Missing valve clip

Post by WillsT » Tue Jan 30, 2024 1:10 am

I was working on getting my T back up and running after replacing starter motor which failed due to bad solenoid.
All that worked just fine and got the engine to start and run as normal
Coming back a day later could not start the engine due the choke being locked open
After removing carb found out the choke butterfly valve was loose and displaced due to valve missing the clip
So now the question is where did that clip go, not in the carb, not in the intake manifold and can’t find anything using my finger in the intake opening in the head. Maybe got sucked into a cylinder and spit out or still in chamber?

Any suggestions as to how to proceed from here would be much appreciated.

It could have also have just fallen out of the intake opening onto the ground.

Lost steel and iron objects that have fallen onto the ground can often be relocated by use of a strong magnet. There are wide magnets used by construction folks to recover lost nails before they find their way into a tire.

Those clips are soft brass - nonferrous. Are you positive there was one in place ? If so, it must not have been bent over & it most likely got sucked into the combustion chamber via the intake valve. If the engine didn't start, it could be in the muffler.

I think I'd really not worry about it.

EDIT: Sorry. Meant to say NOT worry about it.

I am not looking for clip for reuse, I already ordered new ones from Langs
I am still amazed how we can just order replacement parts for 100 year old cars, we are so lucky
My concern is that the old clip, or parts thereof are finding their way somewhere they can do damage such as valves

Nothing found on ground, thanks for hints.

Disassemble the carb. Probably fell in next to the spray nozzle. It is the lowest point in the assembly. If it’s in there, it could cause running problems.

If the clip fell out then there would be 3 pieces to look for. The two small bent over tabs & the main portion. What was the cause of the choke locking up? Is it possible that one of these pieces got caught & caused the choke butterfly to lock up?
Did you have a heat pipe (stove pipe) on the carb? Another possibility that in removing it or in taking t he carb off some pieces fell to the ground
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

The valve was no longer centered due to lack of clip and in turn it would no longer rotate in the valve body
Did have a stove pipe, since it is upstream not sure it affects anything
I will take the carb apart, nothing to loose with doing that
Thanks
