Winfield SR vs Zenith S4BF

First post
My car came with the Winfield SR. It was in pretty bad shape. It leaked, the float wasn’t set correctly, the linkage was messed up. And the car ran like crap. I ended up buying a stock Holley NH on eBay and I refurbed it and while the car ran great, it was underwhelming to say the least. At least I had a benchmark st start from.

I just bought one a while back, Langs sells them.
On mine I increased the size of the mounts so that they can be drilled thru. This allows me to mount the exhaust manifold then mount the intake separate allowing for removal without having to disturb the exhaust.

When I tried to fit a new inner neoprene axle seal it seemed like the hole in the seal was not large enough to fit over the axle. I was able to push it about half way along the taper but it would have taken a large force to stretch it enough to slide onto the shaft.
My axle is 1.062 (which seems standard) and the hole in the seal is 0.78 . Is this...

My first glance. I instantly thought an earlier five panel rear tub! As I both looked the photo over and began reading comments suggesting a later body, I saw that what fooled me was a flaw, some sort of shadow on the picture. At closer look, the shadow goes down through the rear fender and onto the rear wheel, so clearly a flaw, or shadow caused...

Hey Fellers,
I realize this isn't a stock Ford-type upholstery fabric but I see this black vinyl marine pleated stuff everywhere and wondered if anyone ever tried it in a hot rod or stock Model T? I am curious how it would lay on our cushions and backrests? Naturally this is not proper, I realize that.
Curiously,

The B usually indicates a body built by Beaudette , one of several companies that supplied the bodies in 1915. I have never seen an M like that before, and since the size and font do not match the B , it is probably for some other purpose. Seat frames and many other details varied a lot in those years. Pretty sure the difference is that the supplier is selling to Snyder's and Langs directly. Mac's then buying from them. Same spring.
A thought is to have a local person roll a new base leaf. They will use slightly thicker stock. Better support especially for the front. I did this years and thousands of miles ago. Still happy.

On our Canadian sourced cars, the hole in the top of the hood shelf, with the hard rubber grommet, is the last incarnation. Earlier cars had the notch in the side.

The parts list called out the nut for bolt 3968 (as nut) and it is drilled for a cotter pin too, yet there is probably no reason for this nut in the first place, since there is no stress or rotation other than a slight pivot of the fan arm and it goes through the timing cover and threads into the block boss on top, so I...

I'm not as well read on 1912 stuff but McCalley's book states for 1911 that the model year runs Nov. 1910 through Dec. 1911 approx and for 1912 the model year runs Jan. 1912 to Sept 1912 approx.
That is correct, the arm continued to be used as it was even though they retained the bump for awhile after moving the tension bolt from vertical to the...

What started out as a simple cracked hose replacement now looks more serious. I know my TT sat for several years before I acquired it last February. Based on the corrosion I’m seeing in the flanges, it appears that it may have sat with raw water or weak antifreeze. I will flush the engine with CLR but am now concerned that I won’t get the radiator...

Good ideas from all. Thanks. I’ll try to get it cleaned up and sealed. The little bit I have had it out on the road did not highlight any major cooling issues although probably did not give it a proper stress test yet. Do any of the Vendors sell solid hood rods ? I just got a set of SS rods from Snyder's that are hollow like original. I know I got a set of solid rods for my Model A several yrs back and they are easier to install without risking bending. The catalogs I have doesn't say if they're solid or hollow.

I have found a real easy way to remover and replace rods. Lubrication and a drill motor. Apply lube. Clamp the end of the rod in the drill motor and slowly spin it. At the same time either pull out or push in to remove or reinstall.

Eric, when you wind the adjuster out, you may find that the pedal shaft is still inside the threaded hole in the trans cover, making a simple insertion of the suggested washer not possible. You could then resort to replacing that adjuster with a less beat up one with a neat end on it. Wear on the band ear may mean that this will not last long, but...

I fit my New Day timer to the engine today and have a question: How easily should the timer rotate? Do you adjust the ease of turning by bending the piece of steel flat stock that holds the timer in place?
Last post
The timer tension springs are set at the factory. You don't need to do a thing. I have no knowledge on the new New Day timers, as I have dozens of good old originals. I wouldn't mess with it, however, before you connect the tension spring, I would rotate the time in the front cover to see how it feels.

