I've got questions about styles of U&Js. That plate is part of the economizer system. For FORD, it would have one hole, and it's alignment relative to the throttle plate is critical for proper performance.
U&J updrafts evolved somewhat through the years in ways which are not always obvious. Due to their being modular in design it is quite possible that many marriages took place in the...

My Lizzy needs almost exactly 10l/100km gas (approx. 4.25 gpm), this appears to be a good value.
What I figured out is:

Measuring the distance for the timer setting only works if you have a Ford timer and a Ford roller, you might, but probably do not. Ford timers and rollers are marked with a Ford script. I still think you can take the majority of that deep dent out so it is not so prominent. I would place it front side down on a smooth piece of wood and from behind, using a broad, rounded piece of wood, gently rub the dent out by applying pressure to the high point of the dent. As the dent is smoothed out, the high point will spread out. Continue...

We don't need to get into a big whooptedoo about whether to use engine pans. I aim to do it. But in researching the mounting hardware I find some disagreement about what's the right hardware. I'm sure about the bolts: ¼-20 carriage bolts with about an inch of thread. But what about the nuts? Hex or square? What kind of washers, if any?
Last post
Here again, how are we supposed to supply and answer, when the year of the car is not given? Those items were changed over the years considerably. We all should agree that the engine side of the engine pans use the engine bolts. In many cases the engine pans have gotten the holes enlarged due to being replaced several times, and require a flat...

A simple flat shim was developed and mounted between the carrier...

It doesn't take much to allow the high tension to find a way to ground. Old insulation can harbor internal defects that allow current leakage even if it looks good. Such defects...

Some chassis have the ID (VIN) number stamped on top of the channel iron on the passenger side (or driver’s side)...
Not on this one. Serial numbers were first stamped on frames December 10, 1925 (1926 model year). The Ford parts book shows this front spring clip up to 1921, no later.

When I took apart the drive shaft to inspect it I found it has a Babbitt bearing in it at the ujoint. The Babbitt looks good and has no cracks, it is also tight in the tube, the ID is with in .010 of the shaft OD, the shaft has very little wear at the bearing surface and the thrust is with in .008. My question is do I need to replace it with a new...

The end float in the driveshaft is controlled by the bushing face on the bush at the bell. There are no shims anywhere in a standard fitting.
Rather than take a cut off the transmission to clean it up, I would use some fine abrasive paper to polish it. This will clean it up and leave a nice surface for a new babbit bearing. Gene French can supply...

Correct John, and here is comparisons to the earlier heat stove pipes.
The late pipe is recessed at the upper side to clear the new combo choke and carb adj. rod with the universal joint.

I need any detail for a Model T door window lift actuator . I am trying find a work-around for a 1925 Essex that has a worm drive window lift actuator in a die cast or pot metal housing that has crumbled. I was told that a Model T ( do not know what year ) may have a similar lift actuator that might be adapted to the Essex. Any help or suggestions...

Abbott and Costello art clear.png
ABBOTT: Driving a Model T Ford is simple, Lou. You just have to remember the names of the controls. You can drive a manual transmission, right?
COSTELLO: No problem, Abbott—I learned how to drive on a stick. So okay, where's the stick?
ABBOTT: Well, there IS no stick. You put your left foot to the floor...

Need Advice - Barn Find Winfield Model M

I have a pot-metal Winfield Model M, in Barn-Find condition - which means the barrel is stuck and all the steel parts are rusty. The castings themselves are apparently in good shape but they happen to be made out of Unobtanium and Easibreakium. Has anyone out there successfully rebuilt a Winfield in this condition? What can I do to get it apart...

Thanks to all who replied. I'll go ahead and let it soak in an Acetone / ATF cocktail for maybe a couple of weeks. I've got plenty of other projects in the meantime.

I see that there are bushings sold for a steel wheel where the stem passes through. Does anyone use these? Are.they required?
Last post
You failed to mention if your tube has a rubber stem, or a metal one. They are called rim nuts. Since you have wire wheels, you can use the Model A tubes providing your wheels are Ford wheels. A&L parts specialties has those parts. I don't know if they sell the tubes with the proper valve stems, or if you have to put them in yourself.

