When I attempt to enter the forum by selecting forum 2019 , I get into a request page asking for all my user info. When I fill out the form, my user name and email address comes back as being used . I fiddled around and somehow got to this point and can see the form and use it. What am I doing wrong??????????????
Last post
Dick, I had the same problem. I think it was because i was coming at the 2019 forum via the 2018 model, which is now unable to take posts. I got around it by going to Chris's post in the 2018 forum and hitting the link he posted for 2019. When I figure out how, I will add 2019 to my favourites list.
Hope this helps.

Cracked hub repair

Hello, I was hoping to get some advice on a wire wheel hub that has a crack on the outer bearing surface. I'm concerned on the pressure
on this surface when the bearings are tightened. My question is, has anyone tried to weld the crack closed.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Steve
Last post
Dan, you are correct about the fit of the cups. i could not edit the first post and corrected the advice in the second. Because the wire wheel hubs are thin where the outer cup goes, they are often stressed so that the outer cup is just a slide in fit. They need to be carefully inspected and a trial fit done to really be safe.

Should the visible outside edge of the spindle bushings be left natural, or were they painted black after assembly? In other words, when all is said and done, should you see brass-colored rings or should you see all black?

Identify This Part - Model T?

Can anyone identify these 4 parts, the year and if they are Model T? They are 2.75 inches long not counting the threads. They are black now but have some brass plating underneath. I think they might be prop nuts for a top. IMG_0039.jpg IMG_0035.JPG IMG_0029.jpg

I know Model A's had wood in the channel for the front seat mounts, not sure is the T did, but if they did, the threaded part looks too short.

My first Model T was a 1926, and it had a 490. It also had 30X3 1/2 wheels, and used the same wheel set up as the earlier cars. I guess whoever bought the car new didn't want 21's, as it had all the Ford accessories on it.

I'm desperately trying to save the fan pulley/hub for my 1918 engine. The fan blades are junk, but the aluminum pulley is in decent, usable shape. Unfortunately, all four rusty steel screws are frozen solid in the aluminum. So far, I've heated the screw heads with a propane torch (to keep temperatures down), applied a good penetrating oil twice....

By the way, stay away from those spiral (un)easy outs. :) All they are good for is removing bolts that have been broken off from side pressure, not ones that have twisted off. All they do is lock the bolt in tighter as you try to remove it, or twist off making it pretty much impossible to drill it out. The square type easy outs are much better....

Coatings are a large part of my business, with a heavy emphasis on restoration/
preservation/old look kind of work. I am assuming this body in question is wood.
Several suggestions above regarding penetrating oils are good for durability and
and water repulsion. You want the material absorbed into the wood, not a skin-
coat sealer that WILL fail...

A generator must have a load of some sort on it, or it will self destruct by overheating itself. Ordinarily, the battery is its load. Rear wheel nut torque

I know that Henry didn't specify a torque value for rear wheel nuts other than really tight. I've done some research and found 70 ft-lbs, 120 ft-lbs and 200 ft-lbs suggested in early posts. Anyone care to chip in with your recommendation?
Last post
So, if my calculations are anywhere near correct, using this wrench, a person would need to push with just over 45 lb. of pressure on the end of the wrench, to get 70 lb/ft of torque on the axle nut. Seems logical. But, if a person really leaned on the wrench, with his body weight, you could get well over 100 lb/ft torque. I'm still confused. I...

Re Mark, since both electrodes on the old brass-top Champions are made of round wire, would the sharp edge be only where the base (grounded) electrode is sheared off ? It's easy to note the wear (erosion) on spark plug electrodes, would it help to dress the edge of the ground electrodes as they become dubbed with use ?

I think you will find that to be normal. When the car sets for a month or two without being driven the residual magnetism tends to diminish. If you run it for a minute or two it usually will show a charge. It has to charge for a few seconds to build up the magnetism after which it will run at the charge it was originally set.

Clutch pressure ring

So, I removed the engine from my 26 coupe to find the source of a slight engine knock. In the process I took my transmission apart to install some better triple gears to make the transmission a little quieter and to install a new wide brake drum. I discovered that the holes in my driven plate where the pins for the clutch pressure ring stick out...

Or you could cut some copper pipe & push it in the holes, then swedge the ends over so it doesn't fall out.

Darel:
You asked a question on another forum and did not receive an answer. 10 years ago the tour left Dearborn and headed southwest to Hannibal, MO.
If you want to join them for a day, that will be a bit of a hike from Minnesota.
Dave
Wish I had the time and money to go with the tour from Atlantic to Pacific.

In attempting to get a 1932 spark plug tester working, I've found one of the transformer terminals broken off. The little wire remaining is so tiny and so short that I doubt I'll be able to solder on some kind of replacement terminal. So I went shopping online. I thought it would be easy to find the proper transformer, but not so. I wonder if...

Duey, a purely resistive load is one that has no inductance or capacitance. A good example is an incandescent light bulb or a heating element.
It's hard to avoid getting too technical here, but if one measures the current and voltage fed into a resistive load on AC, using an oscilloscope, the current and voltage waveforms will seen to be in phase....

just a followup on my piston ring project. the gaps on my old rings were .070 compression and .150 on the oil rings.
the rings are not worn thin so i am not sure what went on there. i ordered some .010 over rings from chaffins. i slid one
in the bore and it tight with no gap as it should be so i will grind the gaps to about .012 and install them....

I looked at 5 more CI pistons, 5 that came from same engine, oil holes, the 5th, oil holes. So that makes 9 CI with oil holes.

I relined the brake shoes and now the wheel is real tight. I was thinking about removing 3-4 of the brake lining on both ends or grinding the brake cam thinner. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Last post
Richard, it is important that the running clearance between the brake shoe and the drum be set with the car in top gear, so that there is no drag when cruising down the road. This means adjusting the rods to suit. As a result the clearance will be greater in neutral and will then actuate the shoes as the lever is pulled further back and the...

I bought a hand crank rebuild kit which includes a new bushing, pin, and two springs. I installed one spring with the end in the small hole near the crank bend so it keeps the crank from engaging accidentally. But what do I do with the other one? It is about an inch long and the diameter is too small to even fit over the main crank arm. It looks...

Lang's has the complete kit.
Remove the old pin that was riveted. Then clean up the bore at the end of the crank handle, insert assembly and re-rivet

drive shaft spool machining, has anyone tried this?

Has anyone successfully machined a groove for the earlier drive shaft into the later spool? I am finding it is not co-operating and due to the various thickness I may cut the flange nearly entirely.
If there's a better method that doesn't require altering the drive shaft much if at all please let me know.

Do you think having the focus screw at twelve o'clock has anything to do with the fact the headlights are magneto, or just a coincidence?
Last post
Ford provided 7 different styles head lamps for the T, and different mfg. too.
So the 12 O'clock adj. screw location was used on the early electric in 1915, but then can be found on headlamp buckets up to 1920 or so depending on the style of headlamp.

Many years ago when I was in high school, I met Ralf Moody (Holeman and Moody).

I remember his telling us how to move the suspension anchor points to get a better front end geometry and to remove a few pounds of weight.
i was recently doing a web search and...

Dan: Those are not labels. They are the wooden blocks inside the coil.
I want to know if anyone knows who made them and when. Looks like they used old parts in a clear plastic box. Also has a new type cap that is kind of hidden. Thanks, Dan.

I’m pretty sure it belongs to Peter Skeres (I’m sure I misspelled his last name) who lives near Conroe.
I think he’s building the speedster for his son.

to address concerns with the new format or not, but it would be a great place to start!
