bought these two spanners in a junk emporium a day or two ago. Because of the Ford script, the chunky one was $10. The other has had the Ford ground off for some reason, so it was only $2.
I presume the chunky one is older. Can anyone enlighten me ?

I like the Mark Topics Read feature, but is there a way to limit its action to only the currently viewed page?

This morning the new threads extended onto a second page. I went to page two, read one or two threads, then clicked on Mark Topics Read .

When I went to page one, all of its topics were also marked read, which isn't what I had intended....

I would like to rebuild my drive shaft the car is a 1917 (enclosed spool) so the drive shaft thrust bearing is not available. Can I use the 21 to 27 thrust bearing? These are part numbers 2591 (Qty 2) and 2591B (Qty 1) would the length stack up the same?
I know about the fun projects set up but I rather use some of the parts I have…

Thanks for all the replies and inputs, I defiantly have a path forward. I have a NOS Hyatt bearing, just need to get the shaft sleeve. If the bearing is still useable, I will get new balls and snap ring. It must have been apart before as the u-joint pin as missing and I have a ring and pinion set for the rear axle. Little off topic. Last week I was looking for some information on Bosch magnetos. I came across images of the US plant during WW1. It was taken over by the US Government for at least the duration of the war. Instead of being shut down, it must have been important enough to the war effort to keep open.

Well, we certainly appreciate the kudos. It's a $*%tload of time and work, but seeing others use the features we implement and really enjoy it, makes it all worthwhile.

My 1924 stock T Model Coupe's generator (6 volt system) puts out 6-8 amps at regular road speed (30-35 mph). Last week in about 15 mile drive it went from 6-8 amps to the max on the gauge of 20 amps.The volt meter I have on the car went from 7-71/2 volts to almost 10 volt reading. the new springs do not have the S shaped aluminum channel to receive the bead on the upholstery like later years.
the new covering kit I received does not have the bead either.
The spring does have an aluminum U shaped edge that only opens toward the spring coils and is smooth on the outside.
Question,, is this edge supposed to be on top or...

Look on the bottom side of the doors for a body number.
My late 1911 and cars through 1912 used hardboard covered artificial leather on the underside of the springs. The whole assembly was stitched together. Instead of hardboard I used 1/8 plywood and cut reliefs for the body irons. The originals just sat of the irons and brackets.

We have always used lamp black it is a powder you mix with solvent and used with a spray bottle we respray the rad every 10 years,the solvent drys and your left with a flat black color and it does not affect heat transfer. I believe this is how it was done in the old days , Dad used it in 1960 our rad is still the original rad Cheers Colin

I am dooing a revision on my steering gear and bussy I came across some questions

does any body know why I get 3 new gears and 4 pins
in my car where installed 3 short pins and now I have it all open I can see that the top pin should be the long one.
but why than I get 3 shorts...

Before the cold set in Mark Eyre and I got the engine in my '13. This is a major upgrade for the car as it has been running an '18 engine for probably 70+ years. There is a lot more do do to get ready to tour but I am happy to be at this point now. 20190117_185532.jpg

Very interesting question! First of all, were the patent plates supplied by Ford, or the body maker. If by the body maker, then it's anyone's guess. I've seen the large plate on cars as late as March 1913. BTW, Randall Anderson had a set of stamps made that duplicate the style of numbers that Ford used.

Just got back 6 Model t coil from Erik Larson modeltcoils.com boy he did a great job. He repotted, adjusted and shipped them back to me in less than a week. I had him set them up on the ECCT. Now I only have to wait 3 months before I get to try then out. His pricing was fair and he packaged them very well. Just another great vendor help to keep...

I happened to have on the TV Texas Terror (1935) starring John Wayne. It features a brass era T touring car that serves as a stage (says so right on it). As the T enters the scene it's steaming pretty good from the radiator. The driver stops, walks over to a water hole (looks more like a mud hole), picks up a bucket that is obviously waiting there...

About 10 years ago, I worked on a 31 American Austin...
Pulled the engine and trans. and fabricated the clutch release fingers to get the clutch to release.
Reinstalled and got it running and driveable.
I'm less than 200lbs, and two people was a tight fit !!
Had to transport it on a lawn trailer, too narrow for a car trailer :?

