I have a 1917 Model T touring that I've recently acquired due to a death in the family. It is currently not running. The condition is: a pretty straight complete steel body (a few minor dings), engine looks complete (just lacking radiator hoses, fan belt, carb linkage). Engine may have been rebuilt prior to my receipt, but don't know for sure....

Michigan requires a bill of sale, appraisal, and sometimes a bond if the value of the car is high enough. Rural DMV offices are a lot easier to work with than those in the big cities. A good start would be the cover page for each issue of the Ford Service Bulletins. Just about every issue had the name and address of a Ford dealer that had done something to impress Ford Corporate. Each was a story about the dealer.

Getting ready to change oil for the second time in my 26TT with rebuilt engine. I removed the inspection cover to check the screen and magnet. It was full ( 2 tablespoons) of what looked like grease and felt like grease. The screen cleaned up easy with parts cleaner but the magnet took a lot of rubbing. I had used 10w30 Penzoil. I believe the only thing wrong with Penzoil is the higher price that subsidizes its expensive advertising. A less costly brand is fine if it has the API seal on the container.

If you're replacing the timing gear, you should also replace the generator gear. In your one photo it appears well worn. Running a worn generator gear against a new timing gear will make for a noisy mesh.

We are considering moving onto the country. There would be two ways to access the house. We could take 7 miles of gravel and a 55mph highway. The other way would be a divided highway at 65mph. I’m not sure I feel to comfortable with either option. How much highway driving do you all do? How safe is it? My car is a ‘26 Roadster.

Just assembled my ‘26 RPU and am having trouble with the starting handle contacting the apron. Did the later cars use a longer handle or are they all the same? I’ve got the apron as far back as it can go, right against the leaf spring clamp and just can’t get good engagement on the pin.

In discussions regarding starter switches, there is mentioned of a Ford Type solenoid. Is that a particular solenoid that is preferred when using one in addition to the original floor switch? If so, how do they differ from other solenoids?

Here is some pro and con about changing to 12 volt in old tractors which might apply to any old 6 volt engines.

As far as Model T’s are concerned the original set up 6 volt worked for years and still works until you think you can improve upon it but why. To each his own in that dept.

My car came with an after market ignition switch. In a box of parts I found the original switch still mounted in the backing plate. I suspect it's easily restorable. My question is, how do I determine what key it takes?

The only issue I’ve had with the 5014RE switch is the fact that the holes on the switch did not line up with the holes on my frame but it’s no big deal if you don’t mind a bit of drilling.

On my ‘26 Touring the top bows ,that fit into the irons , have a “tenon” cut on them …
Does anyone have the length ,between tenons on all four bows ..I’m most concerned about the #1 & #4 bows …
The ones on them right now ,,look original ….But are different than the ones in the kit I got with the car …

Hello all,

I finally got my 22 touring barn find running today. It starts ok its firing on all cylinder well but it has a clear knock. The knock is in time with one of the pistons and it gets progressively louder as it heats up. After a few minutes it gets VERY loud and the engine slows to a stop.

this is not good -

My guess is its a bearing...

Does anyone know and can share just how much stiffer the special round wire Watts clutch spring is over the stock Ford flat wound spring?

Judging by the spring rates provided, a new higher tension square spring would work fine
with possibly a little extra tension via the 3 finger adjustment.

Do check the new springs tension. I have found a wide range from 110#'s to 130#'s
The stiffer tension preferred for the Watts disks.

I'm putting together an article for our local club magazine and am after the material for the head and stem & also details on how the two are joined.

I received valve drawings from the Benson Ford Research Center. These are dated 15th January 1927.

The valve stem is cold drawn steel Type EE and the valve head is Cast Iron Grade B.

Only the stem has rolled grooves, 18 per inch for 5/8 . The two items are electric welded together.

Hello,
Broke out the t for the first time and noticed a flow of grease and oil out of the u joint. It was grease followed shortly after by a mix of oil. I believe the grease melted and flowed out. What grease should be used in the u joint?

