Yesterday on a tour we took a break and I was looking at a friend's Speedster. He had a plaque on the back which said 1914 Model T Speedster. My comment was that Henry Ford did not sell a Speedster on the market. The nearest car he sold was the Torpedo.

In the directions it says to align the top of the seat back frame springs to the top wood rail (i'm using the plastic stuff not wood). If I do that from the middle of the spring then both right and left corners of the spring are a lot higher than the wood and it's not touching the anti rattle cardboard. Robert, true, you want the proper gap. Have always done the seat cushion first and test fit some with the loose backrest cover.

In my install the spring may have been a tad high on the corners, the original photo shows what you should try for.

I pulled the rear wheels off my 1925 Roadster today and found these home made axle shims. I just picked up the T in October, and what I could find out I don't think its run since the 60's or earlier. I've done a lot of basic maintenance to it and hope to try and start it in the next few weeks.

I have recently purchased a 1927 Model TT and am doing a bit of research on it. The engine serial number is SC749255. Obviously the C is Canadian but I dont know what the S is for. Also the number is much higher than known list of Canadian engine serial numbers. Does anyone have any further information? Thanks John Ernst

I agree with Bushmike. It is a beautiful T. On my '27 the frame number is accessible by removing the floorboards The number is stamped on the top frame rail just ahead of the right door opening. I am however, assuming that this would be the same for Canadian T's.

Concerning the “black era” model t side lamps (1916-25) were the lamps interchangeable? It seems like the only thing distinguishing between left and right is the font. Can the fonts be used interchangeably?

Hi all,
I took my Bendix apart and noticed the shaft stop nut has holes on either side that almost line up with a section of the end of the shaft. It looks like there should be some kind of pin to hold the stop nut on. Is there a part missing? See photo.

Did Ford Motor Company continue to date the engine block casting until the end of the Model T production, or did they cease dating the blocks earlier?

I understand that Canadian cast engine blocks continued having the casting dates on them until about the end of model T production there. I don't know that for absolute certainty, however that is what has been said in past discussions.
One of the model Ts I used to have had an American two valve cover block with a 1921 casting date on it.

This is the reason I like having an auxiliary transmission on my TT. I can get a true neutral every time with an auxiliary transmission which eliminated the sticky clutch problem. Either way, I’m sure to chock the front wheels every time I start it, just to be sure.

Most of you are aware of sub-standard parts, but this one is important. I'm trying to help a new member with an original 1915. He needs the correct axle housing caps for the car, and they are not available. I think that is disgusting with the number of pre 1919 T's on the road today. I don't want to hear any crap about shimming them up either!

Be careful when checking original unused caps if they are the early version or later version.

Ford did make some of the earlier smaller diameter caps with with the flange on them.

The ID of the caps should be 2.382-2.384 on the earlier smaller caps if NOS and 2.429-2.431 on the later NOS larger caps.

Does anyone have a couple of numbers for a stock cam….looking for the diameter….and the top of the cam apex to the bottom of the cam circumstance…(180 degrees from the apex of the lobe) and any wear limits…..I wanna see if I my original cam is useable!

A new, modern cam with the Ford stock grind would be ideal for a stock T in general service, especially in one of the heavier cars. The more aggressive grinds do well in the lighter cars and in cars driven often at higher speeds.

I have wear in the bore of the camshaft bearing block. I have about 0.01 inch play. What is the best thing I can do to fix the problem?

Lewis Rector did much the same to eliminate bearing shell movement in the block. He made tapered cam set screws for the first and second bearings so they entered the alignment holes and pressed against the bearing shells to hold them tight. I never tried it myself.

The nut in the center of the steering wheel on my 11 keeps coming loose. When I try to tighten puts the steering wheel in a bind and hard to turn. How can I fix this? Art

The cover may not go on any further. It is likely locked down on the gear shaft. The test is to remove the steering shaft & see if it goes down further. I believe you will find it will. The extra material would be properly removed from the gear case side. Not my first rodeo.

I am planning on installing a ruckstell in my 24. Will be getting a kit from one of the parts suppliers. The car currently drives well with no rear end noise or issues at all. Do the 2 wrench hold there adjustment better than the 3 wrench with the lock nut?

My 26 TT keeps throwing the belt off the fan and crank pulleys. The crank pulley is closer to the cases than the eccentric adjuster pulley at the top of the engine causing the belt to ride forward on the pulleys. With the crank pulley pinned in there's no way to adjust it out for alignment and I can't think of a way to pull the top pulley back. I...

I clearly understand what you are saying. Today I will take a spare hub to a shop & make bushings to fit both the inner & outer races. With that the hub stays centered nicely. Also will not hold the felloe in place with bolts as it will center itself when pressing. I think I’m on the right track now.

Alright! The Gasoila fixed the fuel leak problem and the Permatex fixed the up through the ground came a bubbling crude problem! Now when I go to church there isn't a puddle of gasoline under the car when I come out. You can just see a bit of Gasoila excess on the fuel line and the carburetor in the picture. Amazon trailer tires.png I'm in need of a spare tire and rim for my trailer. Will eventually be replacing all four tires since they're old but in good shape. I'm fairly new to trailering, have attached a screenshot of an offering from Amazon. Price seems reasonable. Any opinion on quality and/or price? Other sources I should be looking at?

