Gord, I just wanted to tell you I like your car and liked the article too. I respect and applaud your decision to keep this car as a '16 instead of making it into a '15, and also your decision to add a few things to make it a nicer driver car like the roll-up rear window.
Best wishes,

Very interesting question! First of all, were the patent plates supplied by Ford, or the body maker. If by the body maker, then it's anyone's guess. I've seen the large plate on cars as late as March 1913. BTW, Randall Anderson had a set of stamps made that duplicate the style of numbers that Ford used.

Last post
My understanding is, the Ford Model A ring gear can be used (worm drive) but has to be machined to fit the case. The gear is just a little too wide. Where it mounts in the diffy is ok, but you need to take off about 1/16 to 1/8 off both sides of the gear area. Of course you would still need the TT drive gear.

I have read that prior to the release of the Model A, Edsel Ford commissioned a handful of 6 cylinder model T's. I have a couple of photos of one and would like to know more of the history of them.

Single Barrel Bridgeport Tire Pumps

I recently purchased a single barrel Bridgeport tire pump. I thought it was the correct one for the 1915 era Model T. Now I'm not sure. I've noticed it does NOT have the Ford script on the bottom. Does anyone know what year(s) the single-barrel Bridgeport pump was supplied with new Model T Fords? Does it have to have the Ford script on the bottom,...

Yes. It takes three 45 gram cartridges to fill a 30 x 3.5 inch tire to 60 psi. The cartridges get really cold when they discharge, so you need to wear gloves or wrap the cartridge with a towel when you discharge it to keep from freezing your hands.
I stopped carrying tire pumps on my bicycles, now I carry 16 gram cartridges and an inflator. A...

Just thought I would try out the new forum. We are still looking for a line shaft driven vertical milling machine. Nice work on the museum machine shop. You may already be familiar with the American Precision Museum in VT. As Allan mentioned the Keyserts work very well. They use standard tap sizes for the outer thread & have 2 thicknesses for the insert. The thin wall 7/16 insert has a 9/16 outer thread so the 1/2 hole could be drilled out to make it work. The key in using these is to follow the instructions carefully, once installed they will not come loose.

Just seen an ad in the new AACA mag. Coker tire now has 440/450 R21 tires for sale. I’ll be needing tires soon, but just doesn’t seem right to have radials on the old truck.
The brand is American Classic, not listed on their site yet.

Kerry, why would radials need zero camber? I would think any tire/axle design would need camber to counter act the inner and outer diameter of the turning radius. What difference would radial tires make? Just curious. Dave

Last post
Yes you could use heat on that Ford tough steel. But surprised the lugs are bent!
Most times a little gap of the riveted steel band to those lugs is unlikely to cause much issue. Just do try to get the new wood linings to protrude out the end of the metal band.

I recently sealed up my differential with Permatex Gear Oil Gasket Maker. I did a little experiment at the same time, applying some between two pieces of aluminum sheet metal and clamping them together. The sealant is supposed to cure in 24 hours but the fine print says it may take longer under cold and dry conditions.
I don't leave the heat on...
Last post
According to the pkg, this sealant is designed to be used in a gear oil situation. Gear oil tends to break down RTV and the gear oil is to be used where gear oil is present.
This document tells it all. With RTV I had a pretty good seal with slight leakage. With Gear Oil Gasket Maker I have had zero leakage.

Dan, you are correct about the fit of the cups. i could not edit the first post and corrected the advice in the second. Because the wire wheel hubs are thin where the outer cup goes, they are often stressed so that the outer cup is just a slide in fit. They need to be carefully inspected and a trial fit done to really be safe.

By the way, stay away from those spiral (un)easy outs. :) All they are good for is removing bolts that have been broken off from side pressure, not ones that have twisted off. All they do is lock the bolt in tighter as you try to remove it, or twist off making it pretty much impossible to drill it out. The square type easy outs are much better....

Several suggestions above regarding penetrating oils are good for durability and

I don't think a family of four could carry themselves and ALL that stuff on a trip. Not in a Model T. The wooden board alone is 4.5 feet.

This wonderful old home movie, updated to a more modern format, was just posted on the AACA website. There aren't many Ts. The games are fun, but the one of driving over logs while balancing a tray of drinks looks to be hard on the cars. There are two fires - one simulated, the other clearly not. These were just 30-year-old used cars then;...

