Bauer ID tags
by
mtntee20 » Sun Feb 03, 2019 6:30 pm
In March of 2018, Victor M. asked for interest in Bauer steering wheel ID tags. Does anyone know the status of Victor's project? I have not heard any more about it since then. The link below is to the 2018 thread.
I would like to purchase a tag if he is/has/will be making them.
Good Luck,
Terry

Jess Blaker camshafts from the 70's

I have a camshaft in my Speedster that my Dad and I got from Jess Blaker of Turlock, CA in the mid seventies. The engine is all apart for a refresh after 40 plus years. The cam has worn well still looks good. The peak has a nice radius not a sharp point, so I think this means it has some duration. The lift is .240. Appears to be a new stick not a...

Pictures. With more skilled hands than mine the lift appears to be more like .260, the thought also was the cam was wearing as it should. Frank I also thought when I measured the lift it seemed small. It never occurred to me at the time or in later years, the few times when I saw Jess to ask him how the cam came about. The last time I saw this cam...

Can someone tell me when the Chickasha swap meet is? Also, is there anyone from the Metro Detroit area heading down this year? I may have some fenders to pick up and would gladly pay to have someone get them for me, as I cannot make it this year.
Last post
Thanks, Tom! If you do happen to go or if you know of someone from the area who will be please let me know. I am in the process of buying some fenders and the seller said he could bring them to Chickasha to save on shipping costs. I would be happy to pay you or someone else a gratuity to pick them up for me.

I had a bad camshaft and several valves vere burnt so I replaced them . Since the motor is out I wanted to readjust the valves. I have modern adjustable lifters so it should be easy, lol. There were several discussions ab out this in the past on the forum, if you get real bored Google MTFCA Valve Adjustment. One of the key tips I gathered from that in the past was from Frank Harris:
The adjustable lifter has a 1/4 28 thread and that gives you a thousandth of an inch travel for every 10 degrees wrench rotation. Take the vavle...

I just finished rebuilding my hog's head this evening. Looks nice.....new parts inside, auxiliary oiler fixture on and everything painted. Scott, the pedal cams are all correctly installed, although to be honest your comment about little to no slop in the cam surfaces has me wondering. I does take a bit of forward motion before the pedals cam outward....but that amount of slop is very uniform.

Exhaust pipe

First post
This post goes with the one on the exhaust nut wrench.
One reason the exhaust nut gets loose is because someone uses a clamp on the front end of the muffler where the pipe attaches. It is best to leave it without a clamp so that the pipe is free to rotate or move in and out of the muffler as the car vibrates and twists when driving. A clamp under...
Last post
The cast end mufflers were meant to be a sliding fit, however the pressed steel end type never was. The original pipe was one piece with the muffler and the mounting hanger on the rear of it was the flex part. You can install the pressed end muffler without a clamp as there should be enough exhaust pipe tube inserted to work without a lot of...

Okay, I would like to understand this or either something is wrong with my low speed band and its adjustment. The clutch should be disengaged just after you press the pedal down and the low band should be be tight on the low drum when the pedal is at 1 to 1-1/2 inches above the floor.

Its been awhile since I rebuilt a T engine. The current main bearing shims appeared to be made wrong to me. But when I looked in the original 1928 parts catalog, the shims are like the current repros. I remember the shims I used to use, had a small ear on the inside of the shim, that sat between the babbitt at the ends of the bearing. I thought...
Last post
You can cut the A rear main shim and use it in a T engine as well. It will be a little shorter than a T rear main shim as the A rear main is 3 long from thrust to thrust, but that won't hurt anything.

An Old Ford Sign From England

I recently bought this old ford sign at an estate sale.
No one there knew anything about it, except the deceased couple had an extensive collection of antiques and traveled all over to get them.
They specialized in English pottery and may have traveled there to buy some of their items.
Could anyone provide me with any additional information on...

Dane, I have that same sign. I found it in my wife's cousin's antiques/general store outside of Killarney when we visited Ireland in 1996.

Valve and push rod reamers

I've got a pretty extensive set of reamers left by a relative years ago.
When taking valves and tappets 0.015 oversized how much larger is the reamer itself compared to the valve or tappet?
If installing a 0.327 stem valve, would you use a .3275 reamer or a .328? Same for the tappets.
Would you use a reamer that is 0.0005 or 0.001 oversized....
Last post
I agree with Bob on not turning them backwards, plus you want to keep them cutting while rotating. If done by hand in the car using long support pilots, use enough pressure on the tap wrench to keep cutting with each rotation. The hole will be to size that way...if casually turned and little material removed, there will be many more revolutions of...

Getting the right Horseless Carriage apparel can be a challenge. The most difficult part is the hat. For that, there are a number of options depending on whether you only want to use the hat for piloting your Model T or other Brass-Era car, or would like to use it in everyday life. For dedicated Edwardian motoring, you...

Check this one out - located near Asheville NC, Chuck and June are active old car folks - Chuck is President of AACA (2018) and they have had a vintage clothing business for many years. They usually set up displays at tours and meets, and have a big display at Hershey in the Red Field, in brass alley. Nice folks and great stuff.

