Hyatt Bearing Replacement Options

Looking for recommendations on replacement options for the rear axle outer Hyatt bearings. Anyone have experience with the cartridge type timken bearing options? I see a couple of different options that don’t require modifying the axle housing. Expensive but seem like an easy install and pretty maintenance free. Thoughts?
Thanks, David

I ran a set of ball bearing replacement cartridges years ago. They were great, slipped right in and didn’t have to grease em. The ones I had required trimming of the axle tube ends, same as safety hubs. After a few years I pulled the rear to build into a Ruckstell, but couldn’t get the bearing cartridges out. After much effort I had found that the...

I went out tonight for dinner with the car club and my 22 conked out as I pulled into the parking lot. It has spark and compression so it is a fuel issue. Turns out my NH carb was pouring out gas. For heavily tarnished brass, use Bar Keepers Friend and then follow-up with your favorite polish. It works extremely fast, even if the brass is brown. Wear nitrile or rubber gloves when using it.
It's inexpensive and available in powder or liquid and you can find it a Walmart and, if you are in the midwest, Menards. However, my opinion is that...

At road speeds the car will go fine with the top up, but if you put it on a trailer, you should put the top down and if you have a boot, put it on the top when folded down. Especially so if you have a headwind. Don't ask my how I know!

It’s a brass-body G I rebuilt about 7 years ago, using the available composite foam float available from Lang’s. Update for anyone interested in this thread. The block of nitrophyl from Kelch Restorations came in today’s post.
FWIW, its appearance is VERY different from the float blank I had obtained from Lang’s. Smooth, black, with a sheen even when cut, it does not resemble the grey, granular texture of the previous material. IMG_2952.jpeg

Has anyone done a cylinder compression test recording electric starter vs crank psi? I'm losing my strength and find it hard to get over TDC even with the other plugs removed.
Last post
So far, no one has mentioned a “dry test” vs. a “wet test”.
Dry is “as is”, for a wet test, squirt a little oil into the cylinder through the plug hole. Wet/dry variation can tell you something about the condition of your rings. From my experience, a “hold in” gauge is practically useless when checking out a model T.

Like many, I picked up a real Ford tire pump for my Lizzie. I would like it to be functional. Seems to be a good restoration, plunger piston has been replaced with a cup from a hydraulic brake cylinder, it moves air well.
Fitting to attach to the tire stem doesn’t have a point for opening the stem valve. Referring to the Dauntless Geezer’s notes...

If there is a pin to push the valve core stem down, there has to be a check valve on the pump. Otherwise, as Steve said , what you push in on the downstroke simply comes out again on the upstroke. On the inside end of early valve cores there was an external spring on an extended pin in the centre. Perhaps these are what you need for a hand pump to...

Last post
I'm most familiar with closed cars. There are a few originally plated parts on my Tudor that I rarely see plated on restored cars. Such as the spark and throttle rods and the inside door latches. Some of the suggestions above seem more like 1927 than 1926. You should go by McCalley's books which are the best authority for a correct restoration.

I have a set of Excelsior tires I bought over a dozen years ago. They now have over 11,000 miles on them, and show now appreciable wear. I also have the USA made tubes in them with rubber valve stems which have held up equally well. I understand quality USA tubes are no longer available which is disappointing.

I just bought two 440/475 21 tubes last month from Summit Racing, they were identified as Coker on their website but Hartford is what showed up.
For what it's worth, I weighed both the Hartford Tube and an old Ward's Riverside Made in USA tube, the Hartford tube was a little heavier, so at least the rubber is probably just as thick.

I looked at the weather channel a little while ago and saw a radar map of Minnesota. There appeared to be a bunch of tornadoes west of Minneapolis heading east. I think this is the area of the New London to New Brighton old car run. I don't like to see tornadoes any where, but I would like to know our friends in that area are ok.
Last post
Hopefully everyone is ok.
I live 30 miles NW of New London. Was taking the T out for a test drive Sunday, but
after seeing this ominous cloud, returned home rather quickly.
IMG_6120.JPG
Got the T in the garage and closed the door just before the storm hit.
No tornados but had straight line wind and a deluge of rain with hail damage.

I’ve been having some issues with my T — you can check my last post for the full story if you’d like — but I feel like I may have finally pinned it down (at least I hope so).
I decided to check the timing, and when I brought cylinder #1 just past TDC, there was no spark there. Instead, cylinder #4 was sparking. So I took apart my new Day timer...