Yes, thanks for posting this Gil. I had seen a poor version of it a few years ago and have wanted to look at it again. It gives a priceless sense of how it was for hobbyists putting 30+ year old cars through their paces. Ya can't see that just anywhere.
Wonderful.

Splash Apron Measurement Needed.
I know this is a strange question to ask. Can a very kind person tell me the length of the longest part (front to back) of a 1912-16 Touring or Roadster splash apron ? I think thows years were the same lenght.
Thanks much in advance.

Has anyone see this series ? There are a lot of t's in this show. The period starts in the brass era and goes thru the twenties. Lots of brass t's and tt's Even a few town cars. Lots of other cars whose brands I am not sure of. It's fun watching the show just to try and identify cars. I'm pretty sure the main car the family uses is a brass era...

Vic and Lorrie attended the Florida Winter Tour last year.
He bought the Stromberg OF carb I donated for the fund raiser sale.
We visited quite a bit on the tours there and at the dinners.
Late last year I tried to contact him, with no luck, to see if he had used the carb.
Another friend told me he heard Vic had passed away.
I could not find...

I understand that prior to installing the U-joint ball into the back of the hogshead you should pack it full of grease....my question, what kind of grease? For my Hyatt bearings I used a NLGI 1 red bearing grease... would that be too thin (soft) for the U-joint? I can see where grease is likely to make it's way out around to ball-shaped end of the...

I personally like Lubri Plate, I have used it for everything in this world since it's introduction way back. I think what impressed me about it was that it stayed where you put it, and using it in the Rice Fields and in the Oilfields made a believer out of me. As to the U Joint grease, I packed the housing as full as I could get it, a long time...

I decided to CC my head today. Even though I used a very primitive procedure, the doctors said Ill be OK (or at least as OK as I ever was) :)
I have heard that the Rajo 4 valve heads are the same CC or compression ratio as a stock head. But to my eye it just looked to be larger. So to ease my mind I did an old school CC test. I leveled the...

Doing a frame off restoration of a 27 depot hack. Got a wooden slat leatherette top, so I'd have to figure out a way to make the wiring look good, but I'm thinking of putting one or two 6v dome lights in for nighttime ease in getting in and out. Switch controlled from the drivers compartment, no refrigerator type buttons on the doors, but I might...

My first thought would be to make them self-contained and battery powered, all the while hoping nobody ever asks where the wires are.

Just finished rebuilding Ruckstell axel. Assembled using Ultra Black as a sealer between the two halves. Finished and installed in car. Now I have a nasty oil leak at the bottom of the housing from where the two halves join. I can see it oozing about an inch or so along the bottom of the housing. What can I use to seal this up?
Last post
This doesn't sound right to me if you were able to place a shim (?) 1 long between the halves and seal the outside of it. One side has a ridge and the other has a recess and they should fit together tight. From what I read, the halves are not engaged together properly. If this is true one half could be distorted from some type of damage and no...

Due to the heating process of pouring Babbitt, is t best to machine the cylinders and deck surface before or after the Babbitt is poured? I can think of reasons to justify both ways but what's more widely accepted?
Last post
I have mine bored prior to pouring the bearings, but leave the final honing until after the bearings are poured, mainly to ensure all is clean before building.

Why would someone ground the generator on a running engine ?
Last post
Yep,
A generator must have a load of some sort on it, or it will self destruct by overheating itself. Ordinarily, the battery is its load. If the cut out fails to energize and close the circuit upon start-up, the generator will burn itself up. Same for if you take the battery out of the system, unless you do as shown in the photo. If you need to...

More modern engines with pressurized oil system, filters, hydraulic lifters, etc. I have flushed numerous times with fair results.
I would avoid it like the plague on a T engine...just my opinion.

Can anyone post a couple of pictures and/or some accurate measurements of a false cam that is used to set a K.R. Wilson Line Boring Frame??
TIA
Last post
Brent, yes they are a simple lathe turned item. The only two critical measurements are the .999 shaft diameter, and the 1.375 diameter of the collar. The .999 is the size of the hole in the rear of the block for the camshaft brass bushing, and the 1.375 is the size of the hole in the block for the front camshaft bearing shell. Those measurements...