John, you may be right about the stitching. But that is a beaded edge clincher tyre. They do not have wire in the beads because the tyre has to be stretched over the rim to fit it. The first T cars to have straight sided tyres, with wire in the beads, was the 21 wheeled 26-7 cars with split rims or wire wheels. The TT's had straight sided tyres on...

Removing stuck inner front wheel bearing

I am having some problems removing this bearing. I may have messed it up already trying to use my gear puller behind the seal and possibly bent the cage.
Any ideas? I know it is NOT supposed to slip on the spindle but this one is really tight.
Last post
Myles, if you use a drift to drive the bearing out, the seal will come with it. There is no need to remove the seal first.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone used the english tubes in wire wheels with metal fellows. I wonder how there 3 stem works out with a thinner metal rim such as my Budd wire wheels.
How long does it take to get them once ordered? Is anyone stocking and selling them in the US?

Good point David. In my experience only Hayes made wire wheels with metal felloes. They are the only ones I know of which have the tyre fitted on a separate rim that de-mounts in the same way as they do on wooden spoked wheels. Perhaps there is some confusion between rim and felloe.

These are chrome plated over brass bodies. When the chrome is stripped off and the brass is polished, the flower petal design one looks right at home on a brass car.

Dodge Brothers Spindles for Model T Ford Racing Cars

I have a 1913 chassis and drivetrain that was converted into a racing car in the late teens and plan on actually racing it with the Pre-War Group of the VSCCA here in New England. For safety reasons I want to replace the Ford spindles with something stronger. I'm aware of the racing spindles that were available back in the period. I also remember...
Last post
Dodge later went to a grease fittings on the spindle body. Not drilling the spindle bolt should add extra strength to it.

This is the same radiator as in my March 17 post. It is a round tube radiator. I thought it would be good to start a new post.
These photos show it after filling it with water. I found two leaks. One at the cast iron outlet, and one in the core. Sorry, the last photo would not go in vertically. A follow up post will show these same locations...
Last post
Neither one of those leaks looks so bad that you couldn't use it as-is, just to see how well it will cool. I'd do that first, then fix the leaks. Waddya' got to lose?

I can't get the passenger side door to close with new welting and door panel. It appears the door is too close to the subrail by the lower hinge and bottom of the door panel is causing it not to latch. The hinges look perfectly straight and not bent and the door is rock solid to the cowl. Taking out the striker helps.

Most everyone agrees that Henry Ford thought his son Edsel was weak and spent much of his energy trying to toughen him up, to no avail. I think Edsel was a gentle soul that would have loved nothing better than to spend his time with the engineers designing better cars rather than in management trying to fill the shoes of Henry. Car design is where...
Last post
I agree with the OP. Unfortunately Henry was not the type to relinquish authority. Edsel was a genius, but I doubt that he could possibly worked well in any capacity with his father as his boss. Ford would have been well ahead of where it was in 1927 if Edsel had his way. Ford didn't really catch up with GM and Chrysler until about 1939.

The leak at the outlet joint may be due to vibration or forces from removing an old, stuck hose. The leak in the core proper is likely to be from a micro-crack or a pinhole in the tube from internal corrosion. Be aware that any water spilled onto a radiator core may remain between the fins for quite a long time. Be certain that there is an actual...

I am relining the service brake on my 1906 Orient Buckboard runabout. All you forumeers grumbling about marginal Model T brakes take note: the Orient system utilizes one external band, a full inch in width, contracting around a massive 5 diameter drum on the left rear wheel.
I have a couple varieties of Model T woven lining on the shelf and...

...Glue wasnt necessary. Bonding the linings is a modern thing.
Modern, yes, but also necessary for this application — there was a lot of spring-back from the lining and there is no way the rivets could have held it snug to the band. The brake drum is only 5 diameter and the lining was not happy with that much curvature.

I had taken off a Holley straight-through car, which gave terrible mileage and had a disappointing stumble when starting off that defied remedy. The Holley gave terrible mileage on the commute, always less than 10 mpg.
But I had this dandy...