John, If the oil hole is on the bottom, will it allow a lot more oil to flow through the 4th main going up hills? I understand from a discussion with Gene French that many 4th mains have no hole.

Possibly a little bit more. Not a lot more since oil still enters around the mains open end. Also the spinning spring retainer cup shields the end...

During our club's tech session last night, Joe Bell showed us a rear wheel with an interesting hub on it. As you can see it's got six flats on it that are also pretty well beat to crap. Apparently someone had trouble getting the wheel off the axle. The felloe clamps do indicate it's a Hayes wheel FWIW. Anyone seen one like it? Aftermarket hub...

For some time now one rear wheel was talking to me as we rounded corners. It had already had a farm fix with metal wedges driven between spokes. I had tightened the hub bolts and re-peened the bolts, but looseness in the tenons could not be fixed. The difficulty was finding a sound replacement with the same weathered look. I’ve heard that a Voltage Regulator (cutout look alike) is smarter than the original generator cutouts. How is the generator third brush adjusted when a VR is used…or does it even matter?

Those ring thingy's with the 4 internal tabs (I see 5 units) are bendix drive counterweights.
They have some value to a bendix restorer. Not to be arbitrarily pitched.

My dad straightened many pans without a jig. The jig doesn't straighten the pan, it only tells you when or if it's straight. (I know the jig can also act as an anvil in the straightening process. I'm not saying it isn't a valuable tool.) I wouldn't be surprised if the pan in the photo went from the press to a jig, to check their progress.

To prevent leaks I use clear RTV on my hose connections. It seals the connection and prevents corrosion. When you want to remove the hose simply twist and it comes right off.

Do you put the rtv inside the hose?

on the part the hose goes over.

So I want to make sure I get the layering correct. Got my kit from Classtique ( a very well made kit!!). For a 26 touring. Starting from the vinyl to the springs for the front seat back.

😂 yes, pic was taken when trailer is new Tim. I think decals were added before I hauled a T. I previously had a 7’ wide 14’ enclosed trailer. Was almost impossible to exit a 26-27 T when driven in. Thankfully, 8.5’ width is common to most manufacturers. Don’t think I could negotiate my entry gate with a 20’ trailer.

11 tooth pinion 42 on ring gear. Shaft in pinion is tapered like a T. Looks to be same size as T. Any info would welcome. Thanks Dan

Anyone know the maximum amount of material that can, or has been removed from the late model cyl head?

I am contemplating installing a set of 265 chev pistons into a T block to accomodate the chevy crankshaft I will be installing.
It seems the chevy pistons are a pretty close match for the chevy rods, this will require a bushing for the wrist...

I needed to drain my radiator and now that I refilled it the petcock is dripping. The car has an original radiator and the petcock seems loose. Any tricks to help with this or is it off to the radiator shop?

The easy answer is to fit another petcock. They are the same as those on the pan that are used to check the oil levels. Otherwise, follow Adrain's plan.

Non brass radiator well, not really such a thing or phased out, the radiators are still brass and restyled to be covered with a cowl on the 17 model and on.

When I purchased my 1927 coupe in 1954, eight coils came with it. When I started the coupe restoration, I purchased a coil tester, and all tested OK. I had the Coil Man restore five, and I am keeping the other three for possible future use. I recently coated the five with three applications of boiled linseed oil per his recommendation.

This lid/cap came with some Model T parts I picked up a while back. I’ve had a lot of T accessories over the years but I haven’t been able to figure out what this lid’s application was for. The lid measures 3.4” in diameter.

Here is the 2nd steering column to be identified. (Last one).

Column Length is about 54-56 inches.

Steering wheel is finger-jointed wood.

Spark and Throttle control levers are near the top of the column and have spring loaded lockers to maintain a setting.

The control levers and quadrants might be brass, but I have not done a test.