Does they bottom bolt of the Y carrier use 2849D. If it does or does not, what should it look like?
What holds the tire in place on the bottom of the Y carrier? picture would help. Thank you.
Last post
Missed that, was thinking only of the 2849D clincher 30 tire clamp used 1921 to 1925.
The Y bracket is for the '26-'27 mounts that are on the body. The Y 2873 is for balloon tires, 21 .
The lower stud fits to a rim lug nut to secure the rim and tire. There is a flanged rim nut with holes to also chain the tire and rim with a padlock

I’m working on a Ruckstell shift lock assembly P158C, 26/27. The shifter when installed works fine. My issue is there is a lot of slop in the P-1014-A , not something worn out but a lot of movement in the lever as it moves with the shift lever. At the end of the lever where it attaches to the P-38 shift tube, there is about 1” of play that...
Last post
Do you have the shift lock off the axle housing? Look under the shift fork in the lock body. The p124 finger is below it.
In that finger a 1/2 headed hex bolt should be facing you. Its possible that bolt has fallen out or sheared, in which case a 5/16 hole is seen.

If you turn the crank just a little bit, and the buzzing stops, you are OK.
If the buzzing continues, you have a problem!

So, after a long winter off the road doing wheels, rear end, new axles and kingpins, took her for the first drive today.
Had a rotational knock noise only when rolling, and not consistent. Would happen once then fine for awhile. I thought possibly pin for the u joint slipping out. I was right. Fixed that. Drove it around again and after awhile,...

Look into “ burnishing bushings”. I am of the belief that Ford did some form of this to triple gear bushings.
Also look at ball sizing or burnishing. This is done with a harden ball of a special size to make the bushings a certain size.

Hi.
Meanwhile I successfully replace the roller timer by a new (similar) one.
I also verified the distance of 65mm / 2.5 between spark advance rod on timer and the screw at oil fill socket.
Because the battery was empty, I connected the battery charger and tried to crank start the engine for first test run while the battery is charging.
Of...

don't know what Henry smoked when designing the timer-advance-rod, but that stuff was not good.
It hits the engine block, rubs on water hose, is too close to the timer, ... There would be lots easier ways to link the timer.
If parts are stock, the Ford timer rod for the year of your T will work fine for doing timer adjustments....

One drive around the block with an E-Timer was all it took to know I had to have one. That was nine years ago, and it's been 100% reliable.
Similarly, the ECCT with software is a must have tool for coil analysis and adjustment.

Starting a build thread to track the progress of a “new” speedster build by an enthusiastic 16 y/o, his dad who will document the process (me), and his Model T part supplier & MTFCA past prez grandfather (@tmdltim).

The speedster has been accepted to The Race of the Gentlemen 2025. The race requires a roll bar so Luke, with the help of a great teacher, was able to make a custom roll bar (75% so far) that will be mounted to the frame rails. It will have a couple gussets & braces, then will be fully tig welded.

Hi folks
Just a quick question about over heating. I just got his 22 running for a friend that inherited it from a step father. Beautiful car. The story was the car had a rebuilt engine when they got it. I just fixed the carb from setting for a few years. Car starts and runs great (have not drove it yet) but in about 5-10 minutes it will start...

Even if the tube are clear and it flows good it still may not cool. Over time the the fins are no longer in good contact with the tubes and can not dissipate the heat. As noted Brass Works is the only one making new radiators. They do have a back log.

The rest of the story is they were made in West Virginia by a member of the Paul family that made 50 specials using original 1922 dies and the E was added to keep the metal from warping.
Cliff Jenkins has the rest of this story his book, My first 50 Years .

Hello everyone. I have a klaxon model 21. The horn works but I am missing the adjustment part. I am attaching a picture of the missing part circled in red. If anyone can help me figure out what part goes there it would be much appreciated.I have tried different springs but they seem to just push it out farther out when I need adjustment in.
Last post
I figured it out. A spring goes on the end that I was missing and the adjustment is 2 nuts that slide the entire back section forward and backwards. Here is a quick video of the sound after I got it adjusted.

My second engine Ive built for my 21 touring ( damn broken crankshafts) was rebuild by someone decades ago and shelved, So naturally I go through it to make sure its was built well. Well it wasn't, cylinder clearance too tight, bearings too tight but Ive sorted that. However the 0.080 Pistons seem to stand proud a good amount more above the block...

If you are getting detonation, back off on your spark advance. Your .25 clearance should be plenty. How much total advance are you running now? If much more than about 25 degree,s timing might well be your problem.
