starting perfectly maybe it would make a difference. If I understand this correctly, higher compression reduces the ability of plugs to make a spark. Maybe a slightly smaller gap would make for a better spark under the higher compression.

Those 21 inch model T split rims are made of fairly soft steel. They get warped easily by misuse of rim spreaders, tire irons, and other pressures applied for a variety of reasons. The flip side of that, is that they are not difficult to straighten. I draw an appropriately sized circle on cardboard, it makes it easier to see where the tweaks are...

I just noticed that my Ruckstell axle width is about 2 inches narrower that my front axle. This is on a 1926 tudor. Question is ,did ruckstell axles come in different widths? My present ruckstell axle has a small backing plate and should have been a large backing plate, which means someone has changed the rear axle.
Thank you

Wide track were made for southern roads where they grew cotton. The cotton hauling wagons were wider, so the road ruts were wider. Ford made Wide Track cars to accommodate southern roads.
Here is a photo comparing axles, courtesy of Peter Kable.

Hello guys,
thought I would work on the bows today and I discovered some things that don't make sense. Mostly they look like 18 roadster parts but as you can see when set up there is something not right. Note the middle bow has to tabs but only one will allow the bows to rest correctly when folded up. In the position shown there would be no room...

Stopped at a barn where I was told there was lots of old car parts. Yup... all kinds of stuff in one old shop building but mostly 1940s and up. Lots of NORS fenders for 1960s cars. Then I went to the back barn and there was a fair amount of T stuff and other early pieces. Two Reo trucks. Several Ts in different stages of condition. I did come away...

A knowledgeable friend told me that the transmission inspection cover on my car was upside down. It was painted on one side, so I figured that was the outside. Is this a prank played on newbies? According to the image the tank will hold about 10 U.S. gallons, BUT if you drain the tank through the drain plug (not shown)- only 8.5 gallons will flow. The other 1.5 gallons will stay in the tank to rot.

As I say, I am not an expert on these early early cars. I know that the the first rear housing did not have rivets near the differential. They were a single extruded piece of steel. The extrusion process left the thickness of the metal uneven, and the extrudable steel tends to be soft yet work hardens resulting in uneven strength and flexibility....

You might consider turning the gas off then running the car for a minute or two to burn the gas in the line and carburetor bowl. If your sediment bowl valve is indeed shutting everything off, that should solve your problem until the next time.

I converted my headlights to use a 12 volt LED bulbs wired in parallel. I chose bulbs that work with the original BA15 sockets. The left one works great - the right one flashes on and off with no rhyme or reason. I've:
1.) Swapped bulbs
2.) Changed plug-in sockets
3.) Ran a separate wire from the + on the plug-in socket to a independent 12 volt...

Here's the latest - I replaced the socket in the headlight - I couldn't see anything obvious wrong with the old one but I can't see what's going on between the contacts because they're encased in a rubber cylinder. I also cleaned the mounting shaft on the headlight and the receptacle in the frame to insure a good ground. No flicker now and I...

Does anyone have a diagram of the Allen Coil Tester? I have one I'd like to restore but I'm not sure how some of it comes apart. I'm hoping all it needs is the magnets charged, but I won't be that lucky !

If the Allen tester in question has a brake drum spark indicator, then assembly is straight forward as Humblej said.
If it has the rotating spark indicator, then contact Ron Patterson for details about those.

Hi, My 12 rivet differential leaks slowly at the two lower most bolts. A few drops a week. See picture. The fluid level was down as expected when I opened the filler bolt so it isn't communicating with the engine oil. The fill hole does not appear to be leaking. How much torque should the bolts be? I did find the bolts loose a month ago and...

At least you got two years out of it before it leaked Ignacio! :)
Mine leaked right away. Smooth, clean surfaces with the dings and high spots brought down with a file...
I need to do this yet: Perhaps clean the bottom mating surfaces with thinner, dry it and smear on some ultra black.
Good reminder tho! I need to check the fluid level...

Do any of you guys have any vinyl graphics on you T ? How well do they hold up over the yrs ? I'm wanting to add something on each door of my Roadster when I get it back together in honor of my good friend who gave me the car. I'd much rather have it hand lettered but I'm sure that would be lots of $$$$$$.

Is there a difference between the grease cup used on the rear axle/driveshaft and the steering bracket? Parts vendors call out two different part numbers #2545 & #3596 respectively. Curious minds want to know

While we're in the subject, are grease cups with a brass cap older than those with a steel cap ? My '13 has an assortment, no cauliflower caps (good name !) but that doesn't mean much. She was restored when I got her and I know nothing of the provenance .

Your stabilizer is missing the axle clamp pieces, and the base piece for the tie rod.
It's installed like any of the many stabilizers made, clamp the mechanism to the inside of the front axle, then attach clamps from the device to the tie rod. As you steer, the mechanism dampens the road bumps.
Most are spring loaded to provide some resistance...

Good morning!
I'm in the process of assembling my early engine with a 26/27 crankshaft. After reading all of the posts about broken crankshafts, I was interested in opinions about adding counter weights. Do you think it would help protect the crank, in other words less stress?
Have a great day!

Last post
IMHO, probably the major cause of broken cranks in a 'non-souped up' engine is a misaligned 4th main and then line boring of mains not properly done 'in line' (it is scary how many 'professionals' can't get that right!).
If all mains don't line up 'square' the crank flexes just a bit = stress fractures = broken crank. Balancing can help but won't...

So true. Once you begin to ‘become one’ with your T, you appreciate soothing sounds unlike any other antique car.
Some noise can be common, the typical groaning of the straight cut planetary gears winding up as you go to high. Just part of the charm, along with certain rattles, squeaks and creaks from aged on years.
But you do learn to...

The box end wrench is marked Fomoco in an oval. Is a car or tractor wrench. I found the box end along with the 6” Stilson wrench. It was on the bottom of a box of old files and hammers. Looks like it wasent used much considering the condition of the handle.

John, using that tool to remove grease cups makes good sense. Most I have seen appear to be cast iron, and as such will not take a heavy load without breaking. I have seen square nuts holding the wheels on horse drawn buggies, and thought that may be what the wrench was for.
