Thanks Kevin, good advice.
I have a 28 Chev engine that will be the doner for the rods.
The crankshaft I will be using is from another engine and is ready to grind.
It seems the guys at Chevrolet did things a bit different than Ford. The rods have a spacer about .125” thick between the rod and cap. On this engine there are no shims. It seems...

How does the stromberg hand the mixture? I do not understand how to hook it up
Any Stromberg OF users out there, Can I see your controls and how you hooked them in??
Thanks

I'm running two OF carbs. I used a regular choke cable with a knob that looked like the T control inside. Standard throttle control. Great carbs.

How much backlash through differential is ok?

Hello.
I own a Touring 1916. It is currently placed on supports, so wheels don't get a flat spot over winter.
When turning one rear wheel forward and backward until the other one starts rotating in other direction, how much backlash is allowed along circumference? I assume this is also some indicator for wear of gears inside differential ?...

Hi Rainer,
I would be inclined to agree with Dan's measurement ( that is inline with the rear I just put together ) Take the 2578E Housing plug out &
install a bolt with the same size thread & run it up firmly against the u-joint so it will not turn & test again. If you get the same result then
I would be inclined to think that the issue is in the...

With the frame and the engine being about a million numbers apart, that could not have been the engine that your car left the factory with. It is the correct engine, as it has the provision for the frame braces that were used in the improved car.

I can't get my head lights to work on my 1927 coupe. I have installed new wiring and have checked and rechecked it against the Model T Wiring Diagram. I have installed the new parts per the diagram on page 166 of Lang's 2021 catalog. I have had the switch restored.
I would appreciate any thoughts on what may be the problem.

The ground terminal was only required if you were using a real Magneto for the sparks.
Those Magnetos require a ground to turn off the sparks and stop the engine.
Not many are in use anymore, but some switches still have the ground terminal.

Should I use the 600 wt tar-like gear oil for an aux trans or will 140 wt be ok? Is it best to start the car in gear or can I get to high or low after it's running? Helps having a true neutral starting a cold car in cold weather, don't have to get the jack out :)
Last post
We have, like Ed, run 600W in our Warford and Chicago transmissions in several different cars over the years. Last year, I decided to try a synthetic gear oil in the Chicago transmission. The product we ended up with was Heavy Shockproof made by Redline. The trans runs noticeably cooler and quieter than with the 600W.

Band springs need to be long so pressure is placed on the band in an outward direction so the adjusting nut and lock washer are always engaged and will not come loose and drop into the engine causing serious damage to both engine and occupants.

Anyone have ideas how to tighten the encircled nut.
It is 5/8 across the flats and a normal -marked.jpg 5/8 end wrench is very ackward.

Craig,
Below is a link from a previous forum thread with some more info on 1913 - 14 tops. The Ruckstell is such a great accessory that it is the only one ever endorsed by Henry Ford for use in the model T. If you look at the cars on any national tour the majority of them will have one, and also some kind of auxiliary brakes.

Keystock is available from many sources, usually in foot long lengths. All you need is the size of the stock. Model T;s use 1/4 square, TT's most likely bigger, perhaps 5/16 . Just measure either the axle or hub keyways.
Hope this helps.

Engine Casting Mark VS Engine Serial Number
Replies: 14
by
J1MGOLDEN » Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:40 pm
First post
A 1924 I'm working on now has an Engine Serial Number that dates it to an April 29, 1924 Made Date.
The numbers are not uniform in line or density which suggests a new engine block from the Ford Plant.
The block also has an Engine Casting Circle that suggest a 10 - 10 - 26 Casting Date.
Would that be rather late for having a casting date?
Last post
That 71 was scratched into the sand mold by hand after the pattern was drawn out. I retired as a molder/core maker from a foundry after almost 30 working. We used to scratch dates into pump molds before closing the mold up for pouring.

I've read about people using all kinds of things from aluminum, modern panel board, to plastic.
The package tray was cloth on steel or wood board. But what about the sides?