It depends on what you are lifting. If you're lifting one axle, you're OK because you will not be lifting the entire 12,000 lb. The 12,000 lb may be the loaded weight as in Gross Vehicle Weight Maximum. The empty trailer will be much less. If you're lifting the tongue, again, you're fine as you're no where near the 12,000 lb. I have these two covers that was in a pile of parts that I had. They measure 8“ x 4 1/2“ I don’t know of any T that would use them.
Are they even for an automobile?
If you have an idea what they might fit let me know.

So I get a call today from the previous owner of my T “I’m closing my auto repair shop and I have a few parts I found you can have.”
I was there in an hour. Pics below of what he gave me. I’ve never seen these two carbs before. Perhaps someone can shed some lighting what they are ? I know one is a Zenith and very similar to my S4BF and the other...

Zoom Zoom Zoom compared to Zoom Zoom S4BF!
Well then I’ll get right on that! It came with the car and I never seemed to be able to get the motor to run right with it. After a stock Holly and then your SB4F I now know what a good running Model T motor sounds and feels like so it’s probably time to revisit it.

As I get time I have been working on this speedster which started out as a nearly complete chassis (no radiator, steering, and a plywood frame) that was going to be parts for an earlier car to then be replaced as I rebuilt the earlier parts. Of course I got to thinking since it had been a running car that was stripped of its body for a hot rod why...

Finishing up a mechanical rebuild and will soon be focusing on a new ignition set up. Would like opinions on who to use to rebuild coils and whether I should stick with an original timer or go with a modern electronic unit and if so, which one.
Last post
The E-Timer's resistors bypass the coil points. I assume that point adjustment is no longer needed except as a backup if a stock timer is temporarily installed. Don't the coil capacitors need to be operating properly to run efficiently on battery rather than magneto with an E-Timer? I have decent coils but no mag and I will probably install an...

Lets try that again but NOT in the for sale section.
Educate me guys. Haven't seen my T Service Manual in years. I need a gasket between the transmission ball cap and the driveshaft ball, right? Is there a gasket between the transmission ball cap and the engine pan/hogs head?

There is only one that goes between the ball cap flange and back of the hogs head/pan.

Kevin has pointed out that ZDDP has a beneficial use where valve spring pressure is high; that is not a T.
As far as STP being a benefit, I would warn that bands often react very negatively to any type of friction modifier or viscosity enhancing/reducing additive. Not something I would do, personally.

I just talked to Ashley at Lang's and she said they're expecting a lead time of up to 8 months on new oval gas tanks.
Does anyone know who the manufacturer is and what the delay might be? I'm going to have to decide whether to try and patch up my old one, or wait for a new one to become available.

your offer is far better than (I think) what most people will give credit for. The POR kit works excellently and I have absolutely no doubt that your old tank could be saved and put back into service for many many more years if thus treated.
I have no doubt that you're right about that Scott. If a local Model T'er doesn't want it, I'll...

1915 Body Bolts

Was Ford still using the early style body mounting bolts in 1915, or did they go to the later style by then? If so, were they still using a castle nut and a cotter pin? The early style had an 11/16 head and nut, whereas the later style uses a 5/8 head and nut. I know this is trivia guys, but some of us like this stuff!
Last post
As far as body and frame bolts and fasteners go I think there was no definitive time change when Ford changed from one to another. When Ford notified the assembly lines of the change the older style that was left was used up and the new style was started.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find the two different styles of body mounting bolts and nuts...

100 years ago William Crapo Durant purchased 60% of Fisher Body from the Fisher Brothers. Does anyone know when in 1919 this occurred? Ford Detroit was purchasing bodies from Fisher. I don't know exactly when GM acquired Fischer Body Corporation, however, I believe Ford was still using Fischer built coupe bodies in 1924, and I think '25.

I just finished rebuilding my driveshaft and rear axle on my 1910 and test fit the entire assembly. I wanted to be sure there were no snags before applying grease and gasket sealer so I left that off. Everything seems to fit...

Yes, I agree with Joe.
A newly rebuild drive line will require a bit of grunt to turn it and my experience you require a 12” crescent
on the Universal Joint to spin it over. The total of all those tighter clearances certainly add up and if you have
confidence that all are within spec, button it up and move forward! With my 1910, my only mistake...

I've heard of this problem on the McLaren wheels before. I've run a variety of clinchers, both 30x31/2 and 30x3 along with Buffalo wheels. I've never run over 55 pounds of air. Knock on wood, I've never slipped a tire. I couldn't imagine running some of the pressures recommended on this thread.

These are pre 1975, so they will be Imperial volts, which are a little more than US volts. About 1.1 times I think.
Hope this helps. 😊
