I didn’t put a skeleton filled T on the lawn this year. I figured I would use some cues from the Wednesday Addams series that’s popular now. Instead of a ‘38 Pontiac, I used my ‘41 Ford. “Wednesday” is in the back seat with a wig and a doll on her lap. Thing is perched on the front seat.
I used fifty feet of LED strip lights and a light bar under...

Babbitt 4th main versus ball bearing

I've have heard many times here that ball bearing 4th mains are bad, it'll break your crank! .
But why? Does a babbitt 4th main have more give ? Is it more about alignment? If a babbitted ball cap is installed cocked , does it just wear in with slightly less contact when done? When a pan flexes, does the babbitt just wear at the edges during the...

Ball or roller bearings are commonly used at the rear of the mainshaft in later transmissions. It's common to see a babbit lined bushing at the rear tailshaft when it also serves to support a sliding driveshaft yoke. I don't think a ball or roller 4th main on a T could contribute to crankshaft problems as long as it was properly engineered AND...

There is no need to drill any holes in the running boards. Simply make a wooden base board for the toolbox to sit on. remove the two running board bolts and the two nearest fender bolts, either at the front or rear, and use longer bolts to fix the base board in place, It will sit on top of the dimples so moisture will not be held. Then screw the...

A probably 1914 runabout, apparently a few years old, I believe the license plate is one issued new to an owner of a pre1915 automobile using the previously issued numbers. For the water outlet and inlet gasket try making your own:
1 On the head or block, apply a layer of Ultra Black
2 On the outlet or inlet, smear grease;
3 Tighten the bolts enough to flatten the Ultra Black;
4 Let it set up and cure;
5 Tighten the bolts.
If you remove and reinstall those parts later, apply only new grease.
I mention Ultra Black...

Probably. But if it is higher in dielectric properties than ordinary grease, it might not be the best thing to put on electrical contact surfaces. I'd think most greases would cause issues in a timer in cold weather, or once they become polluted. Hi All,
Looking at trim options for speedsters.
In the Orange field at Hershey were two 1922 Mercers. On the semi restored Mercer was a 1/2 oval steel trim riveted along the edge of the cowl. Looks like brass or copper rivets. See photos. This was typical for a 1920's era car and used on one of my original speedster bodies.
I anyone aware where...

1/2 ovals are available through wood boat restorers places. Used all the time in old boat resto's. Comes in several heights and widths and is all C35000 brass (old 350 for us white-hairs) so is generally bendable (and sometimes when going through a reseller for the product you can actually get it in dead soft annealed). For tight curves you would...

How to pull a T onto a tow truck

I have read that if the Model T is pulled by its front axle, the wishbone ball socket can be pulled from the crankcase.
Those of you who have had your T pulled up onto a flatbed tow truck, where was the winch line attached to the car?
Last post
DO NOT PULL ON THE CENTRE OF THE AXLE! One participant on our recent national rally used the winch cable around the centre of the axle as the only tie down in his enclosed trailer. Then drove the 700km trip to the venue. The result was a car so squirrely to drive that his guest driver would not use it after fighting with it on the first day.

Hard to match it, but some similarities. The builder of the car did make some modifications to the original design.

Check the hardness of the ring gear with a file. A ring gear should not be so hard that you cannot file the edge of a tooth. Those look like brittle failures, which a hard gear might cause. Just something to easily check.

Hello from the UK,
I am new to Model Ts and am 6 weeks into owning a 1924 Tourer. Although should I say Touring, since it was imported from the US? It was 're-built' 20 odd years ago (no real history...) to 12V alternator, starter, indicators etc to make it an every day car rather than a show car. Perfect for me.
Anyway, I am working around it...

Thank you so much for that.

Well that makes sense and I really should have engaged brain first!
And thank you for the shortcut link to the Gallery - I had found the amazing Vowellart diagrams but not gone as far as the bolt chart. Really, the resources on here are outstanding. What with...

You know those special screws for the bendix cover, well I dropped one today.
I was bent over the door frame and unscrewed the left side screw and went to get it and it fell and hit the creeper under the car and disappeared. Found the washer that was on it but not the screw. Had a good lite to use while looking for it but no luck. Next time I get...

I am with Vernon on this. A dropped screw will not go far. The head is bigger than the shaft, it is a cone, it will not roll away, just roll in a circle. If it isnt nearby on the floor it has fallen on the chassis or fell in the engine.

Anecdotes Wanted - Pulling My Engine for the First Time

Hello all,
I’ve been a frequent lurker and infrequent poster for a long while now. Months ago, I made the choice to pull the engine on my car. The initial plan was finish the body, drive it for a “bit”, then do all of my mechanical work later. And I simply don’t work that way. If it means another year or two off the road to do it right, so be it....

Likely TMI . . .
My first love was a 1920 cutoff touring derelict that had been driven into the ground and left outside with the hogshead removed. As a wide-eyed 14 year old, my perception of “restoration” was to disassemble everything, clean it, paint it, and reassemble.
Pulling the engine was accomplished with the help of two buddies on either...

Wondering if anyone has found or built custom depot-hack seats?
I have a Pleasantville body on my 1926 Depot Hack that came with a single seat; I’m looking to add two jumper seats and a rear bench like in the attached photos. Ideally the upholstery would be tan. We (My Dad and I) can do basic blacksmithing and could fabricate wrought-iron parts,...

Hey everyone.
I pulled these tires off a '13 that I bought about six months ago. This is what I found after cleaning decades of gunk off of them.
They're definitely OLD. They both have Monkey Wards Riverside tread but no brand name on them. They both have raised 30 x 31/2, 4 PLY, OVERSIZE MADE IN U.S.A. AND TRADE MARK markings on both sides....

Thank you, gentlemen, for the responses and thoughts on the tires. I kind of figured the yellow markings would remaon a mystery.

Also should that measurement be taken when it is assembled with all springs attached or by itself. On the floor or on the shackles.

Difference between early and late frame brackets for body brackets?
by

I have an assortment of frame brackets for my 12. These are the ones that are riveted with two rivets to the sides of the frame that the body to frame brackets would mount to. Some the steel is thicker than the others.
Anyone know if the earlier brackets were thinner or thicker than later ones?

With older Model T’s that had the tank under the seat, running out of gas on long inclines was a common occurrence. Not so much with the ‘26-‘27 that had the tank in the cowl.

I did upholstery on collector cars for about 30 years. Saddle soap is good for older leathers, especially for those that are surface coated. More modern leathers that are vat dyed do not recommend saddle soap, just a cloth with warm water and regular soap.

There is an oil tube inside the engine with the funnel right below the magneto to direct oil to the timing gears and Rod & Main #1.
The best way to clean it is to remove the front cover and blow back from the front to make sure it is clear.
But on an assembled engine this is not very practical.
So look between the magnets towards...
