Need a Pan Dimension

by
BE_ZERO_BE » Wed May 04, 2022 9:16 pm
First post
I need the dimension from the flange that the block sits on
to bottom of the pan arm that sits on the frame rail.
Is it different for long nose and short nose pans?
Thanks.
Pan Dim.jpg
Last post
You are correct Mark. The difference in the arms matters when they are exchanged. Later model pan arms when fitted snugly to the flat flange on an earlier pan results in the pan sitting lower in the frame, because the distance from the bend in the arm to the ear at the top is longer an the later arms.
If a later arm is used, it needs to be spaced...

The springs on my 27 Roadster have been re-arched and I suspect they are higher than normal now, at least that's the way it looks to me now.
From the floor to the bottom of frame rails I get the following measurements:
Front 22 3/4
Rear 23 55/64
Additionally, the right front running board bracket measures 1/8 lower than the left one. I was...

Your car appears to be within about 1 1/2 of the chassis height on my car. That's well under a 10% difference, which I think is no cause for alarm with new or re-worked springs. I think you'll find that a few hundred miles and full operating weight will reduce the chassis height to within the normal range, if it isn't already within that range....

I spent this afternoon on a creeper with my Ford. I've always enjoyed doing this, wiping off all the mist the gathers everywhere from driving on a tour. It gives me a chance to recall the many days I spent finding all the parts I needed to build this car from scratch, and the trips to Hershey and elsewhere to find it all. Of course the best part...

Two weeks ago, my engine started having a random miss, most noticeable on a hard pull. Compression test showed 50 to 60psi. I poured Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder thinking that after sitting up most of the winter, my valves may be sluggish and not closing on time , due to fuel deposits on the valve stems, even though the gas had been drained...

I put a cup of that Marvel Mystery Oil in my engine.
That made the bands so slick that the brake became totally non-functional.
Fortunately, it was noticed when no one was stopped in front of me.
The Low Band was not very good then, but got me started.

I make replacement bushes using old king pin bushes. They are the correct OD, and the worn ID can be bored to suit the new tie rod end bolt. You can even leave some of the kingpin Bush head to act as a thrust to take the weight of the tie rod.

My left rear fender has a bent iron brace (which also has an additional hole between the two standard ones).

The right rear fender has a stamped steel brace.

Were there different manufacturers or did they change the style at some point? Just wondering.

Yah, the stamped piece has about 1/3 of the material of one solid one. Makes sense.

Some owners say their 26-27 rear fenders are mounted with a bolt threaded into a caged nut on the body. I'm not sure if this is the place they're referring to but my 27 Roadster doesn't look like it ever had any caged nuts at the bolt holes.

The parts book shows a bolt, nut, plain washer and lock washer for this job.

The recent post Genghis Klan and Martin Berry showed a 1927 coupe. I believe the color is probably close to the original color of my 1927. I have found a formula for a maroon that I plan to use. However, I would use the color in the post if I could find a formula or information on such a color. I am not very optimistic that such information can be...

Bruce, you have done exactly what I have done in the past. The little colour chips in the books are way too small for me to get an idea of the overall effect, so I look for a car with the colour I'd like to use. Your fuel tank does the same thing. On my last two restorations I was able to access areas of the original colour in behind the rear...

Hello All,
Yesterday I visited Dean Yoder and was telling him about something I thought had seen on this Forum this winter about a thin hard plastic or phenolic plate that someone is producing to place under the coil points apparatus to eliminate the need for spacer washers or shims. Basically creates a flat surface to place the points on. Anybody...

Hello. I would like to replace the original plate glass windshields with safety glass on my 1915 touring. I see where I can buy the set from Eklers (Mac's) for under $200 + shipping or should I just go to my local glass shop? I'm pretty handy and I have put curved windshields in before. I know the newer glass is thinner than the plate. Thoughts?...

Hello. Well, I got my new safety laminated glass windshield replaced in my 1915 touring. I removed the top frame and left the bottom frame on the car. I was amazed how easy the old plate glass came out. I was also amazed on how the old windshield was cut to fit. The corners and angled cut were kinda nibbled off. My local glass shop cut and...

Rajo dual plug ignition history question

I have a dual plug Rajo head that will come back from the shop at some point. One of the things to work on is ignition for it. I have a Bosch front plate distributor. I see on the form that folks have adapted dual spark rotors and caps to run both sets of plugs in Rajos, which sounds like a good way to go. But, I have a rule that I won’t put...

Vintage dual spark stuff will set you back some serious cash. Here are a couple. One is Stutz and one Pierce Arrow I think.

I got a spare hub with my 1916 Town car.
Tomorrow i have to go to a pre 1918 vehicle event far from home. As my rear hub make some crunchy noises i thought it good to carry a spare hub.
So i checked with a spare rim to put it together in my car. To my surprise the location of the valve for the tube on the hub and on the rim do not correspond with...

What do you think this tank was originally?
Looks like someone has added a threaded hole a long time ago?

I know that basic design was used for two to three years, with at least three variations in the outside the frame rail sediment bowl. I believe it was 1912(?), I could wrong by a year(?), when the sediment bowl was moved to the center of the gasoline tank (directly over the drive shaft!) for a short while, then offset to clear the driveshaft.

Hello...As I drive my 1914 Touring car more places I occasionally have to leave it unattended and because I can not lock the ignition, I am worried someone might get hurt playing with the car. The ignition has a key slot, but I don't have a key for it. See attached picture.

Does anyone know where I could get a key? Or should I just try to find a...

The key that Bryan needs looks just like the key shown in the Yale tool box lock that was just posted.

While at the Tulare swap meet last week I saw a mid year '13 frame. Young Russ Furstnow owns it now. I've heard about those frames, but never have seen one. It's good to see Russ carrying on his fathers legacy! The rear ears on them are flat, as opposed to the common raised examples we are all familiar with.

This one uses regular castellated nuts and the bolts are drilled but no cotter keys. Both sides the bolts are put in from the left, nuts on the right.

The Ford 3-Ton M1918 was one of the first tank designs by the U.S. and only a few were built by the Ford Motor Company.
It was a small two-man, two Model T engine, one-gun tank.
One engine ran each tank tread ad if one engine died, the treads could be coupled together and allow the tank to creep away in Low gear for a short distance.
It was...

As I have posted before several years ago regarding M1918 tanks, there was one of those in the City of Downey back in the mid seventies on display outside The Supply Sargeant Military Surplus Store on Firestone Boulevard near Brookshire Avenue across from Simpson Buick.
It had taken a hit in the right rear exposing the engines and mechanical...

My daily driver is in the panel shop, so Henrietta had to work today. It was seed grading day for the next planting season, and if I wanted some screenings for chook feed, I had to be there. The grader delivered the screenings directly to bins on the tray. Going home on the umsealed road was much more pleasant with a bit of a load on....

I tried to buy some new sets from both Lang’s and Snyder’s. Sadly they are out of stock. This is very unfortunate. I guess with the passing of RV Anderson, these are not available anymore. I hope some one will have the interest to want to do what RV was doing going at some point 😞

How much torque?

How much torque for a wrist pin bolt, and how much for rod castle nuts?
Thanks!
Last post
I also use a piston vice & a rod through the pin. Rod bolt nuts I also hand tighten by feel - I assume if one's intent on utilizing a torque wrench, I believe a grade 5 bolt is 6-8 lbs. per 1/8 - Model T rod bolts are 3/8 so close to 24 foot lbs.
