I had Ron's Machine shop pour a set of rods for me about 4 years ago. I abandoned that project and now am looking at the rods to use with my 27 project. I have two crankshafts that were reground in the past. In each case the width of the rod at the big end is anywhere from 20 to 50 thou smaller than the journal it rides in. I see on the MTFCA...
Last post
Thanks for the helpful advice. I will test the rods for bend, twist and offset if I will use these rods. I can't help but remember that the engines I had rebuilt by David Daigh came back with close tolerances in the rod journal area. I have inspected all the cranks I have and only one has crank journals that fit my rod with what looks like the...

Can I use Valvoline 10/30 oil in my 1924 Model T?
Last post
Some Model T Fords have a tendency to creep immediately after starting. For obvious reasons, this can be especially disconcerting when hand-cranking. My Flivver stopped that habit when I switched to 5W30 oil. It's just a little more slippery when cold then 10
W30 and that seems to reduce or eliminate the starting-creep.

Gang,
For a parade, what are your thoughts on seating someone, (with the top down), on the raised back edge of the rear seat?
I'm kind of on the fence about it. It seem a bit unsafe to me.
I've got a line on a barbershop quartet that wants a ride.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Greg

Dom, The box idea may have some merit, I'll give it some thought.
Dean, There's a judges stand that we might be stopping in front of.
The plan is for them to sing a bit. I would think they could take different seats when finished.
Great ideas everyone.

I believe this was installed to hold the after market muffler in place. I cannot find it in Ford Parts Price List . What say y'all?
Last post
Lee, your car would have had an exhaust pipe which went clear to the back of the muffler. This makes the pipe itself an internal baffle. Most reproduction mufflers are made with their own internal baffles and a slip joint at the front to take the exhaust pipe. On the eralier cast iron ended mufflers the pipe simply pushed into the casting and the...

Just for discussion sake, I have 21 inch split rims and don't run flaps, I make sure the rims are smooth on the inside. I have never had a flat tire. I also have some old Riverside Tires, (from the 1930's), on my car when I bought it and they did not have flaps and the tubes still held air pressure.

My friend is considering building a Depot Hack but has height issues with his garage door. Anybody ever seen this done? Any idea what the hinges look like?...

You line the hack up with the door, back that sucker up about two hundred feet and put it in high gear. The first time you go into the garage it may be a little rough but after that it will fit every time.

I know it's a little late for this question but if you remove the elbow from the side of the engine block will that allow all the water to drain out, or at least enough that you don't have to worry about cracking the block when the temps get below freezing?
Just before I picked my engine up from the rebuilder last November, he ran it on a dyno,...
Last post
While it's true the plugs were a production feature, it's also true that they will get pushed out if water freezes in the block - whether it saves the block from being cracked is a wild card. Sometimes they escape damage, other times not.

On the way to dinner yesterday, the T started running rough. Parked and removed the plug. The ground electrode was bent flat. UH OH.
Changed it just to be sure. Yup, I have a broken #3 exhaust valve.
So, I've got some work to do. Not entirely sure how to go about it, but I should be fine. How difficult could it be, right?
Last post
Well, the T is back on the road.
It did have two piece valves in it. For want of a more permanent fix, I only replaced the exhaust valves as they were the most severe. I left the intakes alone.
As far as the half of the valve head that broke, it was not in the combustion chamber. Must have blown it out the manifold.
Still runs a little rough,...

Dash Clock Repair?

Hello Everyone!
My 1914 Touring has had this Eight Day clock on the dash for as long as I can remember. It’s also been right twice a day since I can remember. My dad recently took it it a clock repair ship near his house, who told him he could not fix it.
I’m hoping someone has a recommendation to THE clock repair person who could fix it....
Last post
Greg,
The very best antique clock and dash clock repair person is Mike the owner of Time Mart in Pasadena Texas.
281-487-6645 and 281-487-6156. He has fixed several dash clocks for me that couldn't be fixed and he is
very reasonable and prompt. He actually make many of the parts in his minature-ized machine shop.
I am sure he can take of you....

Generally speaking, somewhere out there may be an exception? However, generally speaking, any gear sets that fit in the standard Ford rear end will fit and work in the Ruckstell, and visa versa. The spacings and offsets were designed to be absolutely compatible.
The high speed ring gears are offset farther to allow for the larger pinion gear...

It makes sense to me that a pipe run from the oil fill neck to the carburetor intake would suck air through the engine's crankcase, probably warm the air some too. But what does the fitting in between do, what does it connect to?

This would take some looking in to as the oil filler cap only acts as a vent to relieve crankcase gases created by what gets past the rings. There is no inlet system so you could not suck the gases out.

Ford dealers were doing in car recharge back in the day. With the plugs out, even if you are off a little the field will pull the magnets into alignment. Any asbestos that may be in those is largely encapsulated, bonded and soaked in whatever the black binder material is. I wouldn't worry too much about it. However, I would probably not be wild about grinding it or cutting it by abrasive means.
All that being said, they have no use in a Model T transmission.

