My name is Josh Hollingsworth, I am a 16 (almost 17) year old currently in the process of restoring my 1919 Touring pickup. When I first got my hands on the unrestored car, I was so concerned with the state of the car that I couldn't even imagine myself driving it at the time. Now that I've finished the engine and the frame, I have quickly...

A Model T in GOOD CONDITION can be driven safely at 35 to 45 MPH on the open road...
Quite right. But the faster the speed of the T, the faster the wear and tear. I like to keep my normal cruising speed under 40 mph. Some prefer under 35 mph. I once got my 1915 up to 50 mph briefly just to see if I could, but I don't drive it that way.

Hogs Head Question, Applicability

First post
I have a Sept 1916 Engine and and plan on using the improved large drum transmission.
Is a 26/27 Hogs Head required or does it matter. If yes, then what about the upper two mount bolts that go into the block. The 1916 block is not drilled for that.
Thanks MTFCA
Last post
I know of a car that had the crankshaft break at the flange. It had a 1925 block with 4 dip pan and 26 hogshead. Having seen how much flex there is in the pan without the two bolts up top, I can't say I was surprised.
Great Point John!!!

After finding a good working horn and putting things back together I noticed I don't have the bolt/nut that holds the horn switch and secures the bracket to the steering column.
If any one could snap and post a picture of that long bolt/nut that would help in locating it through all my small boxes of parts ect. Thanks in advance.

I just found another NOS horn switch screw, not bolt! I sent it to Keith, and hopefully will be able to share it. My concern is the threads. In Keith's original photo, the threads look like NC.

That carb has no provision for an in-cab choke. If your car has an electric starter, that would be inconvenient. Later G's had an additional arm on the choke lever for that. You could swap out the choke for a later one if need be. If you always use the Armstrong starter when the engine's cold, then it's no problem.

The wood strip that runs the width of the seat in my car is not as tall as it should be but it seemed to separate two storage areas under the seat. I’ve been working on airplanes for nearly 40 years, and Teflon tape of any kind is taboo in fuel and oil applications. I used Permatex #2 on the pipe fitting of my “24 touring’s new brass sediment bowl because that’s what I had on hand. After I get the new steel fuel line and reworked cylinder head installed I’ll gas it up and see how it holds.

Usually period part numbers from the Canada and USA parts books do correspond with each other but when it comes to the tops, not so, you may be modifying things to fit.
Also what is evident in the parts books is that Canada started in 1920 with the 1 man top for touring and the USA was 1922.

Definitely not needed. The flywheel alone will sling plenty of oil. I have been running without slingers for 20 years or more.
With a splash system however, it's a good idea to have an accessory oil line that moves oil to the front of the engine, especially when climbing steep hills.
A story about accessory oil lines: I was helping a friend...

Another area for cracks is the rear main bearing web, especially in early blocks, but not exclusively. The blocks are machined to accept the nuts on the rear main bearing bolts. This creates sharp stress riser, from which cracks can emanate. The end result is usually a broken block and crankshaft. It is often reported that the crankshaft broke and...

Here are photos of the starter switch for my 1927 coupe. What should I do to it, if anything? Is there a way to test it before installing it in the car?
I assume the non-metallic washers next to the base are important and probably should be replaced.
What happens if a switch shorts out?

Yours looks pretty good. I would align the contacts, and clean them up real good. I had a problem with one of those I wanted to use on my 4925. It was perfect, and I put the switch on with the extension, and it wouldn't go through the seat riser plate far enough.
So, I had to use a NORS replacement I had of the later design.

FABRICATING A SPARE TIRE CARRIER FOR TOURING

Attached is a condensed photo summary of how I fabricated a rear tire carrier for my '21 T that has 30-inch split rims. It began with a salvage bracket I purchased as one assembly from Mark at Model T Haven, before he closed shop. These assemblies are also available on eBay. To cut down on weight, the frame might also be fabricated with aluminum....

Thanks for compliment Allan! I think you're right that they are Chevy rims. Car and most of its parts over the last three years have come from Mark Freimiller's 'Model T Haven' which he closed and auctioned everything last November ( see link below ). Really going to miss his wisdom and used parts inventory! With regard to the project, goal was...

We have a new to us 1916 Touring and under the rear seat is a compartment. Should there be a metal cover on this area?
Thanks,

Campbell,
Generally, yes.
There were covers for both the front and back seat hatches in 1916. Depending on the manufacturer, the seat frame and covers would be made of either wood or steel. You likely will find remains of hinges or holes for mounting the hinges.

So we took a family vacation that had us driving over 4800 miles through 7 states. We were at the Indy 500 speedway on our way to Memphis to see Elvis' house when my wife said why don't we backtrack to the Model T museum. So off we went. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Russ Furstnow posted a wonderful article on tools. I agree with most of it, but disagree with the oil can photos. I emailed Russ, and he encouraged me to post the photos of the early oil cans in my collection. The Maple City oil can is the actual oil can pictured in the parts books. It has the Ford logo in two places just under the neck. The next...

Mark, though not an oil can, I’ve repaired a leaking bottom seam on a 1940’s Dietz kerosene lantern with spar varnish - poured a little in the lantern base, swished it around to cover the seam, let it dry for a few days. Five plus years later - still no leaks.

That plate is part of the economizer system. For FORD, it would have one hole, and it's alignment relative to the throttle plate is critical for proper performance.
U&J updrafts evolved somewhat through the years in ways which are not always obvious. Due to their being modular in design it is quite possible that many marriages took place in the...

Today I had a wonderful first drive of 50 km with my Lizzy (1915 Touring). Everything fine, no issues, this was/is good for my trust in this car (actually this was my 3rd drive in total).
My Lizzy needs almost exactly 10l/100km gas (approx. 4.25 gpm), this appears to be a good value.
What I figured out is:

Rainer,
Measuring the distance for the timer setting only works if you have a Ford timer and a Ford roller, you might, but probably do not. Ford timers and rollers are marked with a Ford script. There are a lot of different manufactures and styles of timers, not knowing for sure what you have, it is best to assume that you do not have a Ford timer...

I still think you can take the majority of that deep dent out so it is not so prominent. I would place it front side down on a smooth piece of wood and from behind, using a broad, rounded piece of wood, gently rub the dent out by applying pressure to the high point of the dent. As the dent is smoothed out, the high point will spread out. Continue...
