Where is the best place to buy Babbitt material? Who has the formula that is the best grade or one that is the same composition as the Ford model T? Thank you. Erick
Last post
Herm, thanks for the input. I will stick with grade 2. My book on rebuilding model A’s claims that Ford went to a cheaper lead base babbit because they thought the more robust, larger crankshaft did not require the more expensive grade. Maybe that is why the Ford name is on some lower grade babbit ingots? Just a thought. Is your Oldsmobile project...

I had a scare this morning on a drive. Suddenly I began hearing a terrible screeching noise, coming from underneath, sounding like the rear of the car. I began thinking axle bearing. Hi Jon,
The coil terminal of the ignition switch receives power from which ever side the key is turned to, that being magneto or battery AS FORD BUILT IT.
For your application you could wire the fuel pump to coil and then turn the key to BAT to power the fuel pump.
You WILL need a seperate switch to kill (turn off) the DU-4. The Bosch DU-4 is...

A good way to fix a loose pulley is to coat the inside with a liberal coat of tin solder (50/50). Tap it into place, any high spots in the tinning will self cut to size. No shimming, and will last for years.

How does one go about repairing the exhaust manifold threads?
After searching the forum somewhat, here is what I am not talking about:
1) replacing the manifold
2) replacing the pack nut to get a better bite on the remaining threads
3) using exhaust sealant like Permatex 80335 Muffler and Tailpipe Sealer
4) adding a clamp or a ring in proximity...

Improved car headlight bar bolts

I need to replace one incorrect headlight bar bolt on my '27 with the correct carriage bolt. The issue is that I don't know whether the nuts are supposed to be square or hex. The three original-looking carriage bolts have hex nuts, but the taillight bracket has square nuts. I would have thought Ford would have been consistent and used one or the...

You don't need square or eight-point sockets for square nuts. Regular 12-point sockets work just fine. I installed a new carriage bolt and square nuts on the driver's side today with a 12-point socket. I was amazed that my local Ace Hardware store stocks square nuts!

I have wanted to go here for several years, ever since I knew it existed. Eating breakfast at the Northernmost Denny’s in the World! As soon as I found out work was sending me to Fairbanks, Alaska, I already knew I had stuff to go do and see.
I’m not sure on their policy about taking pictures, but if they don’t mind I will take gobs of pics and...

Pardon the drift.
About eight years ago, they were trying to get the Hay-H to be the earliest American built gasoline powered automobile to be regularly driven in the world! There are several American steam and electric cars that run, as well as several European built gasoline automobiles, a few going back as far as 1892. About a dozen earlier...

Does any know the year that Ford Motor Company decided Henrys first car was built in 1896 rather than 1893?
Last post
If you get it printed, it has to be true, right? This is a 1904 ad. The first gasoline autos were Lambert 1890 , Duryea 1893, Haynes 1894. pretty sure there are more sprinkled in there. If you believe this ad, Henry’s was 1889, but really he was a late comer. 53497E76-0E79-4D33-A9B5-91327B5C97F6.jpeg 72210CA3-CAD9-4A0C-8C3E-014CCD2CE51C.jpeg

Is the Universal Ball Cap (4th Main) needed when you install a KC Layne Warford -or does the Warford's input shaft support the back of the transmission??

Also to add, do not over fill either as it will make them puke!

it appears to be 1/8 -27 NPT x ?? -16. Not sure of the dimensions of the large end. I don't have anything to compare it to. It's smaller than 1/2 pipe thread and 16 TPI.

Question IDing year on TT frame and other parts

I was doing a little research on TTs and had a bit of challenge finding things.
First I went the the MTFCA online Encyclopedia. Great resource, but I am not finding the TT info. (Also on the production numbers I don't see pickups listed: I assume the truck is TT though.)
I did find the following thread helpful even though measurements are metric...
Last post
The Pickup started in the 1925 Model year so may be counted in the runabout/roadster listing. Truck would/should be TT only. What it boils down to, the more popular body styles (touring, coupe and runabouts) get the most research. 2 doors, 4 doors not so much. TT's even less. Good luck with your search.

Hansenauctiongroup.com has auction of Roger Bowers estate. Numerous wood bodied trucks in very nice shape. One depot hack. A few cars. Caveat is they state cars run. I was there personally and nothing runs. No gas or old gas in tanks. Some engines look good. Some look OK. There was good compression whenever I cranked the engines, so maybe that is...

Does anyone have any information on how the camshaft driving gear is mounted to the camshaft? Looks like I am missing the part that mounts to the camshaft and holds the driving gear. I don't see a pin hole in the driving gear, but it is keyed so am thinking that a sleeve is mounted to the cam shaft the driving gear floats on it? The only info I...
Last post
Sorry to be getting back to this so late. The gear hole where it fits on the cam is larger then the stub shaft on the cam. There must be a piece that has a locating pin (I can see a spot inside of the gear that looks like wear from a pin) to keep the gear from rotating that would fit on the cam shaft. I am not sure how that piece is held on the...

Last post
Chad, if you have new bushes and cams, and new lined shoes, and you still have no good emergency brake, I would be looking for worn brake drums. The cheap fix usually is to fit a shim on the cam to spread the shoes somewhat. With all new parts at that point, your brake drums are allowing the shoes to expand beyond the effective range of the cam....

ID Oversize Schrader Valve Caps

First post
I picked up these large valve brass Schrader valve caps at an estate sale. They are all stamped Schrader U.S.A.
The inner diameter is 9/16 or approximately 14mm.
Standard Schrader caps are shown for comparison.
Can anybody tell me what the applications were for these? Automobile, truck, airplane, military or non-tire/inner tube related, etc.?...
Last post
They are probably for some non-automotive application like HVAC or refrigeration or practically anything involving a compressed gas.
However, the brass caps are even a larger diameter than the oversize stem ands caps on the compressor for my central air conditioner system. Same goes for my 2003 Pontiac air conditioner.
Years ago I picked up a...

My goof, I could have worded it better - the dust covers are not explicitly marked 777 or 888, my intent was to indicate that each stem length had its own corresponding dust cover length. Thanks for helping me clarify. :)