You can repair your old switch, better than the reproduction steering column switch IMO.

We've tried to estimate how many Ts are still in existence...how successfully, I don't know.
I had a thought today. Are there any records of how many Ts were totaled or lost do to accident or disasters ?
Kinda reverse analysis.

I doubt this will work as Ford can’t even tell us accurately how many cars they made.
Sure when the stopped production the last one was stamped 15,007,033 but that was engine numbers not cars. They continued to make engines until 1941. Then when you look at the numbers in the Model T Encyclopedia there are gaps in the engine numbers. Some of...

Regardng the model 60 Ford lamps and 75 tail light. I have always assumed the 60s for for 1910 model year Ts. They are used with model 15 head lights. I have a very nice pair of 60s for my 1910 and an unmarked tail light that is the same as the model 75. It is interesting that I also have a pair oif unmarked side lights that resemble model 60s....

Wooden spoked wheel overhaul

I have two wheels that I would like to send to Stutzmans for overhaul. One had a severe wobble. My question is What exactly do they do? I assume that they check the condition of the spokes and replace those that are tired , but do they sandblast/paint the steel parts? Do they paint the spokes? On a rear wheel do you ship the brake drum too? I know...

I have someone interested in purchasing my 26 Huckster, he has a small covered camper I'm guessing about 1200-1600 lbs. The huckster has a fresh recently rebuilt engine and trans (about 500 miles on them). What is the general thoughts on doing this? I don't want to tell him its OK to do this if its an issue?

I guess it's a moot point as i have another buyer who will be using it as originally intended, no trailer.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Picked this up at Turners Auto Wrecking in Fresno. Before posting here, I did some searches for accessory Model T wheels. Found this post;
This my first attempt to post on the new forum and also my first attempt to post pics. If I did it right, the first pic is one I copied from the link above.
The second is the wheel I found at the wrecking...

While checking on a Model T in the 2nd Rallye de Monte Carlo (actually called Rallye de Monaco the first few years), I came across this rally. It seems Henri Depasse, the Ford agent for France wasn't afraid to compete with his stock T's as well as the Ford Special sent from Detroit.
In April, 1912, Depasse and his T were among three first place...

Got one in to put back on the road after a little nap. Very solid 25 Tudor with original body wood and some of the upholstery. Going through the checklist, doing a compression test. Supposed to already have one piece valves. Looks like chassis was worked over in the 80's.

Mine was made by Western Lift, and yes, the reservoir is in the column so there is an air valve and no external tank. I got it from a tire store that removed it before they were asked to, and it didn’t like the newer, lower cars that were coming out thirty years ago. When it was there it was configured the same as it is now. I sandblasted the...

There was an unattended trailer parked in the old formation area close to the bridge for most of the weekend. It had on it some wheel rims that my friend Pete wants for his Chandler. We tried to keep an eye on it through the fence but it disappeared sometime on Saturday while we had our backs turned. Does anyone know who owned it?

Hi everyone, New Model T owner and very excited. I have my serial number and matching body number from frame. I am confused the number when I looked it up said Oct 1926 but my title says 1927. How do I figure this out?
Also, I am mechanical but not a mechanic, any suggestions on what simple books to purchase to (1) go over Model T and make sure...

Well it has been a long winter but I have started to assemble this old coupe after almost 60 years of setting in pieces in a barn. I am impressed that it was about 85% complete and no major rust or damage. I even found the reason they took it apart, bad magneto and starter. Well replaced both got her painted while off the frame and just started...

Most folks I know use 5-30 or 10-40.
Seems like 5-30 does a better job of running down the Oiler tube and splashing around.
I use 5-30.

Could I get someone to measure the thickness of a standard crankshaft flange for me? I have a growing suspicion that mine was faced off to true it up and a bit too much was removed, causing my drum/band alignment problem. Thanks!

Per Ford Drawing the rear crankshaft flange is .316/.320 then finished ground to .3125 give or take. This should give you a starting point. J

My '15 radiator rod receiver has been slightly bent upwards from a previous owner, and before I do anything I wanted to ask the pros about strength of this part? What is the best way to bent this down ever so slightly to accept the radiator rod without sripping nor doing damage, or breaking the solder?
In the pic it looks almost straight, but it...

Finally made it back from Chickasha. We had a good time as usual. The weather was brisk and breezy most of the time, but we survived. We did very well this year, both buying and selling. Steve, I like your setup better than mine. I think my setup came with longer king pin bolts. So no modification to the axle should be needed on my setup either .. Now it may become a problem when I need new king pin bolts ...
If only the bearing surface was worn, try nickle plating & ground to size.

Paul Whiteman is with a L-29 Cord front wheel drive car. All L-29 chassis were used from 1929 to 1934, I believe.
Straight 8 cylinder Lycoming engine, Cord made complete cars and also supplied chassis to custom body manufacturers
