I'm pretty sure that Herm's procedure shows the triple gear in his lathe where he is facing the bushing thrust surface and then adding a chamfer to the bore- not boring the bushing for fit. He does this in a separate step using a fixture and a reamer. Boring the bushings to size is best practice as John states above, but a word of warning when...

Engine Casting Mark VS Engine Serial Number
Replies: 14
by
J1MGOLDEN » Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:40 pm
First post
A 1924 I'm working on now has an Engine Serial Number that dates it to an April 29, 1924 Made Date.
The numbers are not uniform in line or density which suggests a new engine block from the Ford Plant.
The block also has an Engine Casting Circle that suggest a 10 - 10 - 26 Casting Date.
Would that be rather late for having a casting date?
Last post
That 71 was scratched into the sand mold by hand after the pattern was drawn out. I retired as a molder/core maker from a foundry after almost 30 working. We used to scratch dates into pump molds before closing the mold up for pouring.

It depends on when the car left the factory.
Originally, the panel boards were covered with leatherette fabric.
Sometime during production, the panel boards had a finished side which dispensed for the need to cover them with leatherette fabric.

Removal of an Engine With an Aluminum Head

J1MGOLDEN » Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:28 pm

Are aluminum heads strong enough to screw two bolts into the spark plug holes and use them to lift the engine from the Model T chassis?
This aluminum head is the older R. G. Reeder High Head.
Has anyone tried this arrangement with success?
Last post
A 14 mm sparkplug tightened to 15 ft-lb torque generates a clamping force of about 3000 lb. This presents no problem with an aluminum head. A 1/2 in pipe thread is even stronger. According to Joe Bell, a complete engine and transmission assembly weights about or less than 500 lb.
Pull on the spark plug threads without fever
Incidently, the...

I have found gear oil to work well, I have even saved it when I change the rear end oil.( if it's clear of metal flakes) the most important

If your asking where to start when you have a T frame and a pile of body parts the easiest way to begin figuring out where the body framework goes and where it’s attached the best way is this:
Assuming your T frame has been gone over for straightness and repair use two saw horses and lay the bare frame on them.

I have decided to have a starter put on my 1916 coupelet. As I am old and can no longer do that kind of work, I am having a friend in the Model T club, who does work on cars for other people, do the work. Along with installing the starter, he will install a correct 1916 steering column, the magneto horn, reverse the cams for the parking brake as...

I probably should get back at my front drive starter project for my 13. I am using a Subaru starter because it turns the correct direction (the gear is at the front). A one wire alternator to keep the wires simple and a cog belt drive connection from the alternator to the crank.
I better get it finished soon!!

Has anyone tried using a hot glue gun to fill old tack holes?
It would seem to be much easier & faster.
But would it be as effective as using toothpicks?

1912-HolleyH1-4550-3Screw-2.jpg
Since the 4550 was made between the years of 1911 and 1912, it seems obvious that the 1912 version had to be a New and Improved carburetor...in that Holley went from the 2 screw cover to a 3 screw cover much like the later Holley G's. Although I couldn't find any reference to a gasket under the Mixing Cover for...

The first photo also shows a cap running from the bottom of the windshield across the top of the body all the way across the top of the rear door. You can also see the brass screws that hold it on.

Bearing damage

I pulled my driver's side wheel to clean and grease the bearings and found the outer bearing with this chip. Everything was tight, no play in the bearing, or wheel/hub. Do you think this came from an impact while driving, or a different type of stress? Do you think I should look into a shim?
This bearing is about 1 year old, and appears to be in...
Last post
I suspect that’s accidental left to right side crossthreading damage. I’m willing to bet the broken piece ended up being swept up in the garage and never made it as far as the hub.

Scott Conger's Float-Valve

I recently installed one of Scott Conger's enlarged aperture float-valves in my NH carburetor and I'm just delighted at the far more authoritative way my car goes uphill. The difference is quite noticeable.
Last post
There should be no change in fuel mileage because whenever the float bowl is full the mixture will be the same as it is controlled by the mixture needle. Only time it might change is when the float level drops because it is not being replenished by the small valve. At that time the mixture will be lean or the engine will stop. Anyway, the fuel...

I have the correct choke pull rod made to Ford print. How was the pull rod prevented from cominmg out of the choke lever hole?
Has anyone come up with a fix for this?

Small change....it was brought to my attention that 4550 was built between the years of 1911-1912.
This was probably the 1911 version, the 1912 version would then be the 3 screw cover.

Quick question….. recently got my T engine back from a Babbitt shop…. I pulled a brain cramp and neglected to tell the shop to remove the old crank gear…. getting the gear pulled was quite the project….. the crank is in the block so obviously I didn’t wanna get any heat near the front main Babbitt so I just increased the pressure on my impact gun...

John, you teach me Swiss automotive history. I had never heard of a Zedel before. I'm fascinated, there were around a hundred car manufacturers in little Switzerland and I found a register. The Zedel is also in it.
Even if they aren't Model T's, maybe someone will be interested. I just find the pictures interesting. Here...

Dale M, Looking at the photo, the car is parked roughly parallel to the building's wall, and about fifteen to twenty feet out away from the building. A few months ago, as most of us are aware, a knucklehead by the name of whistlindiesel bought a Model T (somehow) and proceeded to make a video on destroying it for views and money on YouTube. There is absolutely nothing left of the poor 26-27 tudor T.

Yeah, well I FINALLY got a title for my 1912 Commercial Roadster that I bought on a bill of sale from a seller I knew very well. DMV ran the engine number 86,076 through the system and it came back as a stolen vehicle. Of course, the stolen vehicle was a 1968 Ford stolen in Newark, NJ (reported stolen in 1971) but that's beside the point. Long...

I'm putting this 15 roadster back together after 50+ years of being a project car. After being apart half it's life it's ready to be together again. I'm told that the previous owner put new rings in and did the valves . It's tight, hard to turn over by hand, feels like it has new rings? Rear end is up on stands, in neutral, and with a 6 volt...

I'm not sure this has been covered but when you park for long periods, like overnight or for a few days or weeks etc. leave the parking brake all the way forward. If you are parked on uneven ground chock the wheels. The front wheels should be chocked in front of the wheels when you crank the car so it won't roll forward when the engine starts....

So who has the data on rod bearings?
What lives longest?
1. X'd bearing - no holes
2. X'd bearing with top hole drilled
3. X'd bearing with bottom hole & chevy scoops
4. Smooth bearing, no x - no holes
5. Smooth, no x, top hole
6. Smooth no x, bottom hole & scoops

John Warren,
Those were the rods I had and posted about earlier in this thread. I sent mine back. I measured 1 SQ. INCH of Babbitt material had been removed for the extra large holes and super wide Xing grooves!!! I did like the bolts and dipper design though.
YMMV

Thanks, John. I did buy the top from them back in the springtime and didn’t mention it at that time. The old top was severely shrunken and getting very hard to use. I’m hoping that the visible curve in the bottom edge in that picture is due to it having shrunk and wasn’t made that way years ago.

Last week I pulled the head off of my T to clean out the carbon deposits and take a look at the head gasket. It definitely needed cleaning! Once I cleaned the pistons I found .030 marks on the tops all 4. As I cleaned the top of the block I found a 3 stamped between the #3 and #4 cylinder valves. Could this be a corresponding mark on the block...

A re-build back in the 60's could be possible of genuine Ford parts, using a little oil was normal as Ford never fitted oil rings, some after market suppliers did make an oil ring for the under wrist pin ring groove on cast pistons but they can wear faster as the bottom of the piston cops the full thrust.
