Hopefully, with any (good) luck, we have the Ford Special racer on the road today. Dean and Bruce are getting it “there” with my limited input.
Below, one feature the Benson Library (THF) drawings show for this racer/motor (labeled “M-III”) was this bit of cosmetic “fluff,” a flange for the “dashtank” opening allowing the #4 cylinder exhaust...

I've discussed this 1917 Coupelet before, and now it is time to begin its restoration. I purchased this car from Larry Smith, and he provided a complete original 1917 chassis with the car. Shouldn't there be rivets in the brass steering quadrant? I am talking about the two long rivets that go through the quadrant and the steering column tube. Assuming they are needed!
Last post
I put a NOS quadrant on my 1925. I didn't wish to change the location of the existing holes in the column tube. It was a difficult job, but I marked the holes from the tube to the quadrant from the inside, and drilled a very small hole from the inside of the quadrant, and kept enlarging it with a file and what other means I could find to get the...

When running on magneto, the position of the timer is not important for the precision of the ignition point as that is set by the position of the coils in the coilring. Anyone have some nice pictures they can post of what the complete pull strap set up should be for the door and quarter windows?

I'm rescuing a '13 touring body that needs some woodwork addressed and all the upholstery and top. The owner has always characterized it as a late '13 because it has the rounded bottom doors like a '14. A supplier has said that he can't proceed with an order until he knows whether to use '13 dimensions or '14's. Unfortunately, he doesn't know what...

Thanks so much, gentlemen.I appreciate your knowledge and attention to my project. I've gotten just what I'd hoped for which was a clear understanding of where this body fits in the continuum. The '12/'13 and earlier latches weren't even on my radar...never messed with something that old. That heel panel is going to be a cut-down donor for the...

So a few years back I had a local guy come here looking for a T front axle. Said he is going to stretch/bend it for lowering. I asked him to do one for me too. He agreed and I sent him off with two axles and some other stuff to even out the deal. be back in a week with your part . He took the payment and the axles and vanished. Fast forward a few...

To clarify what Chad wrote above- this is a problem only when the axle is used with a suicide front end arrangement - when the front spring mount is moved upward to create the drop- this method drops the centerline of the crankshaft to where it intersects a stock height front axle, which causes the hand crank to hit the axle. The purpose of the...

Working on my latest purchase. The demountable wheels have a “detent” where the rim “loop” bolts. Is this a hays wheel? The hays rims seem to have a larger “foot” where at bolt. I have several rims that are a little different that seem to fit. Trying to figure out if these are hays wheels, should use Hays rims, how many different types of 30 x 3.5...
Last post
Mike, I believe the rims wedge on one of the rolled edges only. Felloes to take lugged rims like your Hayes rims have a wider land rolled outwards on the inner edge of the felloe. The rim should wedge on that rolled edge, the four wheel bolts maintaining that wedge effect. It is this rolled land to which Scott refers. If it has been damaged, by...

It does not appear to fit a stock coil box switch in any way, but it does appear to fit the stock keyhole with the notches some how?
It has a patent date of 10 15 18 on it.
Any idea what it is?...Does anyone have a need for it?...I would like to get rid of it....

Not all the fork style buckets appear to have release buttons, at least it looks that way. Also you may try what Scott suggested to do with new reflectors and that is to trim down the outside edges of the ones you have. Also make sure your buckets are round as well

Is the cause of severe front end wobble because of bad shackles, or probably shackles or maybe shackles? Any other reason?
The wobbles oddly is not consistent as to when it happens. But when it has, the speed was only as it was shifted from low to high going up a small hill.
Thank you in advanced!

Round wheels give the best results. Most automobile wheels are not perfect. Neither are most tires. Match mounting wheels and tires can improve performance. In the case of demountable rims, selecting the combination of parts that runs true-est will give the best results.

You're welcome, Dan
as you probably know, keep the plug in while machining it to a dead-perfect fit to your part, and when you do, machine a very small back-rake into it and it will grip just fine when you push the plug out and tighten it onto your part.

This is the first model t I’ve ever been around. I’m learning! Been a tractor mechanic 40 plus years. In rebuilding engine and transmission, I decided to change the ring gear . Old one is questionable and I’m only doing this once. New ring gear fits loose on flywheel. Should it fit tight along with the the brass magnet screws to hold it?
Last post
On drop on ring gears, and there was a bad batch mad several years ago, I have just drilled and taped in 4 spacings, 1/2 in ring gear and fly wheel, and fitted locktite grub screws. that takes any worry away from extra stress on the brass screws.

Last post
Possibily the ammeter is wired in reverse. Especially the 26=27 T's The ammeter looks just like a Model A ammeter and is interchangeable, however, the A has a positive ground so if you use an A ammeter on a T you must reverse the wires. You can tell if you turn on the lights and it reads charge instead of discharge.

Has anyone ever seen a front spring like this? No bolt, just a dimple that one leaf sits into the dimple bottom of the next leaf. I've since changed it out for a new one.
Last post
I had one also like Steve and drilled out the dimple and it has worked just fine. It is tough metal, get a good drill bit, rotate slow and lots of cutting oil. That spring was better than the Ford original. I also bought a new tapered front spring last year for a nother car and the taper is a joke. Drill out the old spring and you will have a good...

One thing few folks know about Ruckstells, is when Eaton took over production from Hall Scott, they changed the design of the patent plate, to the clipped corner design which some people think is the 1926-7 design. Yes, it is, but it is really the Eaton design, and they made small drum models too with the clipped patent plate. I have one of those...

I don't think anybody else has done it, so I'll kick off this month.
On the first day of this year's OCF trip I wasted a couple of hours in a Coffeyville parking lot removing, cobbling back together, and reinstalling my runabout's muffler. By last week it looked like this.

My Bendix bolt and spring broke. The good news is the broken bolt was in the Bendix cover.
While looking at my flywheel, I noticed that I have a magneto ring but there are no windings. Go figure.

It's been quite a while since I visited the gallery, so I just did. It's good to see some new pictures have been added. If you're new to this site you may not be aware of the gallery feature. There's a link to it at the top of this page. If you haven't posted a picture there, find the best photo you have or shoot a new one and add to the...

I have a 24 Touring car we have had for 15 years. It has always had a steering issue so I have decided to figure out what's causing the issue and a possible remedy.
The car drives well, runs straight, no tire wear, but takes a lot of area to turn it around either left or right. It has a 4:1 steering ratio and is easy to drive except when turning...

It’s interesting about the pitman arms. The suppliers sell arm # 3547 which according to them fits 09-27. Are they aware there some year differences? Or is the difference not enough to cause any issues? But for some it can be? Maybe some of the tie rods were changed?

I finally finished restoring my early 1914 touring car at the end of July. My wife told me that I might as well put it away because most of the car shows and parades were done for the year. I thought about it and reminded myself that Henry Ford built these cars to be driven every day so I decided to start driving it to work anytime the weather was...

I like Johns’s assessment of driving his T with the “less reliable” things such as 6 v, Scandinavia bands and etc. And the newer versions too!? I read some of these posts about that and other less reliable parts and you’d think they aren’t any good. It all comes down to how you drive and how you treat the car in my book. And yes the Kevlar bands...

The gas headlamps and gas (acetylene) generator were accessories on the Fords back then. It wasn't too long until Ford started selling all cars fully equipped (very early 1911 the Town Car was listed without headlamps and then soon after with headlamps.)
