Every few years in Western Australia we head for a place called Lake Perkolilli. An event is run called the Red Dust Revival. Many speedsters show up from all over Australia. At the end of the day at the last event, we ran an Autopolo contest with the Ts. As always, it was great fun. A chap, Des Lewis, has just posted a short video on YouTube of...

If I want to switch from ball bearings to Timkens, do I need to remove the inner race that’s on the threaded spindle and if so, how?
Last post
The inner ball bearing cone on the spindle can with care, be cut off the spindle with a welders torch. I've done this several times with rusted bearing cones without damage to the spindle itself.

Guys -
We have purchased the inner rear axle neoprene seals and have encountered a problem installing them. I have never installed these before, so I am a neoprene seal virgin. Be gentle with me. :)
There were no instructions or diagram included with the seals indicating the direction the rubber seal is supposed to face. Logic tells me that the...

Marshall
Instructions may help, for this seal the metal washer is for the Hyatt bearing race to butt against, just like the washer for the outer felt seal. So metal out ;)
A long pick with slight hook can grab that seal to remove, may have to pierce the plastic, likely wrecking that seal. :(

The 'G' float is larger in diameter than the 'NH' that has brass floats available.
Some fuels seem to destroy those composite floats!
Does anyone sell a replacement brass 'G' larger diameter float?

I have a 26 touring body on an earlier frame and would like to switch it on to a 26 frame that I have; some time this summer. I removed the body from my 24 Coupe completely by myself and reinstalled it the opposite way by myself.
To simply put it I removed all the body to frame bolts and anything else. I jacked up the main body and moved saw horses under it and set it down on the saw horses.
I rolled out the chassis from underneath the body by the engine side. After...

If the car has all the original 1915 wiring, eg no starter or generator, constant loss electrical system for the coils and lights, then you can safely hook it up either way... in fact, it's better for the points of the coils if you reverse it every so often. I'll even throw another ringer in here - if this is the case, and you normally run on mag,...

Brooks, I can hardly believe how good and flush the solit in your rims lines up. You are fortunate to have such good rims. Usually they are a bit mangled/hammered/miss aligned through years of being worked on by tyre fitters, some of whom were not well versed in the correct fitting procedures.

We have been lucky to have found an accessory gas gauge for our T and used it for years. It has started to leak and will need to be resealed. It is a glass tube that is near the passenger door hinge on our 26 touring. Our gas tank is below the windshield and the gauge has worked well.
Since it will need to come apart, I would like to find...

Hello.
I own a Touring 1916. It is currently placed on supports, so wheels don't get a flat spot over winter.
When turning one rear wheel forward and backward until the other one starts rotating in other direction, how much backlash is allowed along circumference? I assume this is also some indicator for wear of gears inside differential ?...

I would be inclined to agree with Dan's measurement ( that is inline with the rear I just put together ) Take the 2578E Housing plug out &
install a bolt with the same size thread & run it up firmly against the u-joint so it will not turn & test again. If you get the same result then
I would be inclined to think that the issue is in the...

I would appreciate any thoughts on what may be the problem.

The ground terminal was only required if you were using a real Magneto for the sparks.
Those Magnetos require a ground to turn off the sparks and stop the engine.
Not many are in use anymore, but some switches still have the ground terminal.

Should I use the 600 wt tar-like gear oil for an aux trans or will 140 wt be ok? Is it best to start the car in gear or can I get to high or low after it's running? Helps having a true neutral starting a cold car in cold weather, don't have to get the jack out :)

We have, like Ed, run 600W in our Warford and Chicago transmissions in several different cars over the years. Last year, I decided to try a synthetic gear oil in the Chicago transmission. The product we ended up with was Heavy Shockproof made by Redline. The trans runs noticeably cooler and quieter than with the 600W.

Band springs need to be long so pressure is placed on the band in an outward direction so the adjusting nut and lock washer are always engaged and will not come loose and drop into the engine causing serious damage to both engine and occupants.

After having browsed eBay and this sites classified, it turned out that I could find one to a good price just 10 miles from home. So no need to import from US, shipping and customs fees and what have you.

It turns out the 1/16 petcocks seems to be made of unobtanium, so now I have purchased a simple 1/16 NPT plug to just close the hole so I can get the carburator assembled and get the engine started again.

Happy New Year.
As you know, it has been an ongoing subject for decades that the true colors of the Model T are, basically, a mystery. Here is a color “autochrome” photograph taken of Mark Twain in 1908 and a frame from the first color movie from 1902 by Edward Turner. Why then, are there no period photos taken of Model T’s back when they were...

Pre 1930 color photographs are rare. There was no easy way to make a color print of an Autochrome plate or even duplicate them. Autochrome plates were very expensive and quite a bit more work. Here's a link to an pretty good article about Autochromes:

Anyone have ideas how to tighten the encircled nut.
It is 5/8 across the flats and a normal -marked.jpg 5/8 end wrench is very ackward.

Was dealing with this today. Don't seem to have that wrench in my collection, so a small metric adjustable and little turns did the trick.

Craig,
Below is a link from a previous forum thread with some more info on 1913 - 14 tops. Specifically, it refers to a brass strap that is made from shim stock and runs from the front to rear bow inside the pad and helps keep the top material from tearing when the top is stretched into place. When we replaced the top on my '13 touring, we put...

Has anyone installed trailer brakes on a T era camp trailer??. I am looking at a trailer that uses Ford 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. Same as Model A and flathead V-8 era wheels. I will be pulling it with my 27 touring. My car has 21 inch wire wheels. So my thoughts are put 21 inch Model A wheels on the trailer, so the wheels look alike. The Model A...

Donnie, you have the upgraded driveline with your Warford. An overdrive and underdrive are ideal.
If you were here, I could direct you to S.A. Trailer and Chassis, and they could make the axle any length you like, and drill the brake drums to suit your wheels. Check out the electric brake controller I posted. Both my moderns have them. All you see...

The Ruckstell is such a great accessory that it is the only one ever endorsed by Henry Ford for use in the model T. If you look at the cars on any national tour the majority of them will have one, and also some kind of auxiliary brakes.

If this the fact, I need to change the gear myself and cannot figure out how to remove it from the shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Doesnt matter. The only important consideration is the counterweight position on the gear if moved/removed.
The spring loaded pin must ride on the top of one of the threads.

I put one of these oil lines on my ‘24 Touring. Like any projects, a little thought & consideration goes a long way. When placing the inlet end casting on the hogshead, don’t just go by the paper template to locate the holes to be drilled into the hogshead. Locate one middle hole, drill, tap, then install one screw to hold in place. Then...

I have replaced timing gears. These were really old. The big one was fibre and had very narrow teeth. A 1/8 inch drill fitted nicely between the teeth and I wonder why the fibre gear wasn’t stripped.

Now I have a question concerning the...

Richard, I wondered where that post went!
The only time I have ever encountered timing gear lash problems was when the machinist was off a tad when setting the distance between the camshaft and crankshaft when line boring the bearings. Last post
Keystock is available from many sources, usually in foot long lengths. All you need is the size of the stock. Model T;s use 1/4 square, TT's most likely bigger, perhaps 5/16 . Just measure either the axle or hub keyways.
Hope this helps.
