Axle Gears

First post
A couple of friends are tearing their car's rear ends apart and will be replacing the axles. What kind of rig is required for pressing the existing axle gears off and installing the new ones? Is it something we might put together from reasonably priced components or a job best left to the experts? axle_gear.jpg
Last post
My observations regarding all this talk about axle/gear clearance & varying fits. I have worked a lot of these axles/gears. Parting out rear ends & salvaging unloved iron one step away from scrap. I only save the good parts. Must have 40 excellent gears taken from bad axles & 20 excellent axles removed from bad gears. In working with original Ford...

Hello Everyone,
I bought this car last year. It has always run rough since I bought it. In an effort to try to get it running smoothly, I decided to start my diagnostics with some compression testing. This car has an aftermarket high compression head which I’m guessing probably increased the ratio to 6:1. These tests were performed rather crudely...

I've had good results hooking an air line to each cylinder in turn with that cylinder on TDC of the power stroke. Even a slight valve leak can be heard at the carburetor or tailpipe. Have the car in gear and the brakes set when doing this to keep the engine from turning.

I'm in the process of an engine swap and both cars have a block of wood under the trans mounts inside the chassis rail.
What a pain as the vertical bolt cant be removed with the wood in place. I manage to chisel then smash the wood away in the first car after an hour or 2 but was impossible to do in the 2nd after a frustrating period however I...
Last post
I believe that is correct. The side bolts only need to be tight enough not to rattle. The 1/2 hole in the blocks is larger than the OD of the bolts to allow slight movement. The blocks also have clearance between the top of the block and the upper frame flange. //I had some concern about how tight I had to get the side bolts to allow placing the...

Holly G Carburetor Mixture Setting

First post
Does anyone know what setting I should use for the initial mixture control setting on this Holly G carburetor? The rod that controls it was binding and in the process of fixing that, I stupidly forgot to note the exact setting before I started messing with it.
Last post
Generally the setting for initial would be 7/8 to 1 turn out from close.
Lots depends on the condition of the carb, try this initial, if trouble running, then turn out (more rich) by 1/4 turns of the knob
Don't forget to choke some on a cold start.

The article below includes a spot on Mark Twain, as well the new Ford Model B. I'm often intrigued by the place our Fords played in the history of the early 20th century, as this country and the world changed, in large part due to the changes brought by motor cars in general and Fords in particular.
Besides describing the new Ford, another...

Sometime back I took apart a 1917-1919 front half of a touring. The approx. 1 inch square tack rail had a piece of angle iron that ran across the back, mounted to the tack rail to help keep the back straight. Could be that piece is missing and over time has allowed the seat to bow.

Coolant will leak where water will not, and I suspect that some or a lot of the success of reusing head gaskets in the early days was due to the fact that water was pretty much all you had and small leaks would typically just rust shut.

I finally decided to bite the bullet and pick up a 2 cylinder pump without visible dings and restore it completely.
Has been more frustrating than a T to get into, but finally there. Someone rebuilt this one back when I was a baby I think and did a lot of shade tree fixes so thought to just copy would be fruitless.
A few questions...

I know Winfield carbs were made in different sizes. What are the largest and smallest Winfield carbs? What is the largest size that can be used om a T motor, while still retaining drivability for street use, if the motor has a .280 or .290 lift cam and a Model A exhaust manifold? Is a Winfield even recommended for street driving?

More wonderful photos! Thank you.
Of particular interest is picture number two (Garber Okla.) An interesting gathering street scene. What is special about it is not one, but two very light colored automobiles! The smaller car in the street is likely a Buick White Streak series. I have no real idea what the larger parked car is.
Proper colors for...

On my '26 how do I adjust the idle speed at the carburetor. I know how to adjust the fuel mixture, but I think that it is idling too fast. Also.....does a fast engine idle effect the smoothness of up-shifting? Is there a way to check the RPM?

I had considered that it might be an early variant, but honestly, since this is the first I've really looked into it carefully, I wasn't sure exactly what I had. What you mention makes perfect sense. I had never had occasion to pay enough attention in 15 years to even notice it before. If I hadn't gone out to measure the location...

I recently was asked to help a friend with his Cartouche upholstery. I have never seen such a lack of research and responsibility as I witnessed with this kit. I usually dislike anything that is a reproduction, but this one takes the cake. I wonder why Langs and Snyders even carry that brand? Shame on them.

It's Homecoming week! Who is excited for tours through the Hoosier countryside?
Thursday the tour will be approximately 30 miles and is a leisurely drive through the backroads to Cambridge City for a fun day of antiquing, eating, and hanging out with your Model T friends.

Having a 1/2” plate machined at a local shop next week, and they’ll be building my “lake style” exhaust.
The measurements I acquired off the forum, that I corrected with information from original post:

I also saw a post with the plate that was produced by Chaffin years ago:...

Okay to just sum up, block side is flat, use rings in block and the 3 in one manifold gaskets. Away from block can machine in a bit to set exhaust tubing into the plate if desired or just but it up and weld. 2 intake ports just leave flat on both sides? Getting with shop tomorrow. If anyone else wants one I’ll see what price is and I’ll see if...

I have installed the repaired and repainted front fenders, new hood shelf wood and trying to fit the repo radiator apron but no cigar yet. The original apron was welded to the radiator shell and...

Obviously the best way is to have the body work done first, then refit everything, then remove everything, have it all painted and then reassemble. Oh well, the first scratches and are already done so...

It is interesting that a person is looking for the perfect Model T, one the meets his unusual close standard. Nothing else will do for him. He wants the result of someone else's hard work and much time. He does not want to do any of this hard work or will not take the time to do so. That is his privilege, of course, but it sets him apart from most...

Why are all model T's lumped together?
After all these years why are the Model T's not grouped into Series?
Series 1: 1908-1909
Series 2: 1910-1917
Series 3: 1918-1924
Series 3a: electric
Series 3b: non-electric
Series4: 1924-1927.

It is me. Growing up around British Cars the concept of a manufacture designated series is the correct way to tell the difference in the Model T from 1908 to 1927. During those yeas of productions changes were made visually and mechanically to the car known as a Model T. And certainly parts from a 1927 will not fit a 1908/09 vehicle. I am sticking...

Anyone have experience using ARP 12 point connecting rods bolts & nuts? Building a stroker engine where camshaft clearance may be a problem. If you've used them and are satisfied with the experience, part numbers would be helpful, bolts or nuts. Any threaded locking compound used on these? Thanks

thanks Craig, I've also used the small block Chevy bolts in the past, just spitballing to see what other options that may be out there.

Here is a unique quail that I found. It appears to be a Ford coil but does not have the two brass connections on the side. Instead it has a screw on the bottom and some sort of spring connection on the side.