I've been replacing rubber stemmed tubes with authentic Schrader and Dill valve stems for years, and have never had a problem until today, with a foreign tube. The valve stem cores in the American tubes used to twist out easily, but not this foreign tube! I had to carefully drill out the core from the tube with about three different size drills...

I have a 1927 Tudor with a vaporizer carburetor. The car is very hard to start when it is cold. But when the engine is warm, it starts very easily. It there an adjustment to fix this hard starting?

I was having the same problem. I tried clearing all my history, still no good re-loaded the address in my saved bookmarks several times, no good. Then I got bold and clicked the Delete Cookies at the bottom of the page and cleared it, has been good to go. I think I had to re-log in, clicked remember me.

There used to be a guy who made new sets of 5:1 gears for a TT. The last I heard he was selling them for $1,800.00/set!!! Are they still available?.

My understanding is, the Ford Model A ring gear can be used (worm drive) but has to be machined to fit the case. The gear is just a little too wide. Where it mounts in the diffy is ok, but you need to take off about 1/16 to 1/8 off both sides of the gear area. Of course you would still need the TT drive gear.

Exactly correct. They lost the $80 speedometer cable I bought at Hershey. Because it wasn't a new item with a store receipt the insurance was worthless.

I have read that prior to the release of the Model A, Edsel Ford commissioned a handful of 6 cylinder model T's. I have a couple of photos of one and would like to know more of the history of them.

Yes. It takes three 45 gram cartridges to fill a 30 x 3.5 inch tire to 60 psi. The cartridges get really cold when they discharge, so you need to wear gloves or wrap the cartridge with a towel when you discharge it to keep from freezing your hands.

Guys: Has any one here ever drilled out the bolt holes in a Z head for 1/2 head bolt? If so what problems did you run into. I have test drilled a Ford iron head and works fine. Thanks for any info. Dan

As Allan mentioned the Keyserts work very well. They use standard tap sizes for the outer thread & have 2 thicknesses for the insert. The thin wall 7/16 insert has a 9/16 outer thread so the 1/2 hole could be drilled out to make it work. The key in using these is to follow the instructions carefully, once installed they will not come loose.

I am looking for a frame drawing / blueprint that shows the correct frame tapper and hole locations on the frame. Preferably a 1912-1914 frame but can work with other year drawing if it will get me close. The ones I have been finding are from hot rod shops and don't give the proper dimension.

Just seen an ad in the new AACA mag. Coker tire now has 440/450 R21 tires for sale. I’ll be needing tires soon, but just doesn’t seem right to have radials on the old truck.
The brand is American Classic, not listed on their site yet.

Kerry, why would radials need zero camber? I would think any tire/axle design would need camber to counter act the inner and outer diameter of the turning radius. What difference would radial tires make? Just curious. Dave

I have non-demountable bands in my transmission and have started installing wood bands. I checked the steel bands on an old drum and managed to pound them fairly round. I've only drilled the holes in the wood so far, but noticed that the ends of the metal bands are slightly bent inwards at the lugs, probably from years of being tugged by the pedal...

Yes you could use heat on that Ford tough steel. But surprised the lugs are bent!

Most times a little gap of the riveted steel band to those lugs is unlikely to cause much issue. Just do try to get the new wood linings to protrude out the end of the metal band.

Started snowing a little while ago...we're in the
10 -12 areas. Wind and temps in the single digits. After the storm goes through, a potential for lake effect snow for Sunday, and another 6 !

Wife went to the store yesterday and I have no reason to leave the house, other than plowing the driveways.

I recently sealed up my differential with Permatex Gear Oil Gasket Maker. I did a little experiment at the same time, applying some between two pieces of aluminum sheet metal and clamping them together. The sealant is supposed to cure in 24 hours but the fine print says it may take longer under cold and dry conditions.

I don't leave the heat on...

According to the pkg, this sealant is designed to be used in a gear oil situation. Gear oil tends to break down RTV and the gear oil is to be used where gear oil is present.
This document tells it all. With RTV I had a pretty good seal with slight leakage. With Gear Oil Gasket Maker I have had zero leakage.