I've tried to determine what the last name on this parts book is for a few years. Maybe someone has an idea. It looks like O. J. Hos______? Below (if I can load them) are a few pics. Also included is a link to the Model K parts book, with the front cover and name.
Thank you for any suggestions,

Ted, you got it! Thank you.
Onon J. Hoshaw was born in 1890, and worked for a Ford dealer(s) in the Kansas City and Salina KS. area. He would have been 17 years old when the 1907 K (manual) came out. Now the question is, did he or his family own a Model K? Or did he pick up an old manual as a Ford employee at some point. The state of Kansas was...

I rebuilt the carburetor on the Jack Benny Maxwell a couple years ago. It had a very interesting idle fuel supply/adjustment that had been added in the 50's to get it to run better. I made a new system based on that design and have since made two more for similar carbs.
It was never actually owned by Benny, the TV station leased it from the owner...

I'm faced with having to remove both the pedal and cam on my low speed shaft, then replace the shaft with a new one. I attacked the cam pin first, grinding down the head and attempted to heat, then drive the pin out......it won't budge, so it looks like drilling it out is the only solution. So, what size are these pins? 3/16 or some decimal size?...
Last post
George, that's why I go up in drill sizes in small increments. If you check each hole you can keep track of the drill opening up the side of the pin, and stop before damage is done. I learned this trick by doing as you did, except i was working on a handbrake lever and cross shaft.

Oil oozing from head bolt
Replies: 9

First post
After a 2 hour drive in a friends 15 touring, I noticed oil coming from right under the front left head bolt
I didn't get a chance to see if the bolt could be retightened, however there didn't appear to be oil burn in the exhaust when running. The engine appears to be running smooth.
Any suggestions please? I've been wondering about possible...
Last post
That happened to me, it was a stripped thread in the block, could not get the head bolt tight enough.
However, the head gasket didn't blow and i didn't lose compression. It ran just fine until the next valve grind where i put a home made helicoil thing in the hole and it survives just fine.
Don't sweat over it yet.

Today my Dad and I went to the Cabin Fever Expo in Lebanon, PA. It’s a model engineering show with all kinds of scale hit and miss, steam engines, etc. on display, most of them running. It’s the kind of show that anyone on this forum would certainly appreciate and enjoy.

I believe the Judging Guidelines now state that the bayonet style can was used pretty much throughout the T era; the threaded spouts are Model A. The double script can was apparently the first style used, around 1912-13 or so.

Top Boot Pattern

I wonder if anyone has a pattern that I could use to have a boot cover made for my 1917 Touring. I have a 30+ year top that had never been unpacked from the box that I plan to install at some point, but I want to replace the interior with correct upholstery (probably from Classtique) first. In the meantime, I have bare top bows to hide and when...

Duh! Gee Brian, I didn't think to ask.... If I can borrow it I'll have my upholstery lady clone it for me.
Thanks!

I am helping a friend with there Model T and discovered that the steering gear ball had the wrong key and there was play. Since that is the only part I need I figured I could go to the hardware store. So I looked up the size and was surprised that I came up with two dead ends.

Wow! You guys have all been very helpful! Awesome sketch Don!
I plan to go to the hardware store and buy a 1/4 x 7/8 . Then I will then grind it to size.
Thanks so much!

Great photo of an almost new (1911 plates) early car!
I believe Bob and Wayne have it, a 1910.
Appears to have the interrupted ribs on the running boards.
Nice view of John Brown 15 headlights and Model 60 side lamps.
Thank you, one of the reasons I followed the old site.

My Grandfather's car was featured on the front of the-we think- Model T Times magazine in the early 1970's. It may have been Vintage Ford but we are pretty certain it was Model T Times. Attached is one of the pictures that was professionally taken for the photo shoot of the 1921 Center Door which is the car featured on the cover. This photo hung...

It seems we had a friend from Down Under building a similar two engine overhead. The engines had sequential numbers.
What became of that one?
Thanks for that.

That is a very nice 1915 runabout. I see a fellow sitting in the car, high collar, appropriate tie, collar clip (there was a term for those, I can't think of it right off, I have a couple of them). Car has 1915 New York plate on the front. Looks very new. Perfect in nearly every detail (even the black centers of the hubcaps), with one minor...

I realize that I am going to tied to the whipping post for this, but I really don't care. My subject line says it all. I believe that as a club, we should start encouraging preservation instead of restoration, when correct, original cars are discovered. Over the past few years, I have seen four, good, original brass cars have a grinder taken to...

The best of both worlds for me is when I get this 12 restored or over restored and park it next to the unrestored 13 or drive them both.

I have always wondered why there is so little advertising trying to sell Alemite-Zerk fittings for Model Ts as aftermarket items. Even though they were around for some time during the T era. They became standard equipment on the Model As, and sometimes show up on Model Ts put on by previous owners thru the years. But again very little advertising...

The Artist's rendition on the card shows the forged L front shackles & r.r. mounted below the perch so somewhere between '19 & '23 according to the Encyclopedia so assume it to be in that era.

I have a project car that am working on; 1921 coupe from an estate. Previous owner (deceased) had put in a new ignition switch, probably 12 years ago. I can not find the key for this switch amongst his part boxes. Called Langs and they said all new switches were keyed #55 since about 1960. So I ordered a #55 key on Friday and got it today; great...

Can a truck ruckstell be converted to a car ruckstell?
I have no experience with these units but know there are two different rear ends.

Ryan- simple question. Is this truck a Model T truck or a Model TT truck?
