Interesting tool

I just brought home a 25 Touring last night and the previous owner sent it with everything that was already under the back seat. Among the goodies were a wheel tool, spark plug wrench, band nut wrench, a petcock tool and this interesting piece. It has 11 file marks up the length, so I’m assuming it is gas tank related. Am I also guessing the curly q at the end is to turn the shutoff lever and the narrow point to clear sediment from the bottom petcock?

If I can remember to take a picture of it I will send one of the one I have. Similar with the fuel marks but lacking the point to clear the petcocks.

Mine has a wooden handle with the ever-fading name and 3 digit phone number of a gas station that I assume gave them away. The metal shaft is notched to mark gallons in the fuel tank. On the end is a deep notch/groove that fits over the petcocks to allow you to check the oil without having to crawl under the car.

I suppose these were pretty common but its always cool to have one of the old ones. Having one adds a lot to the car...shows more of the history.

Thats pretty cool. Even clears the hole. I have an old one but I made one that checks fuel and oil. Just an old push broon handle but after another thread I modified it to turn the petcock. I filled the tank one gallon at a time and marked it with permanent marker. Its only accurate on my 26 pickup.

It's hard to believe that Henry Ford wasn't inspired to incorporate an engine oil dipstick for the Model T, only level plugs. But knowing his character, he probably thought it was good for every car owner to crawl under the car to check things out under there.

What about those clear plastic sight gauges that screw into plug holes? Has anyone tried that?

Me Landers, could you send me a pic of your dip stick next to a ruler please? I have a 26 touring the measurements might work for.

There is a drawing of the '26-'27 gas tank fuel level at the bottom of this thread. That should help you make a gauge.