This was printed on the original panels of my 27.

Does anyone know of any better top-installation videos other than the one made by the lady at Classtique a number of years ago? It’s so bad (sorry) and hard to watch. The black fabric in a dark garage videoed with a dirty lens on the cell phone…. I’ve watched it a dozen times and read the instruction sheet way more times than that as I push my way...

Hey John. We met on the Mystic Seaport Tour when we all stayed at the Inn At Woodstock a few years back and your Model A chewed up it's timing gear. I did get the DVD of Vince installing a T top and have been watching it as I work thru this project. Him talking to the camera with a mouth full of tacks amazes me! Quite the craftsman.

I can easily raise and lower the 2 man top on my late ‘13 Touring by myself.
First, I unhook the straps that connect to the windshield. Then I get into the backseat and move the most forward bow down to the lower hole on the second bow . Next I move the second bow back to the extra hole on the third bow and lower the hole top onto the top...

A former Ford dealer building near here used to have a single gas pump out front. On the side of the building, Gas 14 cents can still be seen on the brickwork.

I am new to Model T and to MTFCA, having just bought a 1926 coupe out of 30+ year storage last month. I am going through it system by system before i try to run it. Electrics all sorted/checked out, and i tested the starter (on the car). It turns the engine just fine, but makes a clattering sound when engaged. I pulled the bendix cover and watched...

Thanks, Jim. Yes, there seems to be something missing on the brush end of the starter. I think I’ll machine something out of brass to fill the void for now and see how that works. Andrew

The interior cardboard like material in a touring car is called cowboard to my knowledge.
Im interested in where you can buy a similar material today
My car does not have any.
What have you used? Where did you get it?
Thanks!

RE: covered door and cowl panels - tourings and roadsters
It depends on when the car left the factory.
Originally, the panel boards were covered with leatherette fabric.
Sometime during production, the panel boards had a finished side which dispensed for the need to cover them with leatherette fabric.
I don't know when the transition occurred...

Thought I would share some pictures of the coil box that will be going on the Delivery car. I opted for a Kingston repo box that takes the later coils. I used the LMF Cherry stain and a Cognac to darken it up and give it a little more color. I finished it with 5 coats of Helmsman clear gloss

Valve cover retainers
On the 26 motor did they use bolts or studs to hold the side cover on ?

Parts books suggest 1926 were studs & 1927 were nickle head bolts. BUT 1926 could be/were replaced with the later version

Here’s a wrecking yard photo taken supposedly in 1918.
There are suppose to be 2 men some where looking around according to the photo caption.
At first it seems like a flood photo but don’t think so.
Would love to have seen that back in the day!
Looking closely at it it’s pretty close to 1918 or not much older than that.

If I recall correctly, Vern Campbell used to manufacture what he claimed was a reproduction Exhaust Pipe that was made exactly to the factory prints. Did anyone take over his manufacturing of these, -or are the others available from vendors correctly shaped too?
TIA

There was from my understanding 3 exhaust pipes that Ford used?
4037- style that was used 09-12-early 13. Pipe slid into exhaust manifold. Larry Smith made a run of these a while back.
4307B- new style 1913-20 now with a flared end to late up to the exhaust manifold. Larry seems to indicate that there were some variations in 14? Larry perhaps...

It came with the original wood the PO had saved all these years and a few boxes of parts.

That said, the Model T could and still can go more places that most wouldn't DARE go in a modern 4WD!
A couple sections of that video...

I need help from someone who has a Kelsey demountable wheel. I'm doing some research related to the design of reproduction rims and need to know the width of a Kelsey felloe. Tim, I believe the wear register on the inside edge of the rim is allowing the rim to go further onto the felloe, resulting in the rolled part of the rim making light contact with the felloe. After a 100 or so years of use it is bound to happen. I have a Hayes wire wheel where that wider inner land on the felloe is worn so thin it has allowed the...
