Transmission bands

I have a 1927 roadster pickup. I am installing wood bands. The bands shown for a 1927 has one wide band. All 3 bands in mine are narrow. Can I cut the wide wood band down to size. It will still have the oil groves. My motor number is 4042906. Is mine not a 27 roadster? Has engine been changed out? Did some 27s have all narrow bands and some one wide. The band so have the removable ears. (FYI) I let one on the band slide around too far so I had to remove the hogs head.

That engine number would be may 26, 1920

I recommend getting the correct brake band and not cutting it down.
If you cut it, the rivets and ears won't be centered anymore, unless you cut both sides.

The wood band is all that would need to be trimed. The wide wood band had 4 oil groves, if I trim at the 2 outside oil groves the inside 2 oil groves matches perfectly with the other 2 wood bands. All 3 steel bands are the narrow ones. When did Ford change to have one wide band?

The "Improved" 1926 (& '27) Ford had the new, wider brake band.

The VIN on the title is 14654880. Would this be a 1927 body with a 1920 engine?

Philip,
You ordered wood bands based on the year model of your RPU and not engine/tranny. Yes your engine has been changed out and no; Ford didn’t make ‘27 models with some 3 narrow bands and some 2 narrow and one wide. Toward the end of Model year 1925 Ford introduced a wider service brake DRUM necessitating a wider brake band and slightly modified tranny cover. Some call it a hogshead but here in south Texas tamales are made from hogsheads. Simply get a 3rd narrow band - they’re proliferating in our garages - and call the wood band maker and buy a single narrow band....

Got the wood bands installed. Took it for a short drive and they work great. I found it easier for me to remove first then remove and reinstall the starter. The best advice that I got was the dental floss to tie on the washers and nuts. I have a tendency to drop small parts. With the floss I was not worried about droping the washer. Did not drop anything. ( But wrenches, bolts, and lights when under the T)