DuPont sold the Centari brand to Axalta Coating Systems several years ago

I looked at a 25 coupe that a widow has for sale. It has not been started in four years but before that is was driven almost every day for errands. The lady said they have owned it since 2003 and her husband was in the local Model T Club. The car had respoked wheels and a restored interior, covered with blankets. When using the aluminum seals for the rear axles. Do you need to put a steel washer on outside of the bearing before installing the aluminum seal. Would this keep the bearing from cutting the seal.

Below is a transmission hogshead I bought at Tulare this year. It’s a 1911-12 style where the clutch release forks are attached to the high speed clutch shaft using Woodruff keys and clamps. The cover was complete with DB pedals and all the other internals when I bought it, but have since removed them.

Still going thru some plunder from an estate (parts) I purchased and came across this interesting piece. Has a wood base, and on/off switch and two terminals for a battery connection. Has two coiled wire towers and an Eisemann brass tag. Is anyone here familiar with this item? Please educate me on it's use.

The bare necessity for Ford magnets is to hold at least two pounds, the traditional test being a cast iron Ford piston. If you try this charger and find that the magnets will hold three or more pounds, that's great. Use it. If it charges them only enough to hold a couple of pounds, I'd make a better one. Mine gets 4 to 4½ pounds.

My 1914 t with 26 engine is starting to overheat . Is there any newer chemical that anyone would recommend? I flushed it just with water with no improvement. It has a leak proof water pump which I’m removing. Brass works radiator is about 6 yrs old.Thank you in advance!!! Tim Franko

I just got this with a load of Model T Ford parts but it is not Model T Ford

larger threaded area 3/4 with coarse threads the tie rod bolt is smaller than a Model T about 7/16? also has a large taper for the ball stud, can not make out the numbers? any ideas, Bob

Acquired this transmission cover.....well not the usual transmission cover. Is it a spedo drive? Says Nash Transmission Drive but fits on the T.

I am not sure if this can be fixed. The frame is pretty solid and the hinge is working good.
The window slot is eaten out pretty bad all along the bottom and up the sides. I was thinking of trying
to repair with fiberglass but have not tried anything yet. I am not a pro at doing bodywork but will try anything.
Has anyone any thoughts on either...

What I've done for past 35+ years
Clean threads bottoming tap blow out
Dip the bolt in anti seeze prefer the one with copper in it
Install and torque cold to 45lbs
( stock head)
Next get it hot retinue 45lbs
Used to do 50lbs but 45 seems just fine
Side notes copper coat copper gasket
Ford I bet never retouqued head bolts

Does anyone have suggestions for cleaning a Stromberg OF that doesn't require disassembling it all the way? A recently acquired T had some old fuel in it and I want to clean the carb without potentially ruining all the adjustments/tuning (done by Stan Howe years ago).

My brother found this in the attic of his garage in Waltham MA. It's a door to a truck that seems to have wheels on the top that went into a track? Any ideas or are there way too many home built cabs out there?

The size, the latch and the inscription painted on that door makes it likely a rear door to a closed panel bodied truck the size for a Model T.

Inscription covers the loading weight and capactiy of the vehicle and its intended speed for licensing.

I purchased a 32 endless fan belt for my 1927 coupe. I can not get it on. I have installed a new water outlet piece as shown in the attached photo. I have the outlet piece adjusted for the shortest belt position. Comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

I measured with a string before ordering the 32 belt. The reason it doesn't fit may be that the diameter of new fan hub is larger than the original hub. I will check that. The pulley on the crank is the original one.

I have ordered a 33 1/8 belt.

I’m a 2 year owner of a 26T coupe with wire wheels. While waking her up for Spring I checked all of the wheel lugs and found several loose. I’m not sure how tight they should be. Is there a suggested torque # that is safe to use?

Tighten the lug nuts in a criss-cross pattern in 3 or 4 stages. Be sure all parts are clean and in good condition. Drive the car for 10 miles or so, then re-check all the lug nuts and snug them up if needed using the same pattern.

If your wheels and hubs have a lot of paint or powdercoat on them, I'd check the lug nuts for tightness every 200...

You know, I've always thought that if tires originally were as difficult to mount as the standard crop we now use, that horses would have prevailed in the end.

Nice to hear that Blockleys are more pliable and easier to mount than standard black tires (white tires aren't so bad).

What information can you derive from the body number on a 1912 touring? There is no motor with the car, no data tag and I am not sure if there is a frame number. The body number is plainly visible. It is a Fore-Door slab side Model.

It is stamped:

F.B. Co. 41123

Does that mean Fisher Body Company ?

I would hazard a guess that is correct. The body makers couldn't probably care less of keeping THEIR numbers in sync with Ford's serial numbers which as we all know are also the number on the engine block, and were used to date the car. Ford quit using body numbers about mid 1915. In Dec. of 1925 motor numbers did start to appear on frames.
